If I could give zero stars I absolutely would. I had dropped my 11 mo Labrador off on Wednesday Sept 22 and called Sept 24 to see how he was adjusting. I was told he's doing great and coming out of his shell as he was nervous when I dropped him off. I didn't hear from anyone until Tuesday October 5th (the day before pickup) when I received a voicemail from Mallory that she needed to speak with me. When I returned her call I was informed that my dog had a rash on his neck and wanted to tell me before picking him up the next day and it shouldn't be a "cause for concern." She stated that the day after he was dropped off, staff noticed a tiny itchy, dry spot on his neck that progressively got worse. She continued to repeat that they didn't want this to be a cause for concern and naturally concerned, I asked to be sent a picture of the rash. This was no rash at all. The picture I was sent showed my dog next to a trainer with a raw, oozing wound where his jaw meets the base of his neck. It looked very infected and he definitely needed medical treatment so I immediately went to the facility to pick him up. When I arrived, I did not find my dog in the same condition as shown in the picture I received just an hour earlier. His wound was dry and completely scabbed over. The staff stated the wound looked much better than before (because it was healing). I immediately took him to the vet for a thorough exam and our vet diagnosed a skin infection of the hair follicles caused by injury to the skin. He also estimated that the original picture I was sent earlier that day was taken at least a few days prior. The vet also estimated that this injury occurred at least a full week prior to the training staff notifying me. Not only did my dog have an infected injury on his neck, he also had an infected wound on his testicles, had lost a significant amount of weight, as well as developing upper respiratory infection. Prior to sending him to the facility he was a big overweight with a very thick coat. The dog I picked up had lost at least 10 lbs and his spine and hip bones can be felt to the touch. The picture I was sent from staff showed a very obvious infection and the staff neglected to care for my dog or notify me that he needed medical treatment and attempted to treat this wound themselves with only A&D ointment. When asked about the 24 hour veterinarian on call mentioned on the training facility website, the staff stated they do not have a veterinarian on call. A bit misleading. After examining the neck wound we noticed small bumps around the sides of the wound that seem consistent with a pronged collar. We don't know how these injuries occurred but it's very clear our dog was NOT properly cared for and the staff neglected to provide our dog with basic medical treatment or at the very least inform us that our dog needed to see a vet. I will NEVER recommend the Dan Gentile Training to anyone. read more

I used this training center a few years ago before yelp was available and I would not recommend using this place! I'm writing now because we now have a new puppy and I was looking for training places and this place came up and brought up bad memories so I felt I needed to write our experience. We dropped our dog off and went on a trip so she could go through the program. Coming back to pick the dog up we couldn't wait to see our dog thinking she would be so excited to see us but to our surprise our dog was subdued and looked defeated. No tail wagging or anything. Before the trainer showed us what they did, she commented that if WE didn't follow directions we had to put $25 in this jar. We laughed it off as though she was kidding but to be honest I don't think she was. They walked us through what they did and the "progress" and mind you they had a spike collar on the dog so when you pull it digs right into their neck. The trainer was showing us and she pulled so hard my dog let out a painful yelp! It looked like torture to be honest. We immediately said we are done here and left ASAP! My dog eventually recovered and we found a dog trainer that used positive enforcements and she became her happy self again read more

If I can give this zero I would. Me and my boyfriend took my 6 month old German shepherd for the two week training. We paid over 2k for this. When we took him home he was doing great for about a week. We did everything we was suppose to and followed instructions. He started having behavior issues after we took him home. He started walking on the pool cover and drinking the wart that would come up we would tell him "come" and he would just look at us for a second and go back to drinking the pool water from above the cover. Mind you there's a bowl of fresh clean water inside. He started ripping up couch cushions and just not listening. I called this place maybe about two months after to see if we can get him back in for a little more training the lady that pick up said she would give the message to the owner... fast forward THREE WEEKS LATER still no call from the owner. I called back and spoke to a young man who said he was new and that there was no record of me calling so he said he will give my message to the owner and will contact me the very next day...... it's been another THREE WEEKS AND STILL NO CALL IN RETURN. Even tho on the contract it says life time warranty that we can take him back there for refreshers..... till this day never got a returned call... I would call everyday and they wouldn't pick up. Next step I'm going to just show up there and either demand a refund and get him the proper training or they can retrain him. Which I don't even want that option because how misleading this place it ! DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE!!!! read more

