I am a bit late to Uber. I have been familiar with this ride app for quite some time, but never tried it out until recently. My first "attempt" was in Kuala Lumpur didn't go so well. Upon requesting for a car, I was called shortly by the driver asking that I cancel and re-submit. Making a excuse that he was too far away. Suffice to say, it turned me off to Uber. That is until I needed to find a ride back home after attending a Yelp Elite Event at Irvine Spectrum recently. Though I was apprehensive about trying Uber again, I decide to give them another chance in the spirit of the Yelp event which are meant to introduce you to new businesses. My main concern with Uber was not with the ride itself, but that I would be ripped off. I heard a lot in the news about Uber's surge pricing at peak times jacking up fares. Though upon reading more about it, I was a bit more at ease knowing that there would be a prompt on the app to indicate when Uber surge pricing was in effect. Knowing that I would have to give the okay to surge pricing before requesting a ride was a bit more comforting to me. My biggest concern with this was surge pricing being a hidden fee. Since I was a new user, I was able to use a code for my first ride. You can find these codes all over the web. There are even some listed as tips on the Yelp page for this listing. Though I went directly to the Uber site and found one for up to $22 on my first ride. After the Yelp event, I logged onto the app to request the car. The app used my phone's location services to pinpoint my location. Once it did, I looked through the options available. Unless you need more space or prefer to take a luxury car, the most economical options are UberX and UberSelect. The cheapest option being UberX. If you want to know how much your ride will cost, the app has a fare estimate feature. Just enter your current location along with the destination to get this estimate. Upon requesting the ride on the app, I was able to see the car's location and actually track as the car came towards my location. The UberX that I requested was a typical four door sedan car. After some pleasantries, the driver took me on my way to the destination. It was a quiet ride home. All in all, my Uber ride was painless. The fare was less than $22, so my ride was free even though on the receipt I noticed that we took a toll road for part of the trip. My first Uber ride turned out to be a positive experience. I see a lot of the recent negative reviews were around New Year's, so I feel like Uber is to be avoided on major holidays when surge pricing is in effect. I ordered an Uber on Monday. A car came and the driver was extremely pleasant. Unfortunately Uber sent him to the 405 freeway as the pickup address. I don't live on the 405. By the time he got to me, I no longer needed a ride. I tipped him for his trouble and went about my business. About 15 minutes later, I got an alert from Uber that my driver was on the way. Huh? Uber sent the driver to an address that begins with 16, in Westminster. My address (which is correct on the Uber app) starts with 82 in Huntington Beach. I was charged a $5.00 cancellation fee. Last night I scheduled a 3:30 am pickup for this morning to go to John Wayne Airport. Again with the wrong address. We had to drive ourselves or miss our flight. The Uber App/service is complete junk. If you try to book a ride when its busy the drivers just start passing you around to other drivers, and the app tries to pass you to the most expensive drivers. So, the $20 ride you originally booked the Uber App will try to pass you over to like a $200 ride. It's the stupidest, most confusing system, and just an absolute waste of time for the customer. There are issues with "scheduling" a ride at odd times, they don't schedule rides in advance, and with drivers not taking toll roads when it is included in the fare. I used to adore Uber. Now I try and get an Uber and I am canceled 4-5 times , wasting my time. Then I get an Uber that says 20 minutes, a long time as they have to finish their ride before coming to get me. I switch to Lyft and get a ride in 10 minutes, not several cancels. I go back into Uber and cancel the ride that is still a long way away, they charge me $5 for their inconvenience ( they hadn't even started to head my way) What about my time and inconvenience as they cancelled me 4+ times to the tune of over 5 minutes, do they give me $5 , nope. I pinged my phone the next morning to his house supposedly at 5am. I called him 10-50 more times with only 1 response, when I called my own number someone sounding a lot like him answered once. I informed the CATAC marina police like the hotel told me to do. They went to the location of the ping, but he was gone by then. This was 11am, 6 hours later. I'm still waiting on a response from Uber. I got a new phone from AT&T the same day I put in my claim. I have had 2 separate BAD incidents where Uber drivers tried to take advantage of me. The 1st is when I was overcharged for a ride for myself and 2 girlfriends. After an initial quote of $26 from Santa Ana Airport to Laguna Beach, I ended up being charge $34+ An unexplained $7.61 was charged to my trip under "Toll Rd" as well a $3.50 toll. Back and forth with Uber they could not or would not explain the $7.61 charge. The highest toll on the actual toll road is $3.50. We drove through one ($3.50 listed)! They send tax forms (1099 nec) to someone who has never driven or gotten money for an uber and when customer service gets told about a possible case of identity theft (someone using my information to get money from them) I send them my drivers license and other information but they wouldn't help unless I was using the email that the fraudulent person used to pretend to be me. Gift cards are often useful for people that don't want to divulge their credit card information to out of the country sellers like UBER. WARNING! DO NOT BUY UBER GIFT CARDS! The minimum rating I could pick is 1 star, zero stars was not an option. I bought a couple of $50 giftcards at the beginning of the year. I used the first one OK. I recently tried the second one and got an error message that the Gift Code had already been applied to someone elses UBER account. I did online cat with UBER Customer Support and they advised me that UBER doesn't refund Lost and Stolen cards. Excuse me? My card was not Lost or Stolen and I uploaded pix of my card and purchase receipt to UBER Customer Support to prove that I am the rightful owner and the card is in my possession. They asked for a screenshot of the error message that pops up when I enter the Giftcard Code and I provided the screenshot. Beats me why they need that becuase they already told me that the card was redeemed to another account and gave me the account holders first name. I suggested that they debit that person's account and reimburse me. I haven't heard back so I think they are probably ignoring me now.
