This gym is in my opinion very nice. I they have a good amount of machines in multiples (like treadmills, ellipticals etc etc) and most of them stay working and if they aren't they get fixed roughly within 1.5 weeks. I will say their high traffic time is any time after 5. But mornings and afternoons aren't bad (assuming most people have classes during those times). Multiple basketball courts, indoor pool (but unfortunately only goes to 4 feet) and so much more. Definitely would recommend. *can't speak to the gym membership prices as I am a student here and don't know nothing bout that lifestyle read more

This is definitely a gem of UAB! I love how big the space is. They have a huge pool and jacuzzi, rock climbing wall, dance studios, an indoor track, racquetball courts, basketball courts, and their new functional fitness room! They always have new equipment like the new squat racks, but they still have lots of old machines that need some fixing. Last time, only two out of the four stair masters were working. They also have F45 classes, which are so much more affordable compared to F45 classes outside of the rec. The F45 instructors give great attention to everyone and motivate you to keep doing your best! read more

Why isn't the stay friendly? Like, at all??? The swim guards appear to be rude and unfriendly as and the front desk staff are simply uninterested. This is the LEAST warm or reception group of people within in gym or recreational center we've ever encountered. read more

Best gym for UAB students and/or employees! Everything is great and well worth the money! Great aquatics center (although they need a "deep" section), expansive and clean weight and cardio rooms, great F45 classes, and great yoga (Shawn's yoga is the way to go). Deducted a star for locker/shower room floors never being cleaned. Visibly dirty (especially the mats). Definitely recommend bringing flip flops if you plan to shower there. read more

I've been coming here on and off for the last 12 years. They always manage to keep this place looking new with renovations. It really was voted as one of the best recreation centers for college campuses. They have all kinds of machines, a weight room, a pool, indoor track, several gymnasiums, and my favorite part is definitely the fitness classes they offer. The women's locker room has several showers (not always the cleanest though) and a nice sauna. They offer a complimentary towel service that you used to have to buy a towel card for. If you don't want to purchase a locker, you can bring your own lock and keep you stuff their for a few hours which is what I do. They also have a small store up front where you can buy food, socks, earbuds, etc. Anywhere you park, will be a bit of a challenge, but there are parking decks and lots all around UAB if you know where to look. Membership can be pricey, even with my alumni status, but if you like to work out, this is a great place for you! read more

A pearl of UAB! Splendid facility with literally everything you need for your workout... and fun. I couldn't believe they even had a climbing wall. I thought climbing was going to be off by moving here in town, but I was wrong. It's just a single wide wall but still... you can climb and they offer belaying. Plenty of space, plenty of courts for any sport, plus a beautiful inner loop where to warm up running before your workout. Swimming pool doesn't have so may lanes but it's a great feature of the gym as well. Super cool and CLEAN facility, and the staff (while often not that useful) is super friendly and respectful. Good job guys I'm only disappointed for the use in the gym of tons of polluting detergent by every person to clean up the machines. I've never seen such a policy anywhere else in the world. A towel put on the machine seat while you use it would be enough. The problem seems cultural here, not of this particular place. People don't care so much on environmental sustainability. If you have access to this place, GO! Massive facility with something for everyone. Two weight rooms, huge indoor track, racquetball courts, basketball courts, indoor pool (that's right, swim in January), and a full locker room to shower and change afterwards. I'm deducting a star for the lack of nearby free parking. If it's raining, you're getting wet. If it's freezing, you'll be walking at least a block or two in the cold. There is a paid lot basically next door, but if you go regularly, these costs can add up quickly. read more

They have great group classes. My favorite zumba teacher just moved away, but the rest of them are pretty great! The other classes range from step aerobics to 'hardcore' and spin classes. There is a big rock wall that has been calling my name, so I'll have to update my post once I try it out. The pool is pretty sweet. There is an area to swim laps, a whirlpool that tiny children like to pretend they're trapped in, and a huge hot tub. It's usually pretty chill in there, but Sunday afternoons seem to be the time for childhood birthday parties, so don't expect to relax in the hot tub then. There is an indoor running track as well as countless treadmills and various cardio equipment. Free weights are abundant on 2 separate floors, but it does get quite crowded after people get off work. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the parking. The parking lot across the street is only 'open' for the Rec Center after 4pm on weekdays, so, if you want to do a noon zumba class, you are supposed to find street parking. That being said, they are doing construction in that parking lot right now, so there is no gate keeping you out at specific times. So far, I have not gotten a ticket for parking there midday, but we shall see how long that lasts. read more

