So I take an Uber after a business event last night. Wait 10 minutes for the car that says it is 3 minutes away. The driver then cancels the order and I get charged $10 for the cancellation!!! Wtf! I message Uber stating the same and they tell me they will leave me a $10 credit on my account. Again, wtf! No you scam artists, you will return my money that you essentially just stole! Uh. AMAZING. Where was this service in my fun, all night drinkin' days?!?! So my friend and I were doing the PAWSChicago 4K/8K this morning, and I couldn't bear the thought of driving to, and locating parking near, Montrose Harbor. No thanks. But getting a cab on a side street in Logan Square at 7:30AM on a Sunday is like an actual impossibility. I didn't know what the hell to do. I'd heard rumblings of über's amazingness back when they first arrived in Chicago, so I checked Yelp to see if they lived up to the hype. The reviews are ridiculously split between "how are they in business?" and "they changed my life!" which didn't exactly help. But since I had no other options, I downloaded the app and requested a black car. SEVEN MINUTES LATER, our ride was there. They'd texted me to let me know he arrived, though we were waiting outside anyway. The app is almost eerily informative, so not only can you see if there's a car around, you see a minute-by-minute countdown to your car's arrival. The driver (Alex) jumped out of the car to let us in, offered us musical selections, and asked if the temperature was right. I DARE you to find a cab driver who will stop talking on his phone long enough to even acknowledge you got in his vehicle, let alone this kind of service! He took the most logical route, and when we hit a HUGE traffic snag because of the race, he just calmly and carefully pulled over near our exit and let us out, so we wouldn't be late. Since über has your credit car # and automatically adds a tip, you can just get out and get on with your life - no driver speeding off before giving you change, no conveniently broken credit card machine. And even though I had a $10 off credit, a long, traffic-y ride from Logan Square to Montrose Harbor was only 23 dollars TOTAL. Could not be MORE worth the money. I'm not in the city or in dire need of transport too often anymore, but from now on, the times I am there, I am using über. What a fantastic solution to one of Chicago's most obnoxious necessary evils. read more

I remember when Uber wasn't as popular and the drivers we're very friendly and personable. That was the reason why I continued to use it so frequently. Now that they are growing you can tell the quality is suffering. You're lucky if you don't get a driver who is rude or condescending. There are obvious malfunctions with locaters in the app, and I'm sick of being talked down to about not placing the pin at the correct address when clearly I am standing right where I've placed it and the driver decides to park 3 blocks away. read more

I would give it zero starts if I could. Again per previous reviews, this is a Brilliant service...if only it worked. Now I understand smaller start ups and that maybe sometimes they're aren't enough taxis...I get that. I'm not writing about that. I'm in the middle of the west loop, during a weekday at approximately 3:30P The app tells me a cab is near thus I order one. It goes so far as to tell me that driver so and so is en route and picking me up...until he cancels. I got dumped by my cab driver via text message from Uber. Charming. After standing on the street corner for ten minutes, a bus arrives and I decide what the hell and hop right on. I go home (Lincoln Park), change, I have to go back to work from which I came. I'm in a serious time crunch, the CTA has two buses coming..(in 17 minutes) thus I order another Uber....which once again goes so far as to tell me driver so and so is on his way - bless him. I receive a message telling me my Uber's arriving now! Hurray! I walk outside, look up and down my one-way street and alas find no cab in sight. I wait...and wait...and would you believe it. I rode a couple times and drove a bit but it seems this company is like many others only cares about the bottom line. I referred another driver with a card they sent to me but through a glitch in the website I never saw my referral money and my friend is still driving for them so it was indeed a successful referral but they refuse to payout (400 dollars total when you consider everything they promised, 200 to sign up 50 gas card because it was in the month of June, and 150 additional once they have driven over 20 trips) They don't respond to emails and they won't credit my account. I will not use the service as a rider or driver until they rectify this legitimate claim of a referral bonus. read more

Loved Giovanni, my Uber driver. Went from the Navy Pier to O'Hare airport. He arrived quickly (there is a designated Uber pick up location centrally located at the Navy Pier), he was courteous, Nissan Rogue was clean and very comfortable. Would have had to drag my suitcase onto a bus and two trains during high travel time of day, but instead relaxed, chatted and was able to regroup getting a very very pleasant ride on a beautiful day in Chicago. read more

So I don't know why people are acting like they don't know how much it is going to cost. If it is a surge time, for example holidays and when bars let out, it will SAY 1.75% normal price. If you accept that then you should understand what you are getting into. That being said we requested Uberx to pick us up from Wrigglyville last weekend and an escalade showed up. I thought that I had made a mistake but 2 miles and 15 minutes later the fare was 6 dollars...that includes tip! Our driver then gave us his number and drove us back to Michigan Ave. to our hotel at 3 that night. If you don't want to pay premiums during premium times then get a taxi and try to stay cheaper. Overall I've never had a problem with Uber in the 4 cities I've used them in! read more

