I liked it a lot The next day we went back and I ordered a pint of the same flavor. That pint was then instantly polished off in the parking lot. Gosh I love this little place. Had never been to this location but I'm into it. It's a bit hidden and small. It feels like a little ice cream secret. sadly we went right before they closed so they were running low. Good sign of a good place with fresh stuff. I did try a few. The strawberry cheesecake was creamy and delicious and not too sweet. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch (with cereal milk) was exactly what it sounded like. WOW!!! The ice cream is delicious and local - love it! Ordered the Belgian Chocolate and the Mint Chip. Both delicious and creamy. Really enjoyed seeing all the creative flavors, along with classics. The interior is quaint and perfect for an ice cream shop. There is a large chalkboard available for getting creative (chalk is provided) and it had me laughing at some of the 'art'. Ultimate Ice Cream is a little hole in the wall in the back of a small strip off of Tunnel Road. They offer various flavors, including some non-dairy options, in a variety of formats: cups, cones, etc. I tried the vanilla oreo cream in a waffle cone, and my wife tried a kids cup of "cup of joe" - their version of coffee ice cream. The good: the ice cream is extremely smooth, high quality, and delicious. The housemade waffle cone was one of the best I've ever had, with a perfume of vanilla that made the whole shop smell delightful. Their coffee ice cream truly tasted like coffee and was perfectly sweet. Service was friendly and prompt, and prices were completely reasonable for locally-sourced, gourmet ice cream. The not so good: the inside of the place was a bit of a dump. We eat with our eyes, and the view into the back office area with its patchwork drop ceiling and scattered binders and folders everywhere, not to mention the haphazard display of their flavors in the freezer case up front was a little off-putting. Also, their coffee machine wasn't working which was a bummer since I definitely could have used a little pick-me-up and was looking forward to a nice beverage. Ultimate ice cream was delicious, don't get me wrong. However, I think they do have some room for improvement. The flavors are fun and amazing, and they let you taste test before you buy. Unfortunately seating is limited and the way the line is set up I felt rushed to decide because of the long line. People left upset since the line was slow. And then there's only a few tables, some inside and some outside. We ended up sharing an outside table with a gentlemen. Maybe they could layout the inside a bit better to add more tables and multiple lines? Otherwise, the ice cream was great. Stuffed though we were from our 12 Bones excursion, we couldn't pass up an opportunity to visit our beloved Ultimate. The flavor variety is mindboggling. It was hard to choose, but they will give you tastes of anything you want to try to help you narrow it down. One blend with bleu cheese (!?) caught my eye, but ultimately I had to go with my seasonal fave, Pumpkin. Once Husband had a taste of mine, he had to double down on it, it was so good. Seriously, if you had never had pumpkin flavored ice cream before, and were trying to imagine the Platonic ideal of what it should taste like, this would pretty much be it. Creamy, full of earthy pumpkin, a delicious blend of pie spices, and just the right amount of sweet. I forgot they do kid scoops here, so to my own detriment I ordered a regular single scoop. Whatever, man, it was worth it! --Though I will now remember and stick to my usual preferred kid scoop in the future :) The help is always friendly here, and though I didn't see the owner this time, I've met him a few times before, both in the shop and at LEAF, and he's always been kind and chatty, and seemed to remember me a bit, even though I only see him about once a year. Some may complain about the pricing here, but I feel a lot better about spending ~$3 on a plentiful scoop of delicious, local, artisanal ice cream than I would throwing it at a tub of Edys or something. Being a local, hole-in-the-wall creamery, Ultimate Ice Cream definitely should have performed a little better. It is tucked into a little corner behind Bouchon, a French joint, so many people probably know it as the cool place to get iced dairy. I dropped in for a night cap to my night in Asheville, and I was excited for something unique and delicious. Unfortunately, the offerings of the day were extremely ordinary: vanilla, strawberry, mango. Also, the pricing is fairly steep, at $3.50 for a small. Sure, the joint is local, but I do not enjoy expensive, but mediocre sweets. Key lime caught my eye, so I thought it would be fairly tasty. It was actually very boring, almost like sorbet flavor, with an ice cream texture. It was not nearly creamy enough, and it was just extremely boring. I would not recommend UIC for someone looking for a local institution to waste their dessert calories on. There are plenty of bakeries in this hippie town, so shoot for something else. read more

But they're staffed with nice people that don't mind handing out samples (and do sample b/c there are "odd" but great flavors like bing cherry with goat cheese). Even though there are so many flavors, I would recommend getting the "popular" ones as they sell quicker and, therefore, are fresher and less icy. If you're with a group of people, and can stand to share one flavor of ice cream, it's cheaper to share a pint. I got the salted caramel which was good but, like I said earlier, too sweet. Can't get enough of the ever changing menu selections with something new to try or sticking to our favorites that are always there like a good friend.
