Mountains? Check. Lakes? Check. Perfect setting for some ATV-ing? ... CHECK. Interlaken,…read moreSwitzerland is as close to heaven as an outdoor enthusiast can get; hiking, climbing, rafting, paragliding, ATV-ing.. sigh. Pure beauty, serenity and a side of adrenaline.. and if you're not from here, it also comes with one awesome tour guide: Daniel! He took us up in the mountains over a 3 hour long Quad (ATV for us Americans) trip. Most of our drive was on paved roads, some wider and straighter than others.. there were definitely lots of steep hairpin turns (fun!).. These gave my stepdaughter lots of much needed practice for if she ever wants to go atv-ing with us again, as this was her first time. The trip took us through beautiful nature scenery.. lots of trees, little streams, a couple of small farmer villages with chalet style homes and the occassional cow here and there. Personally, the rougher the terrain and the faster the machine, the better of a time I have. I may look girly, but I just hide my down 'n dirty adrenaline junkie side very well. From this standpoint, the short offroad portion of the trip was probably my favorite part! Since it started raining, this offroad rocky terrain (downhill) was nice and muddy-slippery. If you're not an experienced rider this may give you a run for your money. My first-time riding stepdaughter wasn't too enthused, but my husband and I had a blast and went up and down a couple of times. The real treat (stepdaughter will agree) after the off road fun was a surprise visit to a working, super small scale dairy farm that makes cheese and other goodies. Cows.. up front and close, fluffy, pettable cows. Oh, and lunch! Whoop. By the time we made it back down to Interlaken (the city itself is beautiful) we were soaked and muddy down to our underwear. Turns out it rains here in July - lesson learned. Daniel's wife came out with towels so that we could change into something dry.. Talk about hospitality and friendly service! Everything was awesome and so worth the money. Which, comparing it to other places such as Colorado, is extremely reasonable. Honestly, this couldn't have been more fun and Daniel couldn't have been friendlier. Rain or no rain, I'd return in a heartbeat!

Of all the used bike sales and bike auctions I've been to, this was by far the best --- and,…read moresurprisingly, the mellowest. Need a basic used city bike for getting to class and back? CHF 150. Want something simple to leave at the train station? CHF 100. Want an almost-new commuter with a working generator and V-brakes? CHF 400. Want a nicer bike for weekend rides? Well, that's a little trickier... Test rides are easy --- bring an ID to leave with the gatekeeper, and pop across the street for a few minutes. Checkout couldn't be simpler (as long as you bring cash) --- each bike has the no-haggle price on a form, along with the owner's name. You take the bike to the checkout stand, pay your money, and get your receipt; the operators deal with giving the money to the seller, so you don't need to wait for them to make change. No cards accepted, though --- so bring plenty of large bills, so nobody beats you to a good bike while you're at the Bancomat. I was looking for a good heavy-duty commuter for my wife, and a nice mountain bike for Altberg (and occasionally Üetliberg). The first one was easy --- quickly narrowed it down to a few, and picked a good one. The mountain bike was more of a stretch --- there were a few around, but several were too large, one was too downhill-oriented (I can live without three chainrings, but do need two), and many, many were too old (I'm trading up from a late-90s steel hardtail --- I don't need another). Did eventually find a 2005 Specialized FSR that had been pressed into city duty --- it's back in the mud and woods now.
