Soft Serve with Rainbow Sprinkles
John G.

These ladies are so kind and serve the best soft serve in the area!! Today my 3 year old daughter decided she wanted sprinkles after our order had been prepared and the young lady serving us was more than happy to oblige. I offered to pay but she refused. It's the little things in life Asheville!! I'll be sure to leave her a juicy tip our next time through!

Drive thru line moved really fast. The young lady at the window was super nice and friendly. I got the mini banana split cup and it was amazing. Highly recommend!!!

I think even the smallest of towns have had something similar to this Tastee Freeze over the years, it's building may have been abandoned or repurposed by now as the mom and pop operations entered it second or third generation or the branded ice cream stores have opened with their new fandango twist on something as old as ice cream, ice creams probably began around 500 BC in the Achaemenid Empire (Persia) I'm sure it was a much different take on the product we ate as a kid and even more different than today's novelties with the advancement in refrigeration that allows creativity that is only limited by one's imagination. This little shop looked closed from the street as I drove by, but at the last minute I did see a car appear down the side of the building where apparently the drive-up window is, so I flipped a U-ey like any good Floridian would do and whipped the Fiat into a space right out front. Like most of the old fashioned ice cream shops the entire front window was plastered with placards of the treats offered here and there were piles of bananas ripening in the glass below the advertisements. I tend to stick to the basics when it comes to ice cream so a cup of the vanilla soft serve suited me fine. Like most shops of this nature the young employees didn't seem to be overly motivated but they were polite and got the product to me and I left a generous tip to their astonishment. This place didn't bring a tear to my eye and it didn't have me reminiscing about years gone by but it sure did bring some relief from the Carolina sun...

You can order ahead of time and then Drive thru to pick up!

This is now called The Freeze. This is a local hangout. A staple. An icon in Asheville. You got to get a cone at The Freeze!

Yep, just like the one in the John Cougar song. Don't expect home made ice cream here. Soft serve with lots of gooey toppings.

It's frozen custard at it's down-and-out drive-in ice cream stand at its best on a hot and muggy evening.

This little food truck offers an amazing experience you can't get anywhere else in Asheville:…read morePeruvian style Pollo a la Brasa, rotisserie chicken marinated with Peruvian chiles and spices. If you think you can get something similar at a Mexican restaurant or by buying a grocery store rotisserie chicken with chipotle seasoning, you are so wrong. This is truly a thing unto itself, and it is delicious. I've had it pulled off the bone and served with rice and vegetables at other Peruvian restaurants outside of Asheville, but to have it mostly on its own, with sauces, a side of fries, salad, tortillas or rice, really enables you to appreciate the chicken for its amazing self. It's marinated overnight and during the rotisserie process, too, so it's not just the crispy, slightly charred skin that tastes of the spices and chiles, it's also the juicy, tender meat inside. It has a nice smoky flavor as well. Not hot spicy (unless you dip it in the red sauce from here, which is fire!). They also provided a creamy avocado sauce, which is great mixed with the red sauce to lower the heat just a little and give it some contrast. The fries are also great dipped into these sauces. The whole chicken with 3 sides was enough to feed three of us (all pretty big eaters) with some leftovers. The service was warm and friendly. There are 3 outdoor picnic tables by the side of the truck, but this is a place to get wonderful food to go that you can't get anywhere else in Asheville. So it enjoy at home or on a picnic someplace in the woods or a park. They also have dishes that are more traditionally Mexican (tacos, stuffed tortillas) and weirdly, also bratwurst. I'm not sure how this got in the mix, but they are from South America and a lot of Germans did immigrate there. We'll definitely be back. The problem will be convincing ourselves to try anything else when the Peruvian chicken is just so dang good.

Seriously obsessed with this place. Try the chicken, the tacos, or get a papusa! The have a bell…read morefor when your food is ready.

There is also a decent amount available, and a handicapped space with a ramp right by front door. Overall access is pretty easy. Walking in, the ordering counter is directly in front. Seating is all tables with a few stools along the counter. It is relatively small inside with seating for about 40, but there is also outdoor seating on either side of the building. One side has a nice gazebo with a picnic table, and other picnic tables have an umbrella for shade. There is a small stream running behind the restaurant making for a nice setting but eating outside you will have some road noise. They are known for their cheeseburger, Reuben, and Philly cheesesteak, according to the owner. Accordingly, we ordered a Reuben, cheesesteak, cheeseburger, and hamburger, plus a basket of fries and a side of onion rings. Even during the lunch rush the food only took about ten minutes to be brought to our table. The Reuben contained plenty of meat on a marbled rye bread. The sauerkraut was present but not overwhelming and there was plenty of cheese for a cheese pull. This was a very good sandwich. The cheesesteak was another winner. There was a good amount of meat and plenty of cheese. The added peppers and onions took it over the top. Both the cheeseburger and hamburger were also very good. The meat is seasoned and flavorful, the added lettuce and onion fresh, and the bun soft. The basket of fries easily satisfied two people. The fries were meaty and a little crispy. The onion rings were also good, with a soft onion inside a crispy batter. It can get a little noisy inside when they get busy, but the service is impeccable and friendly. We were checked on several times to make sure we were enjoying our food. Once you have eaten here, this is the type of place you look forward to returning to often.

You order at the cash register and then find a seat. The staff is very welcoming and warm. I was there with two other friends and we ordered three entrées and we wanted to share. We had the sweet sausage, a cheeseburger, and a Philly cheesesteak. Everything was just the way I remember from childhood. Walk don't run to this great little spot in Woodfin!
