Uber is a cab company which operates purely via a smartphone app. It still blows my mind that you can now order food, buy clothes and now order a taxi through a phone... But I digress. I first came across Uber in London. I was in Baker Street for a work conference and my colleague offered to order us a cab. I didn't see him pick up the phone and make a call, but before I could question this a taxi pulled up and knew exactly where we were going. "Wow", I thought "When are we going to get this service in Birmingham?". I signed up using a discount code (for a free ride) and off we popped to our destination. Our driver even had bottles of water and sweet on board for us! I have since used Uber in London, San Fran, Dublin and now Birmingham. I absolutely love this service. You grab your phone, get on the app, state your destination (you can get a fare quote beforehand if you wish) and it then gives you the details of how long the driver will be (you can also see them on a map), who the driver is and the make and reg of the car picking you up. Due to the cab being pre-booked, you are insured for the journey too and it's all recorded (making it a safe choice). As well as being reliable (and getting updates of the ETA of your driver in real time), the cabs I have taken in Birmingham have been consistently cheaper than other cab companies. A journey from the Jewellery Quarter to the Prince Of Wales set me back just over £6 last week (whereas it would normally be £8 - £10 with other companies). The drivers have always been exceptionally friendly and polite. The fact they are all tracked but use satnav also means I haven't ever been "taken around the houses" or charged unfairly too. If you haven't joined the Uber revolution yet, give it a go. There are a ton of discount codes online for you to give them a go for free... I used uber for the first time last night and I was skeptical at first but wow this is awesome. Quickly downloaded took about 5 minutes to verify and register. So I pin pointed my location which comes up automatic. Pop my destination in which is home and is already saved as an address so if you tispy or drunk after a night out u can do it with ease. Once a taxi has been requested it show how far your taxi is away in minutes and also shows u a little car on the Map, which is your taxi tracked by GPS. I was blown away at how easy and Uber cool it is to use! No more waiting around for private hires or expensive black cabs. I went from the city to Harborne on a Sunday morning around 1am for £12.00. That's very good going. I felt safe and in good hands the driver was friendly and even waited for me as I said goodbye to my friends. Most other would pick someone else up. He made sure he verified who I was and that I was the one who had ordered the taxi. Looking forward to requesting my next uber. :) read more

Easy to use, reasonably priced and always arrives on time. UBER really is the future of getting around town. For anyone that has not used it before I recommend you download this app today! You register your card and can order a taxi with GPS telling the driver where you are. When you get out of the cab your card is charged rather than you needing to go to the cash point on the way and you are told how much your taxi was with a message. So simple! Gone are the days of being ripped off by drivers waiting outside clubs charging you three or four times the amount you normally pay because its late.....big thanks to UBER for sorting out a serious issue in a lot of cities and making the whole taxi experience more transparent. read more

I've been using uber around the world for about two years now. When I came home to Birmingham a few months back and realised it was there too, I was over the moon. Great service, quick to arrive in the city centre, nice drivers (their jobs are sort of dictated by your rating, so to be honest they have to be). Be aware of surge pricing at busy times, but it's clearly stated so you know what you're getting in for. Would like a few more drivers in south Brum, but it's always my choice in town. read more

I had heard a lot about UBER, good and bad. I signed up for it in April with a friends promo code so we both got £10 on an Uber ride. The closest place I live that has an Uber service is Birmingham but I tend to walk or get a train to wherever I need to go even though I had this free trip. But last night I was in a part of the jewellery quarter that I didn't know, got lost getting to in the day time and so was not about to wander off into the night. I found some phone signal and requested a car, due to the time it was at 1.5 surge pricing but still well within my £10 freebie. The driver arrived in less than the 3 minute ETA and even though I had requested the regular Uber came in a people carrier so the Uber XL must be like a van or some sort of urban tank. The car was clean, driver pleasant and took me to the drop off point at New Street station. He didn't take the route that the phone was suggesting but with all the road works around everywhere it was probably the best idea. Journey from Henrietta Street to New Street station at 22:15 ish at night cost me around £6 with the surge pricing. One thing I have noticed though which is why it doesn't get full stars is sometimes I can be in the same location as someone else with Uber and my app is showing no cars available whilst theres has loads or vice versa. I agree thats more to do with the app and not Uber Birmingham but since its a requirement its a little inconvienent. read more