We took our German Shepherd puppy for training because we heard that this was the best training facility in the Tri State area and the owner has owned many full breed Shepherds, so we felt confident going. I do see some bad reviews and some great reviews and this is a great review. Our dog was not mistreated and it is the cleanest facility I have ever seen. This isn't a luxury spa, it is a dog training facility and board dogs while training which is so smart because the dogs aren't going back and forth from training to home. We wanted our puppy to obey our commands and as he grows, remains discipline so we don't have to worry if we have friends and kids over. My husband and I both feel that sending our puppy to Dan's training center was the best for our family and puppy. I highly recommend them. Please, keep in mind, this is a training and boarding facility and not a doggie day spa. So, some of these reviews, the owners have a misconception of what a training facility does. A great program that lasts a lifetime. Dan's team trained my 2 German Shepherds 12 years ago and they were spot on. I could not be any happier and satisfied. All of our friends always in awe with their behavior and discipline. So amazing, my new German Shepherd just finished the program inclusive of off leash training. Still amazed by the results. This is hands down the best training center in NJ. The staff are all well trained and professional. Some of the people leaving reviews here do not know what they are looking at. From the first visit to the center I was informed that positive reinforcement is focal point of all the training. My dog loves all the staff and loves seeing them when I take him to board here. He is a large protective Giant Schnauzer and I would know instantly if he was mistreated which is not the case. !!PLEASE I BEG YOU NOT TO SEND YOUR DOG HERE!! To start things off, we have taken one of our shepherds here before and had a positive outcome the first time around. So when that shepherd passed and we got our new baby we figured we might as well take him back there again. He was doing great at the psycho training but we wanted more for him. When we mentioned to them at petco that we were taking him to Dan Gentile she told us "Please don't take him there, they will break him". Unfortunately we did not listen to her warning and they did exactly that to our baby. They broke him, not just mentally but physically as well. He was at their "training facility" for 2 weeks with no phone call or visitation. When we went to go pick him up after the 2 weeks and finally saw him I look at my mother and said that's not our dog. He was severely malnourished, and terrified. Did he behave? Absolutely because he was scared he was going to get beaten. Before we even took him home we went right to the vet because we noticed when we picked him up he had a bad rash on his belly which THEY THEN TELL US THEY SAW IT AS WELL BUT THOUGHT IT WASNT ANYTHING TO CALL US ABOUT. He was also dripping green discharge from his nose. So when we got to the vet and she weighed him she told us he lost 6 POUNDS while he was away. 6 POUNDS that's a lot for a growing German Shepherd puppy!! He was only a year old! Not only that, he was so dehydrated that he needed 2 bags of IV fluid pumped into him AND he had pneumonia!! He had to stay over night at the vet to be monitored to make sure he was healthy again. To make matters even worse, we called Dan Gentile to tell them that he's sick and that he got sick while in their care, they denied it and said we don't have any sick dogs here. Not an hour after we called Dan Gentile did we get a call from our vet saying that Dan Gentile called THEM to see how he was doing and what was wrong with him. Our vet was calling us to ask if it was okay that they told them. Of course we said yes! Let them know what they did to our baby! Well, we never heard from them again and now our dog is traumatized and hates being around other dogs and barks at anyone or thing he sees outside. After going through his horrific incident with him we thought we'd never get our baby back to normal, but then Green Lead pet resort came into our lives and I have nothing but kind words to say about them. Shelly is absolutely fantastic and took his time with our baby and made sure he got the correct training he needed. They kept us updated with his progress and we were able to drop him off and pick him up everyday. He still has trauma with other