Awesome! The owner (Smiley) changed the strings on two of my Ukeleles while we waited. He was extremely detailed oriented and changed the strings that were way over due to be replaced. He also let us know that new strings require a lot of tuning every time you pull your Ukelele out of the case as the strings need to acclimate to the change. He did an absolute wonderful job. This is THE BEST place to go if you are interested in buying a ukulele. They have many selections, for every budget. We wanted to buy a beginner model that produces good sound but won't break the bank. Smiley, the owner, walked us through the different options - first, he explained the sizes - soprano, concert, tenor, etc., Then he explained the difference between all solid wood construction vs a wood top with laminate body. We were able to try them out one by one and pick the one with the sound we liked the best in our price range. There was no pressure to buy and he was balanced in his recommendations based on our interest and budget. And he let us take our time with each instrument before we decided. It is a small mom and pop shop so when there is more than one customer at a time, you may have to wait your turn. The owners are also very low key and gave us the space to look around until we were ready to ask for help, which I appreciated. So I disagree with some of the negative reviews here. We were so pleased with the selections and the help we received, we bought a solid wood Ohana ukulele, plus a nice case to protect it. Come support a local business if you are in the market for a ukulele, instead of looking in the store and then buying online on Amazon. You won't be disappointed. When I need strings for my Mele, I trust Smiley at Ukulele Source to provide me with what I need. Lately, Smiley has observed that the Aquila strings that I previously had have been inconsistent these days and has switched over to another brand called PHD, premium high-density strings made of a polymer of higher molecular weight and density which produces superior volume, sustain, and playability. Additionally, Smiley understands my low G preference and installs and tunes my Mele accordingly. Additionally, I brought in an inexpensive childhood soprano ukulele that I thought I wanted re-strung to which Smiley asked, "Are you planning on playing that?" Me: "Well....uh.....yeah." After a pained look, Smiley suggested that I keep the original strings and play the ukulele as is. The Ukulele Source is a small ukulele store located right in the heart of Japan town. It's located on a corner and kind of hard to spot so just keep an eye out! They have a great selection of ukulele for beginners and for advanced ukulele's enthusiast. They have a variety of soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone ukuleles for a pretty good price. For beginners, you can buy a very pretty good ukulele for about $100.00. It's better to visit a store and try out then to buy it online so that you can see which of the ukulele size you may want. Plus shipping might ruin just ruin your ukulele due to heat and packaging. They carry pretty much everything that you may need here such as tuners, ukulele bags, etc. Also, they'll give you a free ukulele chart, which I find super useful Smiley and Janet are super sweet and friendly people. They have such a cute Bichon Frise (Heidi)! I enjoyed playing with their dog while I was waiting for Smiley to get my ukulele. Also, Smiley was very helpful and sat me down after I purchased my ukulele and taught me how to play a bit just so I know how to hold it right and ways to strum it. Overall, I do recommend this place. I had a good experience here and with the owners. It might get a little bit busy and sometimes they can't help everyone so you might have to wait a bit, but I guess that just shows that a lot of people do like this store. The Ukulele Source has a wide range of ukuleles! I spent an hour trying out all the ukulele before I bought Islander MT-4. The prices are "discounted" already, but I found cheaper prices online ($10 less). I still bought one in store to support local business, and you never know if shipping will ruin the fragile ukulele (due to the temperature in shipping trucks, humidity, etc.). My ukulele didn't come with a case, so I had to buy one as well. Pretty pricey in the end, but the lady (Janet?) gave me a free ukulele chords sheet at the end. :D How nice of her! Great experience! My husband randomly wanted to learn how to play the ukulele and he found this cute little shop in Japantown. I never thought we would ever find a shop dedicated strictly to ukuleles, especially one this close to us! Smiley and Janet, the owners of the shop, were extremely helpful and friendly. Being that neither of us knew squat about ukuleles, Smiley helped my husband pick out a nice ukulele that wasn't too far out of his price range. He even gave us both an impromptu mini lesson even though the store was about to close! They were so patient with us and we never felt rushed. Was in the market for an ukulele and I'm so glad I