[Review #721] 2023-007…read more I haven't been maintaining/checking my health since COVID-19 lockdown 3 years ago so I'm wayyy past due for a physical or routine check-up. One of my required exams is a retinal photo as part of the annual diabetes eye screening to examine eyes for signs of diabetic eye disease, including diabetic retinopathy, as well as other eye problems, such as glaucoma & cataracts. It was almost a month ago from the initial screening & left my PCP's office will a very long "after visit summary." Out of habit, I filed it away before my calendar alert pinged me that my follow-up appointment was coming up & I didn't complete any of the listed exams. \(`0´)/ Luckily, the retinal photo takes 10 - 15 minutes & appointments are easier to come by. Good thing was a South Bay location so I didn't have to trek up to Santa Monica, Century City, or Westwood (gulp!); I can't imagine driving that distance for this quick exam. I called UCLA Health South Bay Endocrinology & was able to get an appointment before my PCP follow-up. I initially wanted it on the hour but the receptionist said to check-in 15 minutes early, & I didn't think I could make it on time so took a 2:20 PM slot. I arrived just after 1:45 PM & could have made the earlier time; I ended up sitting in the reception area for 30+ minutes when there was no one ahead of me. (ノ__ヽ) I did get called right on the dot. The technician (think his name was Cuong?) was friendly & patient, explaining the process & what I'm suppose to do. He also assured me that the equipment was cleaned so I can confidently place my eye on the bulbous part of the scanner. It took me awhile to position myself/right eye to see the "green" light, then standing still to maintain the green light. It was faster with my left eye because I knew what I was doing. Whew! LOL Not counting the lobby wait time, I was done in under 10-mins. What is endocrinology? It's the study of hormones, which are essential for our everyday life, controlling our mood, stress, growth, temperature, sleep, etc. The doctor - endocrinologists - diagnose & treat conditions like diabetes, thyroid diseases, infertility, growth issues, metabolic disorders, osteoporosis, some cancers, & disorders in the hormone-producing adrenal glands & pituitary glands. I needed to look up endocrinology because the other facilities were aptly named diabetes or health center; I wanted to make sure I was in the right place. Other than the check-in "waiting period," it was a fast & smooth process. UCLA Health South Bay Endocrinology is located in Madison Park Medical on the 1st floor. The medical center has 2 entrances; one off PCH, which is strange since there's no street parking, & the other is on the back, entering from the parking lot. There's plenty of parking spaces on the east & west sides, with the north end mostly filled since it's closest to the entrance. The facility was open, bright, & clean. The reception area's flatscreens showed serene images but it got my 7 YO son worked up, asking a laundry list of questions about the displays. Why are there aquatic life in the flowing stream? Is that mountain that you can climb? Why don't they put on a show to entertain me? Yeesh! ;-) Still, I recommend UCLA Health South Bay Endocrinology for all your hormonal needs.

Quick version: Front office staff sucks, but Dr. Choi is worth dealing with them…read more I was having some weird symptoms so my primary doctor referred me to Dr. Choi to see if an actual endocrinologist might have better insight into my problem. I had to take off one star for the horrible front office staff. When I called to make an appointment, I was told to arrive at least 15 minutes early to fill out new patient forms, which is pretty standard. I arrived at 2:20 for my 2:45 appointment. The rude receptionist asked for my paper referral and my debit card, and nothing more. At 3:00 I asked if the doctor was running behind, since I'm now the only person who hasn't been called back. She insisted that the doctor wasn't late and that I was about to be called back, plus she snottily replied that not everyone was seeing the same doctor. By 3:15, I still hadn't been called so I went to tell the receptionist I was leaving. As I was leaving, a nurse called me back. The nurse who checked me in was wonderful! She explained that a few patients had screwed up the schedule by asking for a one-month or three-month checkup, only to show up with tons of symptoms and medical problems, thus delaying everyone. Imagine my surprise when the nurse pulled up my lab results and medical history! If your PCP is in the Torrance Memorial Physician Network, you're already in their system and no additional paperwork is needed. The nurse, who clearly had better communication skills than the receptionists, apologized for the wait and then let me know that the doctor was just finishing up with a patient and then I was next. Doctor Choi came just a few moments later and was very sweet. I get anxiety in doctor's offices, but she was friendly, personable and funny. More importantly, she is incredibly thorough. She listened to each of my symptoms, took careful notes and asked lots of questions to make sure she had the right information. She also repeated back information as she was typing. In all, we spent about an hour ruling out a few possible diseases/conditions and then she went over what types of labs she'd like to see to get a clearer picture. She was very reassuring and encouraging along the way. She even told me funny stories as she was typing to make the wait less awkward. Best of all, I am very overweight and I appreciate that she didn't bring it up or rush to blame my symptoms on my size, as many doctors have in the past (hence my anxiety). When I told her I was pursuing weight loss surgery, she said it may help the situation, but that she still wanted to be sure there were no other underlying issues. You may have to wait a little longer than planned, but Dr. Choi is worth it! Also, there is a cafe with a full Starbucks downstairs to pass the time!

