Helen worked miracles and now our beloved first child (our dog) and baby can safely coexist. We also took puppy training classes with Helen and these were great for teaching our dog basic manners. I cannot say enough good thing about Helen; she is an extremely capable dog trainer and a genuine person, I highly recommend her.

I have been meaning to write this for a while now but after our family vacation last week with our…read morelittle "angel" Prissy, I knew I had to make it my priority. I got Prissy from NorthShore in January as a puppy and was told she would be no more than 50 pounds full grown; seven months later she's already 64 pounds and I don't think she's done growing yet, but she's precious and healthy so it's all good. I've always had dogs but like most in my generation, you just had them; we never thought about training. Well, at 52 years old, I knew if I didn't start a good training program with Priss right away, I would regret it. I visited the local franchise pet stores but I didn't feel very confident in their abilities. As soon as I met Helen I knew she was the "one". We began with a Basic class and I immediately saw the possibilities. When Prissy started to actually do what I was telling her to do, it blew me away; what blew me away even more was that I was learning more than she was at a time when I thought my "learnin" days were over (the nest had just become empty and I guess I was feeling it more than I let on). Helen made me look at almost everything in a new way which in turn helped Prissy. She is all about confidence and praise which really, really works. Don't get me wrong, Prissy is most definitely a bull in a china shop but when I tell her to sit or lie down or leave it (just to name a few), she does it (she really does it)! Which brings me to the vacation. We drove to Lake George and stayed at a beautiful rental home for the week before dropping my wonderful son off at college. I was sure I would never see that security deposit again but I was not going to let that hold me back. However, Prissy was so well behaved and listened and didn't jump and walked beautifully on leash and didn't ruin the house... thanks to Helen! Granted I was the one caring for and training and "monitoring" Priss, but without the confidence Helen instilled in me, it would not have been possible. What you need to know most of all is that every bit of the information and training Helen gave me was all done almost without me even knowing it; she's never boastful or condescending or any of the bad things you might associate with learning. I don't know how she does it, but she does it. We often talk about the need for a class for just the owners because we really are the ones being trained; something I didn't believe before I started. I'm sorry this was sooooo long, but I am always blown away when I realize I'm in command of this big, loving, precious, doofy animal and it's always done with love and compassion, again, thanks to Helen's guidance. If you just brought a new angel into your home or if you've had an angel with you for a while, you owe it to yourself to at the very least meet with Helen; I'm sure you will see what I saw. It's never too early or too late to be the pack leader... you just need to learn from the best leader in town. Thank you Helen; for everything. Oh yeah, you will have so much fun with Helen you will not believe you're learning anything at all, BUT YOU ARE!

If I could give zero stars I absolutely would. I had dropped my 11 mo Labrador off on Wednesday…read moreSept 22 and called Sept 24 to see how he was adjusting. I was told he's doing great and coming out of his shell as he was nervous when I dropped him off. I didn't hear from anyone until Tuesday October 5th (the day before pickup) when I received a voicemail from Mallory that she needed to speak with me. When I returned her call I was informed that my dog had a rash on his neck and wanted to tell me before picking him up the next day and it shouldn't be a "cause for concern." She stated that the day after he was dropped off, staff noticed a tiny itchy, dry spot on his neck that progressively got worse. She continued to repeat that they didn't want this to be a cause for concern and naturally concerned, I asked to be sent a picture of the rash. This was no rash at all. The picture I was sent showed my dog next to a trainer with a raw, oozing wound where his jaw meets the base of his neck. It looked very infected and he definitely needed medical treatment so I immediately went to the facility to pick him up. When I arrived, I did not find my dog in the same condition as shown in the picture I received just an hour earlier. His wound was dry and completely scabbed over. The staff stated the wound looked much better than before (because it was healing). I immediately took him to the vet for a thorough exam and our vet diagnosed a skin infection of the hair follicles caused by injury to the skin. He also estimated that the original picture I was sent earlier that day was taken at least a few days prior. The vet also estimated that this injury occurred at least a full week prior to the training staff notifying me. Not only did my dog have an infected injury on his neck, he also had an infected wound on his testicles, had lost a significant amount of weight, as well as developing upper respiratory infection. Prior to sending him to the facility he was a big overweight with a very thick coat. The dog I picked up had lost at least 10 lbs and his spine and hip bones can be felt to the touch. The picture I was sent from staff showed a very obvious infection and the staff neglected to care for my dog or notify me that he needed medical treatment and attempted to treat this wound themselves with only A&D ointment. When asked about the 24 hour veterinarian on call mentioned on the training facility website, the staff stated they do not have a veterinarian on call. A bit misleading. After examining the neck wound we noticed small bumps around the sides of the wound that seem consistent with a pronged collar. We don't know how these injuries occurred but it's very clear our dog was NOT properly cared for and the staff neglected to provide our dog with basic medical treatment or at the very least inform us that our dog needed to see a vet. I will NEVER recommend the Dan Gentile Training to anyone.

I'm writing now because we now have a new puppy and I was looking for training places and this place came up and brought up bad memories so I felt I needed to write our experience. We dropped our dog off and went on a trip so she could go through the program. Coming back to pick the dog up we couldn't wait to see our dog thinking she would be so excited to see us but to our surprise our dog was subdued and looked defeated. No tail wagging or anything. Before the trainer showed us what they did, she commented that if WE didn't follow directions we had to put $25 in this jar. We laughed it off as though she was kidding but to be honest I don't think she was. They walked us through what they did and the "progress" and mind you they had a spike collar on the dog so when you pull it digs right into their neck. The trainer was showing us and she pulled so hard my dog let out a painful yelp! It looked like torture to be honest. We immediately said we are done here and left ASAP! My dog eventually recovered and we found a dog trainer that used positive enforcements and she became her happy self again

Our main concerns before hiring him, as…read morewe told him, we enduring our dog does not become reactive, aggressive, and does not attack children as we have two young kids and children coming in and out often for events. Our first visit Matt told us his dog attacked his child on three different occasions. This didn't sit well with us AT ALL, but we decided to try a second session because we paid $580 and obviously wanted to get what we paid for. The second session I mentioned how our dog was very nippy and I'd like advice how to stop that. During this time he informed me his child just had a birthday party and his wife knew not to do it, but she let their dog out of the crate and he attacked a child. Matt seemed more concerned about his image as he said that it was embarrassing because everybody knew what he did for a living. This didn't sit well with me AT ALL and after discussing with my husband, we agreed that having a dog trainer who owns a reactive dog that attacks children can't possibly give us the tools we require to ensure our dog doesn't become like that. If he's unable to control his own dog then how can his advice and training rollover to his clients dogs? We hired Matt on false pretenses. Had he been upfront and honest with us that he had an out of control dog, then we would have never hired him. He refunded 1/3 of our payment due to him being uncomfortable working with us due to our concerns, which is laughable as we shared valid concerns. We 100% deserve the full refund since he was dishonest when we hired him, because no he could not give us the tools required to ensure our dog wasn't aggressive towards people or children since his dog is reactive dog. I'm truly disgusted by his business and for what he charges for 3 sessions considering he can't even train his own dog. So hire if you want, but be aware Matt has a dog in his home who attacks children so if that's the kind of dog trainer you want then go for it. I personally would rather hire a trainer who can control his own animals though.