dogs and doesn't play well with them but he does respond better to us now and listens when need be. If you really wanna spend some money and make sure your dog gets the proper care, attention, and training needed them please go take a visit and see Shelly at Green Leaf pet resort. ***PLEASE SHARE*** Please share this post if you care about the welfare of pets in the NJ shore area. The Dan Gentile Training Center in Howell NJ is actively neglecting and preforming misconduct to animals, as observed from myself from my experience working there. I have since left. Aside from just harm to the pets that go there, Dan is charging thousands of dollars for promises to train dogs when he or any of the trainers there do not even see them to so much as let them outside to the bathroom. They lay in their own excrement for varying periods of time. They sit in a concrete kennel for their entire 14 day stay, next to the other 21 dogs there and paperwork is forged to say specific times that the dogs are trained and worked with. It is told to customers that their dogs play outside throughout the day when they go days without even being taken out of their kennels and when they do, it's for very short periods of time (5-20 minutes a day, not even everyday). They are completely understaffed, allowing for full days where un-certified or even trained employees such as myself are caring for dogs whose owners have paid thousands for them to be seen by professionals. They cannot keep staff because employees refuse to stay and use Dan's "training" methods, threatening their jobs and pay if they do not. The "trainers" are made to take every phone call coming in and that takes away from the time they are supposed to be spending with the dogs. They don't tell owners about the "training tools" they use and owners have to find out they have been using choker collars on their dogs (which are shared and not cleaned in between dogs) for 2 weeks and are forced to buy the collars and leashes when they pick their dog up. I've spoken with some owners of dogs who have recently been there, whose health have drastically decreased, whether it is excessive weight loss, lack of appetite, bloody stool and vomit, or overall fear of human contact. Many dogs in their care have experienced these issues, which are not expressed to their owners while they are there, and documented as being fine, eating well, etc when they are not even eating. They give the dogs well water to drink that has a very pungent smell to it. Dan says "always tell the customers that their dog is doing great, no matter the situation." Kennels are not scrubbed daily, (They don't even own a scrub brush as far as I have seen) but instead are sprayed with a disinfectant mixed with Dawn and water to "clean" them and just hosed off after and not properly dried. The concrete kennels are very old and have many holes and cracks where the dogs can harm themselves and bacteria thrives where it is completely unsanitary. I experienced a case where a dog came with anxiety medication that Dan refused to give to the dog. I understand that this place has a decent positive following and many years open, but that does not take away from what I have witnessed behind the scenes. read more

Where to begin. If there was a choice of less than 1 star it would still be a higher rating than deserved. I can see why these individuals deal with animals over people, simply because animals are voiceless victims not given the gift of voice to be able to say they were mistreated or how they feel. It is up to their caretaker to determine if they are acting out of the ordinary, limping or otherwise. This "establishment" does not give dog owners a review of daily activities containing time slots including the basic needs such as toileting, feeding, or physical activity. Additionally, the personnel at this facility do not give a report of the dog's demeanor whilst boarded whether it be an upset stomach or if they were jumping all over the chain-link/ cement kennel they stay in enabling them to break every single nail on their paw which is exactly what we were sent home with-all broken nails to start. In our particular situation, they called us 2 days early to ask if we could pick our dog up so they could clean (if we could pick him up we wouldn't have boarded him). They said if we couldn't pick him up they would "continue to care for him". Really?! You will?! Well I hope so since currently that is your designated role. When he was picked up on his designated date he was coughing and sneezing as if he was exposed to chemicals and they just "cleaned around him". I had noticed his eyelids were swollen, naturally I took pictures to document (as well as his broken, fragmented nails) and I have hundreds of pictures to compare. I have never seen him so uncomfortable as he pawed at his ears and seemed as though he was choking-which I have video footage of as well to document (later the vet said he was "reverse-sneezing" to be confirmed later in this review). I wanted to see if he would get better and didn't want to freak out, but he was in fact getting worse