Love having the racquetball courts to warm up on or play an all - out game. Like this rec more than the one in Tuscaloosa, mainly due to more duplicates of machines. That, and it's not as slammed during peak hours on average. Use the hot tub sometimes, especially when it's cold! read more

Apart from having an amazing facility, the front desk staff is a little weird and rude. Today I went in the facility to renew my Alumn membership. As i regularly do, I checked into Yelp and went to snap a picture. As soon as aimed my phone towards the entrance a young lady asked me not to take a picture of the gym. Thinking she must have been joking, I held up my phone again and was informed by the same lady that people aren't allowed to take any pictures inside the gym. Really? Now I can understand not taking pictures in private areas or in the pool area, but at the entrance? By the young ladies serious look, I was a bit stunned and put my phone away. Is this really UAB rec center policy? If so, should Yelp delete my older picture and of the other Yelpers. Had a few explicatives that came to mind when I realized she was serious, but I simply turned around and walked out. Not sure if I'm coming back, or giving any other donations. What a great facility. New. Clean. Functional. And great staff. Free weights. Basketball courts. Racquetball. Swimming. A lazy river! A lazy river INDOORS at a campus! This is unheard of. The UAB Campus Rec Center is one of the best "smaller" Rec centers I have been to. The Rec is located at the heart of the campus and easy to access. Plenty of parking around the perimeter. As you walk in the doors you notice a clean and organized environment. I have been to Rec center at various times morning and night and have always been able to find a place to run and use the equipment I desire, no waiting times. Also, they're are a variety of classes and training sessions provided. In addition, in comparison to other gyms in the area, they have cleaning solution conveniently located close to most machine to clean up after a hard workout. Also, the locker rooms are clean and have plenty of lockers available for use. The staff is friendly and knowledgable. Overall, compared to other campus Rec centers, this one is far superior in the fact that it is extremely clean, organized, variety of equipment, and not crowded. read more

While visiting the Rec Center with a UAB professor over the Christmas Holidays, four of us sat in the whirlpool and were chatting and laughing. After a few minutes, a lifeguard walked over and stated that my friend and her boyfriend were sitting too close. When asked what he meant by that, he detailed a story about a previous couple that had made out in the whirlpool and that the Rec Center was a family environment. There was absolutely zero inappropriate behavior in the whirlpool by any of us. Upon leaving the area, we asked the lifeguard for his name and he became combattive and only agreed to give his name after another staff member came over. We asked if he planned to go over to another couple that was currently sitting next to each other in the whirlpool. He said that he did not and that they were not exhibiting potentially inappropriate behavior. From his vantage point across the entire pool area, he would have been unable to see any thing of the sort regardless. It was abundantly clear by his tone and body language that he had more of problem with my friend's interracial relationship than any perceived behavior. Before leaving the building, each of us wrote a detailed report and submitted it to the assistant manager who stated that they would follow-up and contact us. No contact has been made to-date. As an insult to injury, this rude and unprofessional employee received Employee of the Month for December at the Rec Center. It is unfortunate that these types of individuals not only maintain employment at the University, but are honored with such egregious behavior. read more

Not quite 5-star yet This past Wed. night, parking at this establishment was particularly poor, and I had previously been informed by an associate (similar to what I see on this site, now), that the 9th Ave parking deck was available for parking and that your ticket would be validated. I ,therefore, parked at such parking deck, and upon requesting the validation of my ticket when leaving the unusually-crowded gym, I was told that validation is only possible before 4 pm. The manager, Adam, very "astutely" informed me that this information is visible at the parking garage itself (I'm still currently wondering where), and nothing could be done for me, as they understand that parking is a problem. I would have certainly appreciated being informed of all the exclusions and exceptions related to parking, instead of receiving partially-disclosed information when I confirmed my membership here. Further, the fact that "nothing could be done" is somewhat stunning to me. Am I to presume this is the expected treatment when dealing with a facility that caters to and is staffed by mainly college students? Not that one person's membership matters any to the facility itself, but I will certainly be taking my patronage elsewhere. On a positive note, the facility is quite clean, well-equipped, large, and the equipment itself is in excellent condition. Customer service and parking are the main items that, personally, I feel could use improvement and thus, the lack of a 5-star rating.
