While staying at the Double Tree we decided to trying dinning at the Umami Restaurant. They have optional Dome dining on the back patio It's a beautiful setting in a well manicured garden area. Israt our waitress seated and provided excellent care during our entire visit. The menu is decidedly Asian in nature leaning towards Japanese style. They have a full bar offering so everyone will find choices for their individual tastes. I ordered the sirloin steak with Japanese dipping g sauce (sweet soy in nature). I ordered a side of egg fried rice. My wife ordered the chicken fried rice as her main. We started with an order of gyoza for an app. My steak and rice were perfectly cooked and very flavorful. My wife raved about her dish. A really great experience that I highly recommend. read more

Servers were very kind and hospitable. It took time for the food to come out but it was delicious. We ordered Korean fire cracker chicken wings, signature chicken fried rice, singapore fried noodles with chicken, and the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake all of which were delicious. Beautiful​ classy restaurant in Kensington inside Crowne Plaza right across the street from Gloucester station. Thankfully I was able to make a reservation through OpenTable​ for a party 5 so when we walked in we got seated right away, but not too long till we realized their AC wasn't working for a hot summer in London.. wish the manager​ I spoke to an hour before our reservation mentioned it or had a sign up outside the door about this technical issue, we would've come back another day but since it was already late for dinner and we were tired, kinda just decided to go with it. Confusing Asian​ fusion style menu. Food arrived about 35-40 mins later. The server​ wasn't very attentive with water/drink refills and didn't have any alternative to the ac issue either. What we had: -Pad Thai Jae (Thai)- Rice noodles, wok fried with broccoli and tofu. OK. -Nasi Goreng (Malaysian)- Wok fried rice in mild spices, served with a skewer of chicken satay and prawn cakes. Terrible. -Gang​ Kiew Wan Gai (Thai)- Green curry with chicken, aubergine and baby corn. Pretty good. -Indonesian Curry- Kinda tastes like Panang​ curry, OK. -Coconut king prawns. OK Overall, for date nights this place is beautiful. But wasn't​ too happy with their food quality, portion size, ​and pricing. I'll give an extra star to the manager, she was kind enough to take off the dishes that didn't come out as expected and swapped with something else we liked, just overall food wasn't all so great.. read more

Really lovely service, and nice clean environment (in the Crowne Plaza), but the food is not very authentic Asian. We had the laksa, meegoreng, hainanese chicken, and the coconut cake with mango salsa. Both noodles skewed on the very salty side, the chicken was VERY ROUGH and was a big disappointment - not at all what hainanese chicken should be like! And the coconut cake was really more of a pastry cookie, so it wasn't what we expected. read more

I see a lot of reviews saying this is not authentic Asian food. Who cares? It's fusion, which is by nature not pure anything. My daughter thought her duck with tamarind sauce was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed my vegetarian curry. I ordered a side of bok choy which was flavourful and refreshing. My daughter loved her dessert---pandan crème brûlée. It was a delightful meal and the service was great. It was a little pricey but well worth it. I highly recommend it to weary travellers wanting a delicious and nourishing meal. read more

I'm in London on business and my hotel's offerings are quite narrow and rather ethnocentric. So after two days I was hungering for something exotic to go with my profile picture, you know? So I was walking on Cromwell Road in South Kensington, you know, near that palace? And I saw this pan-Asian place. I never trust anything that says "pan-Asian" because it usually means "master of none". But it was either that or BK. So... When I walked in, I realized it was part of Crowne Plaza. Dagnabbit! (So... BK?) Promptly, I followed the lone South Asian host-waiter-table cleaner. First disappointment, no raspberry iced tea or any sweetened iced tea. (Ugh, to be an American needing to eat across the pond! But Nestle is European, no?) Fine, apple juice! For lunch, I had the lamb curry, small serving, with steamed white rice, and side of sauteed baby bokchoy. The lamb is slow-cooked and quite soft, and the serving size was perfect for me. The spiciness was on-target but I found it a trifle too salty. I wasn't thinking of having the simple bokchoy side dish but the waiter suggested it, since the lamb was all meat, thick and... I got it. I ordered it. And he was right. The garlicky veggies complemented the curry quite well. And I've been missing my veggies. The plate looked nice but it made too much clanging when the utensils made contact with it. Was it metal? Distracting. I would have ordered the lychee cheesecake, but alas my newly smaller waistline would not allow any more input for this sitting. Coffee was all I could take. Some other day, perhaps. With service charge and VAT, it all came to GBP 24.63. Overall, it was a good lunch, filling, satisfying, exotic in a familiar way, but no fireworks. And the service was accommodating, pleasant, and prompt. I'm eyeing the duck-and-green-mango salad for dinner. read more