When I joined Uber, two things struck me about the model they had: the ability to use a nice affordable car service and the reliability. I became a loyal customer - probably using on average once a week or so of both taxis or town cars. Sadly the deterioration of both has now made me a former customer. The taxi app is great - when it works, and when there are taxis available. I get that you have little control over supply. But then there have been the cancellations, which i tried to overlook. So last night, I requested a taxi - not available. When I requested a black car instead, I got a notice that rates were increasing "temporarily during high demand". I am guessing the only demand was the rain and because they thought they could. So instead, I used a competitor who arrived without issue and at a lower cost. I am incredibly disappointed that they would double their prices for town cars during "high demand", which I guess is considered a rainy Sunday. This was after I signed the petition to keep them in business. I am now very much re-thinking that decision, and considering a letter to city. Simple price gouging from a company who portrays themselves as an affordable option? Shameful. Uber was a great service, but could quickly become a dying commodity in a fickle marketplace if they are going to play with their pricing at will. They had a very loyal customer in me who's now using a slightly higher priced town car option and another taxi service set at a fair reliable price. read more

I requested a ride and used the address the app automatically auto filled as I wasn't sure of the exact address of the movie theater I was at. First mistake. This address was incorrect and led to undue confusion for both the dirver and myself. When I realized the driver was lost, I called and gave him the name of the intersection. This was a very long, drawn out conversation which included me repeating the intersection cross streets at least 10 times and then having to hang up on the driver who wanted to stay on the phone while dictating his every move. My phone battery was very low and I tried to explain this, however, he didn't listen and continued to shout into my ear each street he was passing. I should have realized from this chaotic, incoherent phone call that this driver was NOT SAFE and just hailed a taxi. When the driver (older man named Nissar driving a Toyota Camry) was approaching, we were crossing the street so he wouldn't have to turn around but he ended up passing the intersection. We waved to him as he passed us and the intersection I had been shouting into his ear moments before. We watched horrified as Nissar attempted to make an abrupt u-turn into oncoming traffic, causing the oncoming driver to come to a complete stop. By this time, we had crossed the street and rushed to get into his car so that he would get his car out of the intersection and stop blocking oncoming traffic. When we got in and calmly expressed our disbelief with the stunt he had just pulled, he proceeded to YELL at us. I immediately told him to pull over. I have never felt so unsafe and probably should not have even stepped foot in his car after watching his foolish driving. I reported Nissar to Uber that night and questioned how many complaints it took before a dirver was taken off the road for unsafe driving. I was alarmed that Nissar had a 4.2 rating when he was clearly not meant to be driving people around. In the end, I received what read as an automatically generated email from Uber with a 2 question survey regarding my customer service experience. My question was never answered. For all the pleasant rides I had with Uber, it's not worth feeling so unsafe you hop out after 2 seconds with a crazy driver. Take a taxi, it's worth the extra $5 to have a driver who knows how to drive and actually knows how to get around the city. read more

I wanted to like Uber, I really did. I called for a car yesterday and when the driver saw my bag and found out I wanted to go to O'Hare he actually told me "I have to get my car back to my wife so I can't take you. I will give you a ride to the train if you want." Any regular cab that pulled that stunt would face a heavy fine for good reason. I was able to get another semi-dirty car/driver who was wiling to take me to the airport and I barely made my flight. read more

I really wish this was better. It worked beautifully the first 3 or 4 times but recently I have been having issues. Basically I request a taxi, get a text saying the taxi is "arriving now" despite there being no cab in sight and then it shows my cab leaving the area. I give up and cancel the trip and five minutes later get an email charging me $9 (cancellation fee plus a meter pull and one mile trip). So essentially these drivers just pick someone else up on my credit card and I get charged instead. Positive side - customer service got back quickly. I tried the UberX tonight instead to see if it was more reliable but the same exact thing happened. Bottom line, I won't be using this again until they iron out the kinks. read more

UBER saved my butt! I "scheduled" a cab ride days before I needed it to be pro-active and make sure I arrived at my event on time. Unfortunately the crappy taxi services never showed and when I finally contacted them they said they were an hour late.(at which point I would have arrived after my event). Uber in Chicago is a nightmare. DO NOT USE THEM. Here are my two most recent experiences: 1. Last night, I was picked up in Chicago after going dancing. The car driver who picked me up spent the car ride asking me to go to an after hours club with him. I said no. Then after he dropped me home, I saw a charge for over $100 for this car ride. My friends who came home with Uber an hour later (same trip) were only charged $25 by the Uber driver because he thought they were cute. This is normally a $60 trip with Uber. 2. Last week, I paged an Uber cab in the Gold Coast. The cab never showed. He cancelled. But Uber still charged me $5 for the ride. I used Uber in another city and it was fantastic. But in Chicago it's awful. Especially if you're a woman beware! read more

I used Uber for the second time over the weekend to send my babysitter home. I received an email that they had charged me a $200.00 "cleanup" fee on top of my $17.00 fee. I trust my sitter and she assured me that nothing was spilled and she didn't get sick. The customer service people sent me a photo and it looks like a water spill on the seat. First off, even if something was spilled, $200.00 is totally excessive. Second, I was told that the driver keeps 100% of the "cleanup fee". I suspect that perhaps the driver may have done this herself to collect the additional money.. I have disputed the charge. Unfortunately with this type of company there's no real corporate structure so in cases like this, it's their word against mine. Beware of this!!!! read more