My specialist told me to establish an endocrinologist when I got to Cali and he said he would work with the doctor and get them up to speed with my care. I have a rare tumor in my neck which is closely monitored and managed. I met Dr. Nguyen and told him the situation. I told him my doctor would be happy to work with him. I brought the test and bloodwork my doctor back in CT was ordering for me. My doctor in CT ordered an ultrasound but then Dr. Nguyen ordered one too right before my appt with my doctor in CT. As time went on Dr. Nguyen wasn't making money off me and wasn't the lead doctor over my care and he quickly was ready to dismiss me. He asked me what I needed him for and I told him I wanted a doctor I could go to in California as well. I told him my doctor in CT would be happy to talk with him and go over what he was doing. Well two years late Dr. Nguyen finally says he doesn't even specialize in the tumors I have, and whatever I need I can go see my specialist in CT. I told him well if I need to have surgery or a doctor to monitor and order further test or care once I return to CA he would be working with my doctor back in CT. He was very rude and nasty and was not interested in working with me. If he wasn't the lead doctor of ordering test and making money off me he didn't want to be bothered. I was in his office for a minute and a half and my insurance is being billed for nothing. Well they are paying for nasty condescending treatment. Don't waste your time. His ego is bigger than his head. I don't care to talk to any office manager. Hung left a lasting impression on me, and he's definitely not going to apologize for how he feels nor is he going to NOT charge my insurance company for the minute he took to say he didn't want to help me any further.

He also had a great sense of humor, which is very important to me. I'm a 100% disabled vet with full VA coverage but would much rather go here as I enjoy the environment, staff and the good Doctor. Fortunately, my situation is not complicated but he takes the time; end results are phenomenal. My latest visit just the other day found me in a bit of a conundrum; I needed to be seen for an Rx update. Seems with telemed diminishing, the office is popular. Appt scheduling is now long. I was on the phone with a very spunky office rep "Jasmin Hernandez" she stated I could be seen...if I could get down there in a half-hour, "hurry." Made it in 15min! She was even nice enough to pop-in after my appt to say hi and glad to see I made it. I don't believe synergistic environments like this just happen. It's a top down, all-in approach. Everyone in the office seems happy. Oh and medical asst who checked my vitals was awesome...didn't get "his" name.

When I scheduled this appointment with the office, I specifically made it for 2:30 pm, arrived at 2:24 pm to be told that my appointment was at 2 pm and I was late. The front office person was nice enough to call back to see if the doctor could still see me, they referred her to call and speak to Dr Buttan directly and when he answered she said ohhh you are in your office, explained the issue and mistake, and he flat denied to see me for the appointment. This was not my issue or an intentional lateness on my part this stemmed from whomever booked the appointment months ago. I expected if the doctor was with a patient and full schedule that no exceptions would be made but that was not the case. Then she explained that the next appointment is in 2027, when I have an urgent need to be seen this year and have already let too many months pass waiting for this appointment and booking it around my own schedule with docs I work with. What's so concerning is the human in medicine that seems to have left the building, not just on the specialist side but also the PCP side with Torrance Memorial. Doctors have their "accepting new patients" listed with no open calendar appointments to fit the new patients in when they call. The availability of doctors and specialists in the Torrance Memorial network is horrible for new patients, the experience, the dismissiveness and the ability to find quality care from doctors who care with a human side. Dr Button has no empathy for human situations and his patients.