I ate here a few weeks ago with my parents and brother on our family catch-up weekend in London, we received attentive service. We did not have a reservation so were seated at a terrible high table, which must be usually reserved for those just having a few drinks and snacks, which made eating in any elegant fashion difficult. The servers were very friendly and chatty, although it was a bit intrusive to be asked where we were from, but none of our accents really match each other all that much and the general idea of an Australian accent is crocodile dundee so there was probably a bit of genuine confusion and curiosity going on there. I ordered the Roti Canai as an entrée and the Indonesian Vegetarian Curry as a main. The Roti Canai was really tasty and so lovely and flaky, but there wasn't quite enough 'dipping curry' served with it making it a bit expensive for the price. The Indonesian Vegetarian Curry was absolutely beautiful having a well-balanced flavour, but there were so few vegetables and little tofu that it was quite close to being exclusively sauce! Quite a rip-off at £10.95. Every vegetarian knows that their dishes are offsetting the price of the meat and fish dishes, but that was a bit ridiculous. The name 'umami' is also a bit misleading as the word association immediately makes you think of Japanese and other East Asian cuisines seeing as umami is the 5th taste and predominantly comes from seaweed (I'm referring to the story of msg and glutamates.) This is the restaurant attached to the Crowne Plaza Kensington in London. Decided to come here on our first night since we were all exhausted from the trip and didn't want to brave the cold and rain outside. It was a slow Sunday night and somehow with so few customers, so was the service. The food took forever to get there. But once there, everything was surprising tasty. Some of the slightly spicy dishes actually did pack some punch, even for me who's​ not afraid to shy away from a challenge. At the end of the meal, it seemed impossible to get the staff attention to bring us the bill. After waiting so long we were just in a hurry to get out, even forgetting to check for a 20% off discount on the bill that the hotel had advertised. This of course we later found was not provided on the bill. Had it not been the slow service and mistake on the bill, Umami definitely would've deserved a higher rating. read more

Actually a surprising delight in terms of Asian food experience. Tasty starters but honestly go against the waiter reco and don't go for group starters cause they end up being more expensive than main courses. Definitely recommend the curry laksa and tiger prawns in tasty coconut sauce. read more

I was visiting London with my mother when she saw an advertisement for this restaurant, in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, very near where we were staying, and we decided to try it. We walked in at 6:30 and it was...deserted. We were a little put off by that, honestly - when a restaurant is deserted at 6:30 pm, you wonder what's wrong. But we decided to order and take our chances, and I'm glad we did. The food was delicious and the service attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is elegant and the menu was interesting. The spring rolls were steamed, not fried, which was novel. I had Malay beef and an asparagus side dish and both were delicious. The a la carte style menu means it won't be a cheap meal, but the food was very good. read more

This restaurant is the onsite restaurant for the Crowne plaza Kensington. I stayed at this hotel and ate at this place twice. I also had drinks here and the bar is lovely and the drinks were quite tasty. This restaurant is more about convenience then authentic Thai ,Indonesian or vietnamese food. If that is what you are looking for you may be disappointed. The restaurant is spacious and the decor is pretty. The menu is full of run of the mill choices like chicken satay and curries. If you are in the neighborhood or staying at the hotel its a not bad choice. I think the best way to put it would be, you will not be hungry when you leave, nor will you have complaints of a bad meal, you just won't be wowed. read more

My son and I were going to a concert at Royal Albert Hall and wanted to dine in the vicinity. Saw Umami online, read the reviews and sounded like a good choice. Sadly, the food was disappointing. The food was "toned" down despite our request for medium spicy for the Mee Goreng. I was really looking forward to the gado gado but this too was a disappointment. The salad was overwhelmed with bean sprout and had no cabbage, potatoes or egg which is standard. Felt the food catered to "Western" taste than authentic Indonesian - Malaysian. I have tasted much better gado gado and Mee Goreng in the bay area. My parents were Indonesian so perhaps my expectations are higher. read more

I would give this place 1 star for the prompt seating and ambiance. Food service and quality of food was not that great. We asked for mild food because some of our group do not eat spicy food. I asked for extra spice on the side and was told they have to ask the kitchen but none arrived. Therefore; I did not enjoy my meal. We are from the Bay Area, California where international food is prevalent. We are used to all price range and quality of food. We were a large number on the table but there was other table with large group also. What annoyed me more was being profiled. We always have to asked for water but all other tables were being catered to. Their water glass was always full. The servers made a mistake, they didn't know that we are from the State and are used to giving 15 to 20 % tip. We would have given more tip if they were attentive. I would like to give it 5 stars but when you order an entree you still have to order sides with it , I don't like that. Taste and atmosphere and service were exceptional.. Starters we ordered Roti Canai it was amazing. We shared Lamb Curry with two sides Steamed Fragrant Rice and Wok fried Pak thai noodles also amazing and desert we shared Kuih Dada this is Coconut and palm sugar filled Crepes if you love coconut this is the ultimate desert but next time I am getting this for myself.