found this place. They had a great selection of different brands of ukuleles ranging from low to high price range. The best part is that you get to try the ukes before you buy. They even let us try out the Kamaka ones. Maybe one day I'll get one of those it was a little busy when we were there, so we didn't get a lot of help, but that's ok cause I kinda knew what I wanted. The only reason it's a 4 and not 5, it's cause after I paid for my uke, I asked the lady if it can get tuned because I wasn't sure if the gentleman that packed it up tuned it, since he packed it at the back of the store. Her response was for me to keep playing it cause the strings will stretch...umm ok, I get that, but can you still tune the thing. After reading all the positive reviews, I was sure that I was going to find some pleasant folks eager to help me upgrade from my cheap beginner model to something a bit nicer. I was on the search for a solid Hawaiian made uke from one of the 4 "coveted K" companies. I've done research, called around and found that not too many stores carry them in stock since they are considered higher line. I called a place in Sacramento (about an hour and half drive for me) and they had ONE on display for sale. Since this one was on display (exposing it to nicks and dings) and because ukes are all unique in appearance due to the natural wood patterns, I asked if they can send me photos via text or email. I didn't want to make the drive there just to see one and it have damage on it. If I'm going to spend $1400 on my first real uke, I'd like it new. He refused. I called Ukulele Source and Smiley told me he had one on display and two new ones in the box. I asked if he would be kind enough to send photos and he agreed! Of the photos, I mentioned I liked one of them and he asked if I wanted it to be put aside until I can come see it in person. I told him that I would not be able to come for five days (It's a two hour drive for me and I would have to manage my work schedule) and he still said he would hold it. I came in after four days... He and Janet are so low key and relaxed. Very nice people and I felt they are so sincere. No pressure at all. Very knowledgeable and I learned quite a bit from him. See.. I'm new to this and this is like putting a 16 year old into a Ferrari.. I tried to learn guitar when I was in the seventh grade. It was the wrong time for me; I was a disciplineless, unmotivated, unfocus'd, unrefinable, impatient youth of about 12 years old; that age where everything I wanted, I wanted to do with all of my heart. For about 3 weeks. Then on to the next, "Mom, please? Can I...? I promise!" Guitar. Drums. TaeKwanDo. Painting. On and on. Thing after thing. So, when I walked into this boutique shop today to look around, I had to keep my hand on my wallet and my heart in my chest lest I jump at the chance to take up yet another [potentially short-lived] interest. Smiley (and Janet Kai) was most welcoming of my questions and browsing! What an incredibly friendly and helpful experience; we talked about craftsmanship of the ukuleles, sound, lessons, range, preference. At the end (my "browsing" became a 20-minute introduction to everything!), Smiley even taught me a few notes and chords... (the "oh, this is kinda difficult, but cool!" hit me right away!) The small shoppe, and by small I mean tiny, does exactly what it needs to; showcase ukuleles aplenty, vend booklets and CDs, and provide an outlet for the beautiful sounds and strums of music. Its a beautiful boutique in one of my favorite areas of San Jose; historical Japantown. Now, I didn't make a purchase today, but if (actually, "when") I do decide to start the ukulele, I know its at the Ukulele Source that I'm starting... The friendly and helpful owners. Warning, this review is for ukulele players. The rest of you probably won't understand. Just wanted to post about how cool Smiley and Janet, owners of Ukulele Source in Japantown in San Jose, CA are. If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, they're definitely worth visiting. I was down in San Jose for the NCAA Basketball Tournaments and stopped by to check out their humble shop. On one side of the shop are the "Chinese" ukes: Kala, Ohana, Mainland, and Nalu were well represented. There was also a Flea and a Fluke on the "China" side although I think those are US made. I would guess that there are at least 50 ukes on this side of the shop. All available to fondle and play with. On the other side of the shop was the Hawaiian made ukes mainly Koaloha and Kanilea. Smiley also had a few Kamaka ukes that I believe were sold as used... one was signed by Jake. There were perhaps 20 ukes on this side of the shop. Prices were very comparable to what I've seen on Ebay, and other various popular uke internet sellers. Sales tax is added of course. In San Jose, I think its 9.25%. It took 3 visits to the store and countless fondles of the ukes (lingering longer on the Ohana SK-21 and Koaloha Noah -- cute buggers they are) before I finally narrowed on a Koaloha concert and super-concert. No