Of all the used bike sales and bike auctions I've been to, this was by far the best --- and,…read moresurprisingly, the mellowest. Need a basic used city bike for getting to class and back? CHF 150. Want something simple to leave at the train station? CHF 100. Want an almost-new commuter with a working generator and V-brakes? CHF 400. Want a nicer bike for weekend rides? Well, that's a little trickier... Test rides are easy --- bring an ID to leave with the gatekeeper, and pop across the street for a few minutes. Checkout couldn't be simpler (as long as you bring cash) --- each bike has the no-haggle price on a form, along with the owner's name. You take the bike to the checkout stand, pay your money, and get your receipt; the operators deal with giving the money to the seller, so you don't need to wait for them to make change. No cards accepted, though --- so bring plenty of large bills, so nobody beats you to a good bike while you're at the Bancomat. I was looking for a good heavy-duty commuter for my wife, and a nice mountain bike for Altberg (and occasionally Üetliberg). The first one was easy --- quickly narrowed it down to a few, and picked a good one. The mountain bike was more of a stretch --- there were a few around, but several were too large, one was too downhill-oriented (I can live without three chainrings, but do need two), and many, many were too old (I'm trading up from a late-90s steel hardtail --- I don't need another). Did eventually find a 2005 Specialized FSR that had been pressed into city duty --- it's back in the mud and woods now.

Half a year ago I took my bike for a regular service in their branch in Oerlikon. My bike was…read moreworking fine at that point. They told me they would have to replace the chain and both front and back chainrings, ok sure, that's over 400 CHF. Since then I've used my bike to cycle to work and have been very careful with it. A week ago the front chainring broke, so I took the bike here since the Oerlikon branch is closing down. I assumed since I hadn't done anything wrong and since it broke after only half a year that they would cover it. I asked them to take a look and let me know. Today I receive a text saying that I have to pay 150 CHF. Turns out they've already replaced the part (now a second time) without asking me (when I explicitly told them to contact me first). They claim that the damage was my fault. Which sure, I guess they can't know, but I do and so either they gave me a defective part or installed it incorrectly. So now I don't trust them to work on my bike a second time. However, they tell me that either I pay up, or they put the bike in the original state and I still have to pay 45 CHF. If I'd never taken my bike here, I would still have a working bike but also 550 CHF more. I think I can see why the Oerlikon store closed...

Ken M. posted the first review of this place and it was so darn positive, that I had to schlep…read moremyself over to Hoengg for a look-see. I would agree with everything Ken said save for the fact that the bike I'm envisioning purchasing wasn't on hand. That's not to say that there weren't other fab alternatives, but I just didn't feel the pull of 'I want! I want!' when both scoping and test-riding the bikes. For sure if I lived in the area and needed an already-purchased bike serviced, then this place, too, would be my 'LBS'. The bike dudes are very friendly and helpful. I must also give one shiny star for the owner being super good-looking. -can't see why Ken M. failed to mention that salient fact in his review. :D
