So it was no surprise when I encountered a line snaking out the door and a packed house when I entered. I was dining solo and was told I could just grab a seat on the patio if I didn't want to wait to be seated inside. Fine by me. I was impressed with the quick, efficient and friendly the service given how insanely busy they were. Food, drinks, and smiles came to my table expeditiously and abundantly. The Angry Calamari and a side bowl of Pho Love was a perfect pairing of goodness. Everything was so fresh, spicy, and flavorful, hitting my umami spot just right. Umami is an extremely crowded vietnamnese spot that have three branches in Berlin. The interior and overall setup and design is nicely done, but food wise I really don't understand any of the good ratings and why people want to visit this place! The pho for 7.80€ was disappointing. The Buddha roll that was recommended was disappointing. Extremely hard and thick dough that tasted like being brought from the grocery store next door. Mekong for 8.90€ and Pakse Pan for 7.80€ was also disappointing. There was not a single dish that we truly enjoyed or found good. It was simple average and below average. If you are looking for a good vietnamnese spot, skip this hyped place in my opinion. There are far better places in Berlin. read more

Of course it's not typical German food but after all the gluhwein and huge sausages, we wanted to try this Vietnamese restaurant. The design style is awesome! Japanese lanterns and beautiful layout inside. We looked at the extended menu and were amazed, so much delicious dishes! Eventually we chose the family menu for us three. When the food came we were kind of taken back, so much food; soup, fried chicken with salad, beef with mango, delicious sauces and rice! It was a battle to finish that immense amount of food. But it was so delicious and worth it! The service was excellent and really quick! The price is on the high side for Berlin but for the quality and amount it was totally worth it! Great fusion place. There is nothing to complain. I've been here twice now, and both times it was great. The service is pretty good. The waiters were nice and everything was quick. The food is tasty! It's a fusion, of which I'm normay not a big fan, but this was nice. =) The decoration is really awesome! It's a great place to bring a date. Oh, and they have really pleasant music! So many nice details that make your experience very very pleasant. And the prices are increadibly low. Where else do you get a "fish pot" (marinated & grilled salmon with frech beans, carrots, ginger and garlic refined with caramelized ume-sauce) served in a beautiful rice pot for €7,4?! Maybe you can get that somewhere cheaper, but not in this area. And even if you'd get something similar in an "imbiss" around the corner, it wouldn't be in such a nice place with good service. I've been in Berlin for three months, and Umami was hands down the worst dining experience I've had here. They've tried to shove as many tables outside as possible, but it has made it impossible for them to serve those seated furthest. We were shoved, jostled, and at one point, even asked to get up to they could deliver food. When our order was finally being taken, a woman interrupted our server to ask a series of questions. Rather than say, "I'm sorry, please wait", she chatted with her for some time until one of my German friends said, "Excuse me, she was in the middle of taking our order!" The food was tasty, but not worth the terrible service. Our dishes were plopped down in front of us, no eye contact, never asked if everything was ok, or if we needed more drinks. But boy, did they try and whisk our dishes away to get the next person in. Three of the people I had dinner with are locals, and they said it was the worst service they've had from any restaurant in recent memory. It may be trendy right now, but a restaurant needs good service, in the end. I would never recommend this restaurant. I will never return. read more

Coming from New York, this place was extremely affordable and the dishes looked great! Amazing cocktails and drinks. We got the family meal for 2 which was the perfect amount of food. The soup was a bit too salty and the main dish should be called mango slices with a side of steak (too few beef slices). Also wasn't a fan of cold/lukewarm main dish. However, the fried chicken was nicely done reminding me of the Taiwanese fried chicken I would get at night markets. Dessert for us was 2 small sesame balls with mango sauce, I think I would have liked to try the sticky rice. Highlight was their drinks. Green tea mojito was very tasty and also got non-alcoholic koh rong morning which seemed very popular. All in all a fun experience in a Disney-esque atmosphere. As others have mentioned, check out the bathrooms! I don't usually get Asian fusion but it exceeded my expectations and for the price, I really can't complain. Umami (うま味) is a Japanese word that means something like a strong meaty taste. There are no Japanese dishes on the menu so if you are Japanese or are looking for traditional Japanese food that you might find at an izakaya, sushiya or shokudou, you won't find that here. It's much more of a Vietnamese restaurant. The menu is split 50/50 with meat and non-meat dishes. It does have some vegan options. The food was just okay. I got pho with beef but the beef was rubbery and tasted like it was in an airplane microwave. It was pretty bad and I was done after a few bites. read more

They have really old beautiful stuff like old phones, gas lamps, clocktowers, grammophone and lots of darf wood. The menu is really nice too, hard to decide because everything sounds so delicious. Check out the drink section they have amazing and creative choices. I tried summer rolls (best souce!) and scampi with sweet potatoes as well as pumpkin curry with chicken and rice. Everything was amazing. There are many vegetarian and vegan choices too, and nice desserts although sadly I was too full to try any.