pressure from Smiley or Janet through it all. On the contrary, I get the feeling that they truly enjoy talking and sharing ukes. Visiting the shop feels like going to some cool people's house that has 100 ukes, all of which you can play with. I needed a night to think about the concert vs super-concert (as well as get permission from the fiance). Smiley gave me his cell phone so I could call him when I was ready to purchase the uke since I would not be available during their normal business hours due to the Tournament. He said, "I'll see you tomorrow". He gets it. They ended up opening the shop an hour before normal business hours so I could once again play the ukes. At one point Smiley and Janet reached deep into their stock to pull out 3 different Koaloha super-concerts and 3 different Koaloha concerts to test. Janet even handed me her own personal Koaloha low-G concert so I can better compare it to the super-concerts which were strung low-G. I ended going with a Koaloha concert and have ZERO buyers remorse fully satisfied that with Smiley and Janet's help, I ended up with the uke that was the best for me. All for a price that is comparable to what is available on-line. Couple other things about the shop: the whole shop is humidified so their ukes are well taken care of. Smiley and Janet also stock Worth and Aquila strings. Having had horrible experiences purchasing a uke here in Sacramento, I HIGHLY recommend checking out Smiley and Janet's shop in San Jose. Went in today to look for a beginner ukulele for a friend to take on a camping trip. The owner pretty much laughed at me when I said I wanted to spend about $40. I tried to explain that this was a starter to see if she liked it and that I might get her lessons across the street. He then told me that you can't show up at lessons with a cheap instrument like that. Worst salesman ever. Thumbs Up: -Very cute, family-operated shop in Japantown with nice owners. -A good selection of higher-end ukes. Thumbs Down: -A poor selection of inexpensive ukes. My husband and I have purchased two ukes in the $100 range with very good sound quality. You have to play a lot of low-end instruments to find a gem, but it is definitely possible. Since this shop only carries a handful of inexpensive ukes, we weren't able to find a decent instrument in our price range. The advantage of stores like Sylvan Music in Santa Cruz is that they carry a LOT of instruments at all price points, so you're more likely to come across something that sounds good in your budget. Of course, if you've never played before, it might be difficult to determine if something sounds good or not. For uke novices, Ukulele Source is a great place to go to get educated and buy an above-average (and probably a little more expensive than you intended) instrument. And parents looking to inspire future musicians--please don't buy your kid a cheap-ass toy uke!! Spend a little more at Ukulele Source and make sure to get something decent. I've always dreamt of being musical, and I'm a sucker for acoustic covers. So in So in pursuit of being musically inclined my wonderful husband planned to buy me a Ukulele for valentines. Internet research stated that our best bet in purchasing a quality uke was to go to professional shop. We came here on a Tuesday and the owner was very kind, helping me figure out the differences Among the DoZens to choose from. Of course, never having picked up an uke before, my first tactic was price. The owner spent about 15 minutes with me testing out the instruments and even attempting to teach me 4 chords and strum. I also really appreciated how he acknowledged my kids and was very kind and friendly towards them both. He wrote down the four chords I attempted to learn along with a chord chart. We purchased a Concert Kala, one of most inexpensive models, but leaving the store convinced I made the right choice. Found this place through Yelp, and loved it. Smiley is very friendly and answered all the questions we asked. The store is pretty small, but the collection of ukuleles make up for the size of the store. They have many brands; Kala, Ohana, Nala, KoAloha, etc... and offer soprano, concert, tenor, bass, and banjo ukuleles. (No baritone) As for accessories they have a good variety -- Cases, Books, CDs, Tuners. All in all, very good trip, I'm glad we got to check it out and I'm definitely going back for another ukulele soon! read more

Friendly and honest business. When I first arrived at the store, I imagined a much bigger store but it was about as big as my room (not very big). Yet as i was walking into the store, there were lots of expensive ukuleles on the walls, book stands, and a counter full of ukulele accessories. The man who owns the shop was very nice to me. The man sold me Aquila Low G strings for $8 rather than the original $12 and restrung it for me free of charge. He even taught me how to re-string at the same time! I will definately go back to this shop for my Ukulele needs. For such a small shop, I liked how there was still everything I needed to get for a ukulele.
