Most everything about the experience with ABF was positive. My fiancé and I relocated in January from California to Wisconsin (I know, I know). Months ahead, after narrowing our search for moving companies, we contacted ABF, finding them friendly and reasonably priced. Any person would arrive at similar questions as we had: What if we don't use the whole shipping trailer? How long do I have to load unload? Is the price fixed, or will it go up if gas/oil rates climb nearing our move? Firstly, they quote you a price that is based on your expected usage of their 28' trailer. What you don't use or what you go over, is a plus/minus $88 per foot. We were quoted as needed 23' of trailer space, but ended up needing only 13', so we saved $880 just by packing smart. They dropped of the trailer on time, at a reasonable time of day, say 10 a.m., and had called me to let me know the driver was on his way. After dropping, I was allowed to keep the trailer as long as I needed, and was asked just to call them when it was ready. I kept it over the weekend, from Friday to Tuesday, called them Monday to schedule the pick-up the following day. Again, they called when the driver was on his way, and picked it up on time. I hadn't quite been finished, and the driver was friendly enough to allow me an extra 30 minutes while he had waited. Despite a very heavy load: garage full of tools and toys, music gear, solid wood bedrooms sets and so on, the weight is a non-issue to them, so you're not charged for anything extra in that regards. They fix the price, but in your favor, so if gas goes up from the day you were quoted, you don't pay more... but you're rate is actually lower if gas goes down. I thought that was a stand-up deal. My fiancé and I chose to take 2 full weeks touring the country while ABF hauled the load to WI. They gave us 4 days of free storage at their terminal, where weekends and the move-in day don't count against you, and asked me to call when I was ready to have it delivered. They dropped it off on time, where I used it for 3 days, called them, and had them pick it up again. Billing was exactly what we thought it would be after subtracting our space saving discount, and everything in the trailer was left in place from where I had strapped it in. Not bad for 2500 miles. They give you a set of bulkheads to lock up your items where only you have the key, and have access to it. The only negative is their skimpy insurance... heaven forbid the driver loses control and damages your truck. You'll only get pennies on the dollar for your items inside. Otherwise, everything worked out so wonderfully! read more
