My relationship with Uber is likely to be similar to the one that you had with the stupidly hot guy/girl you dated in college, who looked a lot like a supermodel but had the personality of a brick wall and treated you like dog shit. You kept coming back for more, even though you weren't sure why. As a technological IDEA, Uber is worth 5 stars. As a technological PRODUCT, Uber is worth -5289 stars. Let me explain. In its perfect form, Uber connects friendly drivers who are looking to make an extra few bucks using their personal vehicles with folks such as yourself, looking for a ride somewhere. The problems start to arise when individual people get involved (and unfortunately, people do have to get involved). 1. Drivers are absolutely not screened properly. Without exaggeration, I have had 6 drivers inform me about the very lax security standards for Uber. As a result, you end up with drivers who have committed multiple felonies previously, including driving offenses. A simple Google search will pull up news stories from across the world describing this issue. Yes, 80% of Uber drivers are normal human beings. But what happens when you get into the car with the other 20%? I have had drivers drive so recklessly that I prayed to Clay Aiken - yes, that bad. He went up on sidewalks (with people walking there) and everything. 2. Drivers are out to make money. I know that sounds obvious, but hear me out. Many Uber drivers are now independent business operators (their car is their business) for the first time in their life. For some, all they know is to try every second to hustle for money. Your money. Ask veteran Uber customers how many times they have had rides canceled by the driver just before a surge price started (personally: 3 times, including after a busy concert, and during a recent snowstorm). Drivers often have the Uber customer app running on their personal phone to see where surges occur, and will cancel rides on you if they think they can pocket more money elsewhere. 3. Uber fucks drivers up the asshole so hard that you wonder if this is just a really bad porno. uberX drivers in Boston are paid $1.20/mile. The IRS reimburses you 57.5 cents/mile for business-related travel to cover gas/insurance/depreciation costs. Which means the Uber driver is making about 60 cents/mile. A ride from downtown Boston to Gillette Stadium nets the driver about $15 after expenses. Would you drive your buddy to a Pats game for $15? If you said yes to that question, then you can be my personal chauffeur next NFL season. So with all of these negative points, why is Uber worth 2 stars, and not 1? Because there is something admittedly convenient about just ordering a ride with the touch of a button. I had a great relationship with Uber until my Uber account was hacked. On 12/24/2018, I tried to use my debit card which had over $1000 in funds to buy a meal at McDonald's and it was declined for some reason. So I called the bank back and they asked me did I attempt to take a $270 Uber trip, and I said No emphatically. My bank informed me that they suspected such and declined that payment but locked my account in the process. So My Uber account was hacked. So I called up Uber to reset my password. They gave me instructions to reset my password. But I couldn't log on to my account. When I told Uber, they responded that because since there was a "terms of service" violation, they could not reinstate my account. I asked for an explanation because I was never informed about any violation. They never responded with ANY detail about what the issue was. I have tried to send several e-mail and tweets with no luck because they don't have a support rep that you can reach via telephone. This is the worse service ever. I called to get a ride to Boston airport. Was first quoted 20 dollars an by the time I accepted and booked the ride for first thing in the morning. It jumped to 24 dollars and accepted. First bad taste for this service The I could see the driver driving around on the map so started walking towards her (with luggage in tote). By the time I find her she has cancelled her call and tells me to rebook so she can get it back. When I do this, it says I will be charged 5.00 cancellation fee! Then the new price jumps to 37.00!!! This was a 8 mile ride to the airport!!! Airport shuttle only charged me 19 to get to the hotel!! Total ripoff and price gouging. I never felt so alone and used in my life!! Worst experience I've ever had. I got charged a cleaning fee of $80. Looked at their policy and it said that would be an extensive mess, vomit etc., that required detailing. My friends and I were in the car for 10 minutes and the only potential mess could have been ice. When given pictures it looked like ice stains that would inevitably dry. When I complained the driver complained we had an open container and we were in violation of the guidelines for Uber. The only container was a seltzer bottle in my hand. When I asked for the reports, receipts of cleaning/detailing, I received generic responses from Uber. They started charging me monthly for some "Pass" I had never heard of, got within a million miles of signing up for, or used (I used Uber about twice a year) and when I noticed it, after four months of $24.99 charges, they would only refund me for one of the months. They did not deny that they had done it, they just chose to keep $75. And a Google search reveals that they do this a lot. AVOID UBER. THEY STEAL FROM THEIR CUSTOMER'S BANK ACCOUNTS.