and increasingly more lethargic and as a puppy he should be exploding with energy, ready to play as usual, and he wasn't. I was wearing a grey hoodie and noticed a spot of blood on the sleeve. I wasn't bleeding but my dog's lower jowl was. I thought this was strange due to the fact that my dog doesn't spontaneously bleed or bite his jowl by accident. That's especially true because in vertebrates the definition of jowl is the loose, fleshy skin around the jaw and lower teeth and in our particular breed he has slightly hanging jowls. I then noticed a blister on the tip of his tongue and I kicked myself for bringing him to this place. He was shaking his head like he had an ear infection and what broke my heart the most was when he cowered at our touch. Off to the emergency clinic on New Years Day we went. When I called to ask questions there was no information regarding any other sick animals for dare I say the buzz words used these days "contact tracing" and aside from that I'm pretty sure they were clearing my calls as that day I had called over 5 times. They said "yea he barked a lot". Really? A dog barked? Brilliant. Not only did he have diarrhea for 2 days, which was most likely from the obvious food change; but after we were finally seen at the ER the symptoms he presented with were that of Kennel Cough (evidenced by the reverse sneezing mentioned earlier-which by the way is comparable dog's version of COVID-19- which can lead to death in a canine), a double ear infection, and allergic reaction. This place may seem as though "tough love" is advertised but we need to ask ourselves how tough and in what conditions? They individuals seem cold and off-putting, they don't show you what is behind their doors, nor do they show you where they are trained/ let out to play, I can imagine a prison has a nicer yard area. Shutting down seems like the best choice for this place. The staff that currently works there seems to have been brainwashed to think that whatever they get paid is enough to not tell their customers that dogs have left and have been sick recently (this has happened recently to other canine guests and they too left with the same symptoms) to keep their mouths shut or like the feeling of "being in charge" over such a naturally loyal, loving being. So in review, my dog left this place with all broken nails, blisters in his mouth (the bleeding mentioned earlier), cowering at the possibility of human touch, diarrhea, and what looks like pneumonia (aka a highly contagious sickness Kennel Cough). We left with an increased sense of betrayal, a new vet bill upwards of $300 after the holidays in 2020, plus when we paid for a bath there he still came home smelling like urine. The advice that should be taken from this message is to do your research and go with your maternal/paternal instinct and not to board loved ones here. DO NOT USE THIS TRAINER! Have been waiting for a month for a call back from the owner after my dog, who was never aggressive before sending her there, bit someone the day after she got home and now growls at any person who approaches me while walking her. I believe she was neglected and abused the entire time she was there and is now afraid of all strangers. Have called multiple times to speak to the owner who has never called me back. They are "shocked" by my dogs behavior because she was not aggressive at all during training. We can not have people in my house because I no longer trust my dog around people and I have 2 young sons who can no longer have friends over. This place should be closed down. We no longer can take our dog to our kids soccer games, dog parks, or to families houses. The worst decision of my life has been to send my dog to this trainer. read more

Do not bring your dog to this place. Dogs are family members,almost like children in your home. They need to be taught properly, but lovingly as well. Ask yourself-ask them-how are they training these dogs behind the scenes? What are their "tactics"? What are they doing to get them to listen to a few commands that is such a "secret"? Archaic is the perfect word. We brought our beautiful 8 month old, sweet lab here, upon pick up they told us that she was "stubborn & one of the hardest ever to train" They changed her disposition. She was scared & shivering & anxious when we picked her up for lesson after 2 wks & beyond for months. Not the same...it was heartbreaking. I believe it was a traumatic experience for her. And for many other dogs that attend. However they train-it is NOT OK-with their sticks or electric shock sticks....or whatever method they employ. Dan Gentile is an old school, gruff, aggressive, & abusive to his staff. Of course, on the phone they are promoting their business & want your $. But the women there are not warm either. I was told by a many people (after the fact) how awful it was there....wish I had known prior. How can they do these things? Horrible. Save your dog from the heartache. Dan and his team are excellent trainers! We adopted our beautiful 5 year old golden retriever (Gracie) from a rescue a few weeks ago and soon