Onion Rings (10/10): These are actually perfect onion rings. Don't know how it could get better than this. Perfectly crispy, and the onion bites cleanly through. Fries (5/10): Fries, on the other hand, were average. Everything on the menu is really cheap. I feel like the burgers are the best deal. The hot dogs are worth trying, though. You must order the onion rings!

Initial impression can be a bit dodgy because it's super old and worn, but it really grows on you. Tiny menu but perfect for a quick old-school snack of burgers/dogs/fries. And the hard working staff is super welcoming. I usually sit right next to the door that opens/closes nonstop but I never mind. I always find myself saying "hi" to literally every stranger that walks in. It just ooozes with that increasingly rare "locals only" vibe I love so much. After half an hour sitting at the counter I start to feel like and honorary local. It reminds me of the Tasty in Harvard square I used to hang out at late night. And the total lack of posturing is a welcome and refreshing change from the fine dining world I tend to gravitate toward. A hot lunch for under $10 - WINNING! Pickup a big "Jacks hotdogs" sticker for your car- they're super cool!

The inside is homey, with a lot of little things hung around to look at. The single waitress running the lunch hour was delightful. She worked quickly and never skipped a beat. You could tell the other patrons here were regulars, since I didn't even hear them place an order, but their lunch was set down in front of them. The special board had great deals. The baskets came with fries and slaw, for $7.99. Great deal. This place is known for their hotdogs and burgers, but I wasn't in the mood for that, next time! I opted for the chicken wing wrap with no sides. It was SO fresh. It was filled with crispy chicken bites coated in a really good buffalo sauce, lettuce, tomato and blue cheese. I really enjoyed it. It being July 4th, Independence Day, I thought it would be an appropriate day to enjoy a hot dog. Just ask Joey Chestnut! I'm not going to reduce my # of *s because we really enjoyed our food and beverages. But I do have to question what I had to drink. The board said it was an Ommegang Grande Tripel stout at 5.5 ABV ($9). That level of ABV would be reasonable for a stout, but the color of the brew was golden like a typical Tripel, and not dark like the typical Stout. The bartender gave us a sample, and it was full of flavor with my wife noticing the vanilla tones that were described by the bartender. I didn't initially identify any specific flavor other than delicious and different than I would have expected from a stout. I also would not take issue with the posted 5.5 ABV. HOWEVER, a quick reference to Ommegang online as I write this says that it is a Belgium Tripel and the ABV is 9. Yes, NINE ABV! I would definitely have noticed if I were drinking a 9 ABV on an empty stomach. I also would have noticed it driving the car after finishing a pint within one hour. For those familiar with Utah Phillips, "It was good though!" But on to the food. We ordered a shareable Tot-Chos ($12.99) consisting of tater tots, tomatoes, avocado, cheese sauce, pickled jalapeños, and chipotle aioli. These were very tasty and not too spicy, with crispy on the outside and soft on the inside tots. My wife ordered the Sooo Cali ($10.99) hot dog. The black angus beef hot dog is very tasty even before it is topped with wild arugula, tomato, avocado, crispy onion strings, and spicy basil aioli. The combined flavors work well together on the Kings Hawaiian rolls. My choice was to try the Hogfather ($10.99) - a pork bratwurst with bacon chipotle onion jam, chipotle aioli, and miso ranch. The bratwurst was delicious and again, the flavors worked well together. BTW, my wife had a Grimm Nothing But Citra ($8), an IPA that even I found acceptable. We really need to return here more frequently.

Below Zero Ice Cream

One thing that immediately stood out was how confusing the ordering process was. Like most ice…read morecream stands, there are menu boards posted outside, so we naturally assumed we would order from those. Instead, the family in front of us was handed a separate paper menu from inside. We had no idea that was how ordering worked, so I had to excuse myself past the people in line just to ask for one. It would have been much more customer-friendly if menus were readily available or if there was a sign letting customers know to ask for one. I was very disappointed with my visit. I ordered a hard vanilla ice cream sundae with fudge, peanut butter, and marshmallow, and it was nowhere near worth the $9 I paid. The vanilla ice cream tasted freezer-burned, with a dry, icy texture and a noticeable "crunch" that wasn't from nuts or any toppings, but from the ice crystals in the ice cream itself. It had a stale taste, and the texture made it seem like it had been sitting in the freezer too long. On top of that, there were barely any toppings. The fudge, peanut butter, and marshmallow were so sparse that I honestly wouldn't even consider it a real sundae. For the price, I expected fresh ice cream and generous toppings. Instead, I got what felt like a cup of old ice cream with just a small amount of topping. I don't mind paying premium prices when the quality matches, but this experience was very disappointing, and I wouldn't order it again. Also, there was an older gentleman wearing suspenders who appeared to be the owner or manager. While I was waiting for my order, I watched him speaking to the young employees in a way that came across as rude and dismissive. I obviously don't know what was going on behind the scenes, but from a customer's perspective it was uncomfortable to watch and created an unwelcoming atmosphere. The way employees are treated says a lot about a business, and unfortunately it left a negative impression on me.

The small portion size was notable especially when compared to what we've come to expect at other local ice cream joints, and I'm disappointed because, who would rather have a smaller scoop of ice cream? We'll, not me. They have a few round benches across the parking lot from the shop, although some oddly have only the skeleton of an umbrella. Thankfully it was overcast when we came here most recently, so it wasn't an issue even though the only two bench seats with an umbrella were taken. Staff were reasonably friendly so service is not an issue, and I like the family vibe. Ice cream itself was fine, but I couldn't help but wish for a bit more of it.

My wife had something-berry cheesecake. The ice cream was between soft and hard, which I found odd but not bad. Perhaps it was starting to melt? They have lots of large tables with umbrellas, though our seats were very low to the ground in an awkward sort of way. Wheelchair accessible tables are available. Dogs are not permitted, so Clover got to watch from the car. I wish I had more time to read their menu to see if they had specialty sundaes and such. They had 4-5 flavors of soft serve and/or Dole whip, which is nice.
