I started my Private Pilot Certificate at Embry-Riddle but…read moreeventually switched to Epic Flight Academy to finish after hearing such positive remarks from different friends and pilots. I was able to easily maintain my college courses at Riddle while flying with Epic, so flexibility is possible. From dispatch and maintenance staff to Instructors and Team Leaders, every Epic employee exceeded my expectations in terms of a family friendly learning environment. The C-172S aircraft were all in excellent condition, equipped with G1000. The Epic ramp area is well maintained along with KEVB in its entirety, and you simply can't beat its beautiful location in terms of its Class D airspace. However, as a student veteran, I would have liked to see Epic Flight Academy accept VA benefits to allow student veterans to gain assistance in finishing the remaining flight ratings at Epic, but they do not at the moment. Overall, I would highly recommend Epic Flight Academy for obtaining your Private Pilot Certificate, or any other certificate or rating you wish to pursue.

Dont get me started on the housing department either. The same people that own epic own the apartments they use for student housing, one half is non students and the other half are students. The non students (for a two bedroom apartment NOT beachside and NOT in a good spot) pay 1600$ a month, so why is it that the students pay 3200$ a month for the exact same apartment split 4 ways. They cram 4 people in a 2 bedroom apartment and charge the students double. It doesn't take a genius to notice that this is a cash grab/scam. Fuck this place and fuck getting scammed. All the good reviews are for the flight school, for the pilots, anyone can fly a plane but how many people can fix them? Take care of your students and stop scamming them.

It is was a very casual yet professional experience which kept it low-stress. I am a relatively new pilot so was a bit apprehensive about doing this rating in the Beaver, but Tripp assured me that they have experience with low-time pilots and he didn't lie. If I am ever in the area again I would stop back just for a hangar chat anytime.

At the end of the course I got few hours in the plane logged but cannot say I became proficient in it. One thing I did like a lot about them was the aircraft! They have beautiful and very well maintained airplanes. I flew the Beaver but they also had a nice amphibious Husky which I didn't fly. If I rated them based on this factor alone it would be solid 5*. The instruction was ok, not great. Water takeoffs, landings and taxi was covered, but I wish it wasn't as superficial. The bigger problem in my opinion is inadequate curriculum. The instructor tried to jam everything into 4 hours and of course it all was way too rushed. I've never seen the POH/AIM for the aircraft even though I asked for it multiple times. (By the way the explanation I received was it's because the airplane is so heavily STC'd that I wouldn't be able to understand the POH. I am an active CFI, commercial pilot, and instructor pilot with US Air Force CAP.) There's was no airwork done, not even the slow flight. Again I asked the owner about it and he argued that doing airwork would make it hard for him to compete with other schools that offer similar 2-days programs and since I'm not going to solo their aircraft why spend time on it. And speaking of 2 days, if you are a visiting pilot and want to take the 2 day course I suggest you plan to stay there at least for a week. The local weather patterns are bizarre, every morning there was a dense fog, thunderstorms in the afternoon. Obviously it's not Ryan Aviation's fault in any way but something to consider when planning your trip. Bottom line. I would give 5* for the equipment and maintenance, 3* for instruction, 1* for the training program. I will probably look for another school next time I fly seaplanes.

Our entire family (utter beginners, lol) took surfing lessons with Sean a few weeks ago and had a…read morefantastic time. He was prompt with communication and was there waiting for us when we arrived. After brief instruction on the sand Sean patiently pushed us in time and time again and coached us as we went. I'd never surfed before and I have to say it's much harder than it looks (as are most things we try for the first time). My 6yo daughter was nervous at first but Sean switched tactics and found a way to get her to LOVE it. He actually had her stand up and hold on to his head for balance, lol. She went from "I'm scared" to "That was fun, can I do it again?!?" in just a few minutes. My 11yo son and I are short on the balance side so weren't as successful as my husband who was able to ride some waves in. Sean was laid back and timed it well between instruction on the sand, breaks and instruction on the water. Prices are great too. Each of us said we'd love to try again. I'm going to be working on popping up on dry land until I can do it on a board!

She is encouraged through her mile stones and loved through the growing pains. I am informed about her day and involved in her care. The owners are fabulous and the girls there are great. My three grandsons visited for spring break this year. While they were here I signed them up for…read moresurf lessons with Rick at Surfari surf shop. When you take surf lessons with Rick you don't just get some paid employee that runs you through a "program". You get the owner of the business that tailors the lessons to your individual abilities and needs. My three grandsons are 17, 15 and 11. None of them had ever surfed. Rick started them out on the sand showing them where to positon themselves on the board and how to get from the prone to standing position. He told us at the beginning of the lesson his goal was to get all three of them "up" riding a wave. I thought he was being optimistic since the lesson was 1.5 hours with three kids but I was wrong. During the lesson all three boys were able to get up and ride a wave. They were thrilled. Rick stays in the water with them the entire lesson going from one to the other helping them steady on the board and pushing them off when needed. After the lesson Rick lets you use the boards and if you need them wetsuits to practice so we stayed at the beach for a few hours while the boys practiced. I can't say enough about how Rick connected with the boys. He was engaged with them the entire time. For what you get the price is fantastic. Individual instruction and the use of the equipment to practice makes it totally worth it. We took my oldest grandson back for a 1 hour individual instruction the next day and now he is hooked on surfing. I can't say enough about how good of an experience this was for my grandsons.