found out that she was afraid of everything and extremely skittish... she had obviously been abused as she cowered and crawled out of fear after a life of being used as a breeder dog in a puppy mill. After a few days at home, I realized she needed some help to overcome her issues. I called Dan and spoke with him about her special needs, and he reassured me of his experience with rescues from puppy mills. The 2 weeks that she spent there has turned her around and she is definitely on the road to living a happy, healthy life in her forever home! Sent my 1 year old Rhodesian ridgeback to Dans training center. I picked her up pleasantly surprised to see how calm and well behaved she was. We got her home 9/10 and she slept the entire day. The next morning we took our dog to my 8 year old sons soccer game. An uncle of my sons teammate approached us to say hi to my dog. As soon as he put out his hand for her to smell him she growled and lunged at the man. Before sending her to training, my dog was never people aggressive. I was taken aback by her behavior and completely confused as she has never acted out like this. I sat away from the other families for the game and another mom who has met my dog multiple times and played with my dog came over to see her. I warned her that her behavior seems to be off since she got home from the trainer. My friend was unconcerned and said don't worry I know her she will be fine. As she was saying that my dog pounced and bit my friends hand as a warning bite to back up from us. I immediately got up gave my husband the dog and checked on my friend and advised my husband to call the trainers. He spoke to the manager who said it could be an adjustment period for her and to wait a few days and to let them know how she was. They also advised us that she was not aggressive at all during her time at the camp and that her behavior was unusual to them as well. Over the next 4 days I was not comfortable taking the dog out alone and the training we paid for went out the window. now we needed to make sure our dog was not people aggressive instead of trying to keep up with her training. I have 2 small children who I now could not trust my dog to be alone in a room with. On 9/14 my husband took the dog for a walk and ran into my neighbor who had known our dog since we got her a year ago and she growled at him when she saw him. Another trait that has never happened before we sent our dog to Dans training camp. When we called the trainers back a second time their only suggestion was for us to bring her back so they can see how her behavior was. I will never bring my dog back there because I believe her behavior stems from her being there. When we told them that we offered for them to come to our house to check the dog, because we are afraid to have guests over now since we don't know if our dog will bite someone trying to come into our house. We were then told The owner of the training facility would call us back and we are still waiting on his call 2 days later. I sent my dog for training and got back an aggressive watchdog. Not at all what I wanted with 2 small children at home. I would not recommend unless you like to throw $2000 down the toilet. read more

It has been 2 years since our Great Pyrunise went through the training and he is still the best behaved dog I've ever seen.

Simply put do not bring your dog here unless you are ok with outdated and archaic training methods that are far too rough in order to have the dogs listen to their commands. Also a complete disregard for care/nutrition instructions for your pet. Our dog was fed a different brand of dog food and a type that she has an allergy to even after being assured that would not be the case. When I asked why that happened i was told "because I wanted to beef her up". Meanwhile her vet said she was perfect weight and we've never had an issue in that department. Dog was absolutely petrified after coming home for several days due to the very loud boarding conditions with a large fan and many dogs in a small space. Concrete dog runs with inadequate bedding. Highly recommend an in home trainer or training yourself if possible. read more

Please - do not take your dog here. Do yourself a favor and read the reviews. If 0 stars were an option, I would have given that. When we dropped our dog off (lab mix), he was a loving dog who did not sit, stay or lie down well - but he loved people. When we picked our dog up after training, they showed us the skills that he learned with one of the female trainers. He could follow commands wonderfully. During the demonstration, Dan Gentile entered the room. All of our dog's hair stood up, he showed his teeth and was aggressively growling at him. Dan Gentile told the woman handler that she was not correcting him for his aggressive behavior..which he had never showed before. I was in shock. I had asked about that behavior and was told it is normal and that he would calm down eventually. I brought my dog home and he was completely different. He did not trust me, growled at me when I approached his food and showed aggression towards