I've only been to Uetliberg in summer, so imagine my surprise when out-of-town guests wanted me to take them in the dead of winter. Well... ask, and ye shall receive. The world on top of Zürich was a freezing, snowy, winter white. Gorgeous scenery on the way up, but no visibility on top. But still not bad for a quick peruse, and it was cute watching all the kiddies with their sledges ready to go down the hill. Just be sure to wear proper footwear, as the snow and ice can be quite slippery, even with the paved section of the road.

Definitely worth a trip if you are visiting the Zurich area. This mountain top venue offers incredible views of the city and country side. It only takes 10-15 minutes to walk from the train station to the top and is an easy hike on a paved walk way. At the top of the mountain there is look out tower that costs around $2CHF --- but even if you don't pay for the tower, you have an incredible view. There is also a cafe where you can grab a bite to eat and a beer. Transportation up to the mountain can be picked up down at Central Station and runs every 20-30 minutes. If you have the Zurich Card, this train ride is included. Check it out!

This is the holy grail in all of Zurich! I LOVED my time in this mountain. It was so beautiful and climbing all the way to the top was not tiring at all. There are small places that you can venture off of the path to get magnificent views of the city. Careful walking since some areas are slippery than others! This is a perfect place to visit for all age groups, yes even children and elderly people. Keep in mind that if you want to get to the top of the tower it's only 2 CHF. The line does get backed up at the pay station since there are no clear directions in English. Some people in line left since they didn't know what to do, but luckily for me someone came along and helped me out.

Uetliberg is the perfect place to go if you're looking to get away from the city. Plus, it's only a 20-minute train ride from Zurich. There are various hikes you can do, but we opted for the solar system path, which is more of a walk. It was a bit lackluster because we were expecting to see planets at each check point, but it was just the sun at the beginning, and the planets were just rocks. We didn't complete the walk but we did stumble upon the tower/view point. It's this structure, where you have to climb the stairs, and you'll get a fantastic view of Zurich. The entry fee says that it's 1 CHF but if you put a 1 CHF coin, it won't let you in. And if you put a 2 CHF coin, it won't give you change, but it'll let you in. Either way, it's definitely worth the entry fee.

This was so nice after a 2 hour chilly hike to find. Too bad they closed at 4:30, so for us, there was no glühwine!

What a nice little hike on a sunny fall afternoon, From Albisriederdörfli, we reached the summit soon. A 1.5 hour hike on nice trails through the trees, and at the top there was food and glühwine to please! We even climbed the tower to go 900m high, from there, all the mountains you can spy. Good for a hike, run, sled, or mountain bike. I`ll come back after snow, that I would like! The train can take you down every quarter hour or so, or stay in the 4 star hotel if you`d rather not go... The view is amazing, and it`s so accessible from Zürich, our little hike to Uetliberg was just too darn perfect!

Very accessible from Zürich HB by the S10. After a short walk up, you will reach the summit and have a lovely view of the city. Parts of the ascent are a bit steep, but most of the walkway is wide and there are benches. The tower at the top is worth the 2 Fr charge to go even higher. In summer the restaurant has an outdoor section with brats, pretzels, beer, etc. If you want more of a hike, start at Triemli station! (It takes about one hour to hike from Triemli)

There is another lookout point on top of a tower that's an additional 3 CHF per person to access.

Of all the used bike sales and bike auctions I've been to, this was by far the best --- and,…read moresurprisingly, the mellowest. Need a basic used city bike for getting to class and back? CHF 150. Want something simple to leave at the train station? CHF 100. Want an almost-new commuter with a working generator and V-brakes? CHF 400. Want a nicer bike for weekend rides? Well, that's a little trickier... Test rides are easy --- bring an ID to leave with the gatekeeper, and pop across the street for a few minutes. Checkout couldn't be simpler (as long as you bring cash) --- each bike has the no-haggle price on a form, along with the owner's name. You take the bike to the checkout stand, pay your money, and get your receipt; the operators deal with giving the money to the seller, so you don't need to wait for them to make change. No cards accepted, though --- so bring plenty of large bills, so nobody beats you to a good bike while you're at the Bancomat. I was looking for a good heavy-duty commuter for my wife, and a nice mountain bike for Altberg (and occasionally Üetliberg). The first one was easy --- quickly narrowed it down to a few, and picked a good one. The mountain bike was more of a stretch --- there were a few around, but several were too large, one was too downhill-oriented (I can live without three chainrings, but do need two), and many, many were too old (I'm trading up from a late-90s steel hardtail --- I don't need another). Did eventually find a 2005 Specialized FSR that had been pressed into city duty --- it's back in the mud and woods now.

Mountains? Check. Lakes? Check. Perfect setting for some ATV-ing? ... CHECK. Interlaken,…read moreSwitzerland is as close to heaven as an outdoor enthusiast can get; hiking, climbing, rafting, paragliding, ATV-ing.. sigh. Pure beauty, serenity and a side of adrenaline.. and if you're not from here, it also comes with one awesome tour guide: Daniel! He took us up in the mountains over a 3 hour long Quad (ATV for us Americans) trip. Most of our drive was on paved roads, some wider and straighter than others.. there were definitely lots of steep hairpin turns (fun!).. These gave my stepdaughter lots of much needed practice for if she ever wants to go atv-ing with us again, as this was her first time. The trip took us through beautiful nature scenery.. lots of trees, little streams, a couple of small farmer villages with chalet style homes and the occassional cow here and there. Personally, the rougher the terrain and the faster the machine, the better of a time I have. I may look girly, but I just hide my down 'n dirty adrenaline junkie side very well. From this standpoint, the short offroad portion of the trip was probably my favorite part! Since it started raining, this offroad rocky terrain (downhill) was nice and muddy-slippery. If you're not an experienced rider this may give you a run for your money. My first-time riding stepdaughter wasn't too enthused, but my husband and I had a blast and went up and down a couple of times. The real treat (stepdaughter will agree) after the off road fun was a surprise visit to a working, super small scale dairy farm that makes cheese and other goodies. Cows.. up front and close, fluffy, pettable cows. Oh, and lunch! Whoop. By the time we made it back down to Interlaken (the city itself is beautiful) we were soaked and muddy down to our underwear. Turns out it rains here in July - lesson learned. Daniel's wife came out with towels so that we could change into something dry.. Talk about hospitality and friendly service! Everything was awesome and so worth the money. Which, comparing it to other places such as Colorado, is extremely reasonable. Honestly, this couldn't have been more fun and Daniel couldn't have been friendlier. Rain or no rain, I'd return in a heartbeat!