OK, this is based on just one trip but it was a great trip and deserves a solid 5***** review. The whole app thing was pretty easy and I could see the cab arriving so was out to meet it. I like that you can see what the payment is going to be before confirming the booking. The driver was a nice guy and we had a good chat all about his side of the whole Uber thing. He was impressed with everything about it and felt better off; he really sold it to me after my own doubts. Of course, the PITA will come if the whole auto and app things falls over, i.e. as someone else mentioned when there's a no show and the money is taken anyway! As it was my trip from the JQ to New Street was around £1.50 cheaper than my usual go to cab co. I'll use them again. I used a free credit code so it was actually a free trip. Next time I'll be happy to pay. read more

Well, I just keep growing fonder and fonder of Uber. It just works really well and when something goes wrong they rectify it straight away. I've been using Uber for a couple of months now and it's just so much better than a normal cab now. The way it works is simple, download an app on your smartphone, register your card details on it, order a cab and watch it arrive on the map. You know how long its going to be and a rough price of how much too. The best things I have found so far are, you know where the cab is, no more "it's just around the corner" lies. You don't have to sort that all annoying change out at the end as its charged straight to your card. The metering is fair across the board as its measured on where you go via the map. The drivers are out to perform as well because there is a rating system in place where you can rate each driver after each ride. A couple of weeks ago I had a problem where the taxi driver took a ridiculously long route. Now, i wasn't unfair with this cause there is a massive amount of road works going on in Birmingham at the moment BUT after missing a turn I suggested it meant he could only take a huge detour and this turned what normally is a £3.50 journey that I have taken before (with roadworks in place) into a £5.70 journey. Straight away I gave the driver 1 star and put my reasoning in the comments. I wasn't really expecting a response as such but within half an hour of me doing that, I received an email telling me that they reviewed the route that the driver took and they agreed it was unneccesary. This meant that they recredited my account with the difference making it back into a £3.50 ride. I was really impressed. A great little addition as well and powerful towards their marketing is that if you recommend it to someone and share a code, they get free £10 worth of taxis and if they use your code, you do as well! Bonus! Uber have impressed me time and time again since it started up here in Birmingham and I will be continuing to use them for the foreseeable future. Fully prepared to give them full marks as I have yet to find a fault, well one that they haven't rectified either. read more

Best app on my phone. Only requires few clicks to call a taxi. I always found it difficult to call taxi when i did not where I was. With this app it is very easy as it locates where you are and then you can call the taxi at your location. It also lets you save two locations as home and work which makes calling a taxi faster. I give uber 1 star, but if I had the option to give them nothing I would. First time ever using them and I agree a fee of £68 which included a surge charge of x2.0 but when I check my card statement the next morning they added on an extra £20 charging me £88. Despite making several complaints they now insist the fee is correct even though on my first complaint they advised me that the £88 was a holding fee and I would not be charged that amount. £68 for a ride that should have only cost £34 is bad enough but to then add on an extra £20 for no apparent reason is totally outrageous and the driver didn't even have to drop us to my home destination as my car was closer so just asked him to drop us to my car instead. I will NEVER use uber again and would advise everyone on here, bar those supporting uber who must be affiliated in some way, to boycott this firm and put them out of business in the UK. Lets start giving our local firms who don't rip us off our support. Get lost uber. Definitely something dodgy about this site too, why is it only the positive reviews about uber are visible and the negative reviews hidden?? read more

Quite simply the most unreliable taxi service Ive EVER used. Left the Barclaycard Arena on Saturday night and used the App, all booked an said it would be 4 minutes A minute later got a text saying there's been a mix up, another minute later text saying unfortunately had to cancel trip and please re-book Having 2 small children with me had no alternative so re-booked. This time 8 minutes ETA, at 8th minute, saw the taxi that had ordered and literally chased it down the road but it drove off because it couldn't pull in. Another text saying had to cancel. This happened 2 more times until the taxi we ordered finally turned up at the exact moment I had yet ANOTHER text saying that unfortunately had to cancel. As he was there we started getting in the cab, the driver said he couldn't take us as he had cancelled, I argued that he had literally just cancelled that second and he said regardless, its cancelled Two young children crying, I insisted he get his head office on the radio. He refused and said he couldn't get there so trip cancelled end of. There is NO customer service, its all about meeting timescale targets, if they don't look like they are going to meet them, they cancel at the very last second and pick someone up that has just ordered. Im taking this further and making an official complaint as there was no empathy to the fact I had ordered five times and Uber had cancelled leaving me stranded with small children crying on the road.