I use Uber regularly as I live in an area where it is usually difficult to find a cab. I've used the UberX, Taxi, and Black Car services. I've used it at least 10-15 times and it's been a great service every time. Cars come fast with pictures/ratings of the drivers. You don't have to mess with tipping the driver as it's included. On two occasions I was fully refunded promptly for incorrect charges. I will continue to use it regularly. read more

I used to love Uber, but they have let me down many times lately (and have terrible service to boot). There are general problems, including that the number of taxi drivers in the program seems to have dropped dramatically. At non-peak times, I can only find a taxi available about 25% of the times I try. This used to be near 100%. Another general problem is that Uberx drivers (the company's low-cost competitor to taxis) are frequently unable to find your location to pick you up at the correct spot, and they also don't know how to get to the destinations most directly. Just last week, I needed to get a large, heavy box home from work, so I ordered an Uberx. I work at a major intersection in downtown Chicago, but that didn't stop the driver from showing up three blocks away and sending a message that my Uber had arrived. I contacted the driver to ask her to go to the correct location, but she didn't know how to get around downtown and was scared to try again. So, I instead walked several blocks with the heavy box to find her, paying the Uber time charge the entire time, and completely ruining the point of using the Uber app in the first place. Then yesterday, I used Uber to request a taxi. When I exited, the meter showed $9.25 (and there were no charges for things like tolls or additional passengers). When I received my receipt, though, I was billed as if the meter said $10.85. I contacted Uber immediately, but they refused to issue a credit. Like everything in life, your mileage may vary. For me, I consider myself lucky that I am getting away from them with pricing errors of only a couple bucks each time. Reading other reviews now, I see that it could have been much worse. read more

I had a horrible first (and last) experience using Uber. The instructions for new users say that you can reserve a car by texting the pick up address to their number. Since they don't accept reservations in advance and say to give 5-10 minutes for the car to arrive, I wait to text until 15 minutes before I need the car to arrive. I get a reply saying that they don't accept texts anymore (even though it says it right on the website) and that I need to download the app. It took 18 minutes for the app to download and for me to enter a new request so all the extra time I built in for the car was gone and I was late for my appointment. It would have been easier, quicker, and cheaper to use a regular cab. read more

This company is horrible. The customers for Uber Pool is Godawful and the fares have dropped so much that us drivers get any money. I'm not sure why they still have that rating system but none of the customers are informed that a 4.6 or below gets their account deactivated. I really hope people stop using Uber. read more

As a driver service it is great, Uber customers get to ride in private cars and get a private driver for less that the cost of a taxi and much less than the cost of owning their own car. For the Uber drivers, it is a scam!!!!! In most cities they dropped their cut from 20% to 5% so the drivers could make a living wage, BUT NOT IN CHICAGOLAND!!!!! They promote making $20 per hour, but after their expenses, you might average $10. My husband actually grossed $11.21, but after you pay for gas, maintenance, insurance, etc. he ended up making well under the required minimum wage. They also sent him almost 50 texts over the promising to make a lot of money but it did not materialize. Be careful here folks, you could make more money and beat your car up less in a fast food position. read more

I have been a huge Uber fan since moving to Chicago. Normally, I have minimal to no complaints. However, this morning, the uber I requested picked up someone else (not confirming it was me). Whoever he picked up, took a $53.00 cab ride to the airport that I now have to pay for. There is no customer support phone number, which is EXTREMELY frustrating. Instead of an actual person resolving the issue in 5 minutes, I will have to wait who knows how long for an email response. When Uber first came to Chicago, I thought it was a neat idea, and the first few times I utilized them it was an ok experience. However, over time their service and pricing has become suspect. In regards to pricing, Uber advertises that the Uber X fares are 28% less than a normal taxi. What they fail to mention is that during popular times such as before and after work, Friday evenings (the times when people actually use cabs), they apply these huge surcharges. The highest I have seen was five times. For example, I had a 2 mile cab ride on a Friday evening cost me $35! Now for the drivers.... It seems as if it always turns into a hassle. My biggest pet peeve is when you cancel on you after you have been waiting. You then have to start the process all over again after wasting 10 to 15 minutes. Also, even though you type in your exact address on the app, they always seem to end up a block or 2 away. They then call you and asks if you can walk over to them. Came into Chicago O'hare around midnight. Checked the Uber app to see how much a ride from the airport would be. $58 or $43 so I decided to take CTA. While on the Blue Line, received a call from an Uber driver informing me he was at the airport to pick me up. Told him I did not request uber. He said ok and disconnected the call. 20 minutes later received an email for a $43.35 charge to my credit card. Contacted uber and told them I did not request or use them. Was told I was picked up and dropped off by Tony and could not get a refund. Contacted my credit card company. NEVER using uber again! read more
