Everything about Live Wire is top-notch: Beautiful venue, superb sound and lighting, and a cocktail lounge that rivals any in our area. Add the courtyard with elevated deck area and it offers a cozy place for all. So many of our guests commented on the fact that they had never been there, and that it was now on their radar screen. However, their website noted…read morethat you had to make an advanced reservation to be admitted (per my understanding), so I dutifully made a reservation for 2. As it happened, we were able to make it here around 2:15 p.m. or so on a Saturday. We had visited once before over a decade previously, so I had no real recollection of it. The museum is located within a mile of the loop highway around Athens. We arrived and parked in the covered deck. To access the museum, you then walk down away from where you entered. I found the front desk and offered to show the young woman staffing it our tickets. She said that she did not have a way to actually scan those, so we were waived in... I liked a wall-exhibit as you enter: large letters spelling 'WELCOME' but formed from several types of mounted security cameras (none or some of which may be active...). You ascend a long stairway. to your left is some temporary exhibits. These were more of the 'modern art' variety. A series of rooms about Hiroshima and another room with sensory nausea-inducing video. In the opposite direction are the more static galleries. These are laid out roughly in accordance with art styles or time periods. There is a room devoted to colonial / antebellum Georgia, one devoted to Impressionism, one to 1930's Depression-era works, etc. I enjoyed these more than I did the modern wing. We finihsed up and headed out within an hour. The exhibit is free. Unless there is some travelling exhibit that is of particular interest, I don't think I'll likely be back within another decade, though.

With a diversity of exhibits in galleries filling the second floor, you're bound to view something -- perhaps many things -- that stops you in your tracks. Representation by the de Koonings, Renoir, Cassatt, Okeefe and other acclaimed artists, you will also be turned on to talent you likely haven't heard of. I was captivated by the photography of Jim Fiscus as well as the gallery featuring work of black artists. Regarding logistics: the museum is open every day except Monday. Check their website for hours. Parking is free, as is the museum. But if you can, consider putting a few dollars in the kitty to help defray expenses.

The performance space is outfitted with full recording capabilities and shares a green room and dressing rooms with Hodgson Hall. The box office is open Monday through Friday, from 10:00a to 5:00p and an hour before performances. Surface lot parking is complimentary for performances at the Performing Arts Center. This was our first visit to the facility. We drove to Athens to see the Branford Marsalis quartet. The venue was nicely appointed, with comfortable seating and amazing lighting. From our seats in the mezzanine, we were perched over the musicians, and could perfectly view the performance. Unfortunately, we were behind the speakers, so while our sight line was uninterrupted, the sound was uneven and dull. Armed with this new information, our choice of seats will definitely change for future events.

I hosted my 21st birthday at this place and it was INCREDIBLE. Everything, from the planning, to…read morethe payment, to the accommodations, to the actual painting session-- it was handled so professionally and yet it still felt so personal, I couldn't have asked for a better experience, especially because I had a lot of issues settling on a date. Kate was the person who handled this specific interaction and I'm not sure if that is always the case, but she is such an easygoing person and was so understanding and patient during our communication, and when everyone showed up to get started painting everything was already set up and the environment was so relaxed that it was impossible NOT to have a good time! Kate guided me to choosing a painting for my party that would fit within the time limits, and the options are nearly limitless so there is definitely something for everyone! Even the boys had a good time! Again, Kate is so relaxed and patient that painters of all levels were very comfortable and she was very helpful in answering any questions! Good to know: they do have adult beverages as well as sodas and water available for purchase! All supplies, including aprons, are included in the price of participating! In short, we had an incredible time and came away with gorgeous "party favors"--our paintings! Would love to come back for a class!

Their Tom Collins was so good it inspired me to start making it in my own home, though so far I haven't reached their level of taste. Only critique with Old Pal is their clientele. The establishment attracts a rather odd crowd of millennials who routinely make jokes from 2012 and cheer for Atlanta United. Male facial hair is disproportionately represented among these folk as well. Regardless, this is not a viable reason to demote an establishment's star rating so 5 star it is! Go Old Pal!