any person (but was worse with men). I contacted Dan Gentile's company and was told sometimes it takes time to adjust when they come home and to give it some more time. My dog growled every time we put his leash on and began showing signs of leash aggression. We could not take him on walks, to the vet or to any public place without him showing aggression towards other people. Our dog could sit, stay and lie down with no problem - but all of that is pretty useless when he no longer trusts anyone and shows aggression. It took us MONTHS to break his newly formed habits. I do not know what happened to him at this facility, but I feel that I failed my dog and have forever changed his behavior due to my choice to send him here. I had to hire and spend more money on an aggressive dog behaviorist (Bully's Behaven who is WONDERFUL and I highly recommend), and although our dog has improved, he still shows signs of aggression and fear towards strangers and his prong collar at times. For the safety of your dog, do not bring your pet here. It is not worth risking changing your dog's personality forever. (On a side and unrelated note, Dan Gentile also has no respect for his staff. My husband and I witnessed him berating and belittling his staff in front of customers which speaks to his character.) read more

I have been in awe since we picked up our 1 year old Labrador a few days ago. The staff who was there to greet us when we picked up, was fantastic. Gave us the confidence we needed to continue with the training process before we left. Made sure we were comfortable before we went home, which was encouraging to say the least. Our boy gained two pounds while he was there and more importantly gained basic manners that will be reinforced at home. My 11-month old Cane Corso just returned from a two-week training program and I am stunned by the results. I dropped off a nearly 80-lb high energy puppy with no self control and picked up a well-behaved young lady. The trainer took her time with both my daughter and I to make sure we understood the proper way to reinforce everything the dog had learned. She's a puppy, so we expect some mistakes, but I've already seen dramatic improvement her first day home with our other two dogs. I left my crazy, unruly German Shepherd/American Staffordshire Terrier four month old puppy with Dan and his staff and picked up two weeks later a perfectly behaved puppy. The transformation was so startling that my brother said they found a twin puppy and swapped them. Three years later she is a well behaved, happy and loving dog. If I had followed all of Dan and his staff's instructions she would be perfectly behaved but even with slacking off a bit she is the best behaved dog I've ever had. Dan and his crew are great. We weren't even able to walk our Weimaraner before Dan. He walked us. Also couldn't get our pup off the bed - fixed that, too. Dan changed those and many other behaviors. All his trainers are readily available by phone and encourage you to come for refresher sessions. Even when I've called multiple times they've always been helpful and patient. Dan Gentile has trained two of my Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Ridgebacks are known to be very sensitive and do not respond well to harsh treatment. My girls are very well trained and when we took them back for a visit they loved him. I highly recommend this training center. read more

My sister and I just got our dog back almost a week ago and the change is remarkable. We have a one year old German Shepherd who was defiant, completely non submissive, nippy and had absolutely no off switch, he was high energy all the time even though he had a huge back yard to run around in all day. He was impossible to walk. Besides teaching him the basic commands, the most important thing they taught him was how to be submissive. He is 100% calmer and easily controlled an entirely different dog than what we dropped off. Now that he understands that we are in control his anxiety level has greatly decreased and is overall a much happier dog. I am positive that with continued reinforcement he will be even better. Took our dog there for 2 weeks. When we picked him up I noticed black bumps on his paws. They weren't there when we dropped him off. Our dog was sneezing the entire time we picked him up. When we got him home he was so sick, we took him to the Vet and he had an upper respiratory infection and dermatitis. Vet thought he had pneumonia. It cost us almost $500 to treat our dog. When I called to tell them at the training school the woman never asked how our dog was or said she was sorry. He was healthily when we brought him there because he needed all his shots to get in there and he was checked out by our vet. I'm very disappointed that they didn't see the BIG black lumps on his paws and call us, especially after they give the dog a bath before they go home and now I'm wondering how long he was sick there. Also disappointed about the lack of sympathy from this woman. I won't bring our dog back or recommend his training school.. Very, very dissapointed. read more
