Not having…read morefixed a flat myself since the mid-80s, I have been relying on bike shops around town to get my bike back up and rolling. This means that I've experienced a variety of prices, different wait-times for bike return, and varying degrees of service. Velo Citta is both the quickest I have had my bike returned to me and the most cost-effective. Other shops tack on an extra charge for servicing bikes that have not been purchased on premises. Other shops charge considerably more for fixing a back tire flat then for a front tire flat. Other shops tell you to come back at the end of the work day, or the next day. Not Velo Citta! I waited 15 minutes and paid 25 franks to have the back tire's flat fixed. All this from the fix-it dude and a smile and chill disposition to boot! I wouldn't wish a flat on anyone, but, if it has to happen, may it be in the vicinity of Velo Citta! Bonus: pop into Noir Cafe just a couple of doors down for a bevvie while you wait.

Want something simple to leave at the train station? CHF 100. Want an almost-new commuter with a working generator and V-brakes? CHF 400. Want a nicer bike for weekend rides? Well, that's a little trickier... Test rides are easy --- bring an ID to leave with the gatekeeper, and pop across the street for a few minutes. Checkout couldn't be simpler (as long as you bring cash) --- each bike has the no-haggle price on a form, along with the owner's name. You take the bike to the checkout stand, pay your money, and get your receipt; the operators deal with giving the money to the seller, so you don't need to wait for them to make change. No cards accepted, though --- so bring plenty of large bills, so nobody beats you to a good bike while you're at the Bancomat. I was looking for a good heavy-duty commuter for my wife, and a nice mountain bike for Altberg (and occasionally Üetliberg). The first one was easy --- quickly narrowed it down to a few, and picked a good one. The mountain bike was more of a stretch --- there were a few around, but several were too large, one was too downhill-oriented (I can live without three chainrings, but do need two), and many, many were too old (I'm trading up from a late-90s steel hardtail --- I don't need another). Did eventually find a 2005 Specialized FSR that had been pressed into city duty --- it's back in the mud and woods now.

Not the newest stock (there's a good coat of dust on the bells), but this crew knows how to turn a…read morewrench. Two people working, and two bikes in the stand when I visited --- only place in the area I've seen that's this focused on the mechanical side of things. The new bike selection inside is small but well chosen, and the used bikes are... eclectic. The Dutch bike I was riding only stuck out a little. If you need clean carpet, the newest jerseys, or a slick salesperson, you might want to look elsewhere --- but if you need a set of hard-to-find RaceBlade fenders, a good lock, and someone who knows how to true a wheel, check out velogarage.

The staff are defensive (actually, make that aggressive) and unhelpful. Too busy to change a tyre,…read morebut plenty of time to take money and verbally abuse people. I had an old bicycle with a flat tyre, and was also told to wait two days for a tyre change. When I came back, I was presented with a bill for over 100 Swiss Francs. That's a *hell* of a lot of money for a flat tyre. The new tyre was around 60 Francs, but I was charged nearly 50 Francs just for the tyre change. I later went to Happy Bike on Europa Allee with exactly the same problem (different bike). Total fee: 30 Francs. 25 for a tyre, FIVE FRANCS to change it. Now Happy Bike is unusually cheap (and unusually helpful), and they are probably just trying to build up their business (and might be no good in 6 months), BUT when I took the receipt back to Velofix and questioned the outrageous bill I got a wave of bullsh*t. The head mechanic got quite aggressive, and told me that the bill was reasonable because 1) they had to pay a lot of rent and have a lot of staff 2) the global financial crises of 2008 and had really affected the sports business It was quite a barrage, and by the end of it I was a little confused 1) I have to pay a lot of rent in my apartment as well, can I please have a 50% discount? 2) What the f*ck has the global financial crises got to do with overcharging people in a bike shop? To my shame, I paid the robbers, but I'll never go back there. Stay away from Velofix.
