Ok so after following all the comments and rave reviews on a Facebook group, I finally dug in and ordered. I mean people were borderline fanatic on a Commerce residents group and I'm a pizza lover so I had very high expectations. I ordered a small antipasto, a small 10" so- called "Detroit style pizza, the biscuits, and their breadsticks. $60 (with Delivery and $5 fees; thx slice app!). Upon delivery it LOOKED impressive and again was very hopeful that this was about to change the pizza landscape for all. Upon taste it did nothing of the sort. Detroit style was like a pie with pizza topping inside it. That's NOT Detroit style. Matter of fact that's a disservice to the likes of the true style. "Toppings" were undercooked while the crust was a bit tough. Breadsticks were bland and doughy. Biscuits were actually crispy. Antipasto was very amateur and the Italian dressing was nothing but oil. Highly disappointing experience overall. Have no clue what the rage was about. This was failure on a pretty high level. Not going to bother with UP again. Sticking to tried and true pizza joints. Will say the pics of the food came out looking amazing but the fulfillment of the product was very dissatisfying. read more

I would like to let you know how disappointed i am with my order and the price I paid. The big new Yorker i was under the impression with the pictures online that it came with pepperoni. It was just cheese. I ordered the meat lovers Chicago style pizza add jalapenos. It came with just the peppers. I spent $50 for the wrong pizzas. This is so disappointing. I normally don't complain like this but when I see a well-reviewed place I haven't tried and my first experience is bad, I know it's valuable to others. To start, I called in to order a large pizza with two toppings half-and-half with Cajun crust. The guy repeated my order but didn't give me a total and quoted me 25 minutes to pick up. That's a pretty long time, but if it's worth it, I am happy to be patient. Anyway, the guy had a rude and aggressive tone (he cut me off to get off the phone, etc) but that's something I can deal with on a Saturday night since I know pizza joints can get extremely busy. I shrugged it off. Problem is, the guy didn't repeat Cajun crust on the order readback nor was it on my pizza when I got it. I guess I was supposed to interrupt HIM to get what I wanted- my mistake. I took my time getting there, a little after 25 min went by. Got inside and the guy at the counter was nice. He rang me up but the total over $18... for a two-topping pizza?! I handed over my card thinking that was excessive but this is the "best pizza in 100 miles", right? Nope. Now I can't tell you the total on my order because I was not given nor offered a receipt. Also not good. I come to find out that "4 ITEM" was scribbled in sharpie on the pizza box, which is VERY shitty. None of Ultimate Pizza's competitors stoop to charging double for half and half, but if they DO, they warn you of the upcharge. Then it is fair. This ain't. My rules are pretty simple: don't rip me off. If you do, you get a bad review because you earn it at that point. I thought it was bad form to not give me a total for my food upon order, but that combined with writing 4 ITEM on the box and not offering me a receipt makes it clear that this was done on purpose. So the one thing that could salvage this- how is pizza? Nothing special whatsoever. Doughy crust, substandard cheese, and sparse toppings despite charging me double. Double ouch. I will admit the sauce was pretty good. Not $18 good, though. Obviously, I'm not coming back here and you shouldn't believe the hype. This is gas station pizza and you have better options for what they charge. read more

The first time trying this place was when they first opened. I would have given them a 5 based on service and taste. Every single time after has gone downhill from there. I would recommend sticking to pizza and chicken only, and don't order even close to closing time or you may find yourself getting your order canceled (happened to me once). Also, don't get the fish. Unless you want to smell rotting, nasty fish for the rest of the day in your house. Yes, it stinks that bad. read more

VerdicTL;DR: Probably the best pizza you'll find in the Brighton area ... that is if you can find the place. Ultimate Pizza is a take-out only (literal) hole-in-the-wall located inside a grocery store (likely where the deli counter used to be). They are completely unrelated to the grocery store, so don't grab a soft drink in the grocery store and expect to be able to pay for it at their counter. They serve three styles of pizza: hand-tossed, Chicago-style deep dish, and Detroit style. Their Chicago-style deep dish does take 45 minutes to make, so I was only able to try out their hand-tossed and their Detroit style. They also, for some strange reason, do fried chicken. A weird combination ... but whatever. Let's start with the chicken. It's quite good: made fresh on the spot, it's crispy, flavorful, and moist straight out of the fryer. Their homemade ranch dressing is very good. Dylan is proud of that dressing for good reason. He, by the way, seems proud of everything that he serves -- and it's clear that he (and the others who work at Ultimate Pizza) cares deeply about the taste and the quality of the food that he serves. He had us sample just about everything! The hand-tossed pizza is the one forgettable thing about this place. It's doughy, the crust is soft, and the sauce has a strange metallic tang to it. It's not altogether bad ... just forgettable in comparison to the other things that they do. I have to mention that they do pizza by the slice here. There was an old pepperoni pizza in the hot box that had clearly been sitting there for a bit. Instead of serving me a slice of that, Dylan and his crew baked a fresh pizza just so I could have a slice. That, my friends, is dedication. Though I'm not impressed with the hand-tossed pizza, I am so impressed with the work ethic and the drive. The Detroit style pizza, on the other hand, is amazing. There is no burnt cheese crust -- so I think of it more as an Old Forge (as in Old Forge PA) style pizza. The dough is light and airy, with a crunch that gives way to an angel food cake-soft texture inside. The sauce is robust, and does not have the metallic aftertaste that I experienced on the hand-tossed. The cheese is cooked just right. This is very well-executed, and I would have this any day. I imagine that the Chicago-style deep dish is equally good. I want to end with this. On the merit of the food alone, this would be a 3-4 star review. Dylan and his crew are responsible for bumping this review up to a 5 for me. They are so kind, so friendly, and just so excited to have you sample their food. They are clearly proud of their work, and they exude a gritty pride that is so emblematic of the Detroit area (and southeast Michigan in general). When you see these young men hustling, filled with such obvious care for their craft and such fierce pride in what they do, you can't help but to be struck by the feeling that you are watching the very spirit of Detroit in action. For this is Detroit: down, but never out; behind, but never beaten; ridiculed by the food culture of the East Coast and the West Coast, but with a fearsome culinary tradition of our own. We didn't invent cars; we invented how to mass-produce them. We didn't invent pizza; we invented nationwide pizza chains. Dylan and his crew *are* Detroit. We *are* Detroit. And surely, any place that can make you feel this way is deserving of a 5-star Yelp review. read more

I can't believe how delicious this place is, I flew into Detroit from San Diego and was referenced to this place by my Uber driver, delicious is all i have to say, they have amazing customer service and even more amazing food. I spoke with Dylan and he advised me to get a Chicago deep dish, (So good) and a cheese pizza with jalapeño and pepperoni (wow)! Found this place through Door Dash, placed an order to pick up on the way home from work. They are hidden inside a little market, kind of a hole in the wall. My order had just been boxed up and the counter guy, Dylan happily greeted me enthusiastically. His genuine enthusiasm was refreshing! I told him it was our first time trying Ultimate. He welcomed me, gave me a sample of a chicken tender (So fresh and tasty) and made sure I tried their ranch (omg soooo goood). He opened my pizza box ( Chicago style deep dish, pepperoni, extra cheese) to show me the deliciousness. He is very proud of their food and it shows. Ok, so we had the pizza and a side of mini tacos. The pie was truly the best I've had in the area. Zesty sauce, tasty cheese, spicy pepperoni and a delicious, chewy crust. The mini tacos were also very good; crispy, spicy lots of filling. And of course the ranch. It's SO good! The food is worth 4 stars. The extra star is for Dylan and his coworker (s?).
