I wish I would have read the reviews on Yelp before choosing this U-Haul location for my service. I wanted a hitch put on my vehicle, I picked out the one I wanted and set up an appointment all via the internet. The service was ok once someone was able to help me. They were pleasant but not overly happy to see me as a customer. The install was about the amount of time I expected so I did not have to keep busy for too long. They called my mobile phone when it was complete which was nice. As it was raining I was in a hurry to inspect, pay and leave. In my haste I failed to request the cover that was on the back of my vehicle which they need to remove. I called the location back within 15 minutes and they were able to find my part. You would think they would have put all extra parts in my trunk or somewhere in my vehicle. They said they would put my name on it and put it behind the counter. I do not get out this way much so it took me just over two weeks to get back to this location. When I did I was informed by the manager (Blake Winder) that the part was thrown away and there was nothing they could do. Needless to say I was upset that they felt a part to my vehicle was useless and they decided not to notify me that they would dispose of it if I did not show up. I sure hope they do not treat all their customers as if their stuff is not important. read more

I rented a small truck on July 25. The gas tank was 3/4 full. I added nearly 5 gallons of gas after driving about 60 miles. When i retuned it, the tank was MORE full than when I got. But they charged me $15 fir 3 gallons of gas. I tried via email four times to get resolution. I have not yet heard back. It was only $15 but I'm upset at being ripped off. It's poor customer service! I returned it with MORE gas than when I picked it up, and yet they charged me for gas. (Everything else was fine, but I'm upset by the cheating.) read more

AVOID THIS U-HAUL LOCATION! Terrible experience at this location, I wouldn't recommend it to anybody & would actually encourage them to avoid this location. Went to this location in-person in mid-June to set reservation for U-Box for last weekend of July. When I called yesterday 7/21 to ask a question about what I thought was my reservation I was then notified that the employee forgot to actually book my reservation & only gave me a quote. Their "solution" to the problem was to now drive 40 mins to CR & pay a higher fee for the U-Box. Totally unprofessional & a joke of an operation at this location. read more

They have gotten better after my previous reviews on google and yelp I would consider the worst customer experience, TWICE in a row. The location(or uhaul.com) rectified their first mistake by sending me a 50$ gift certificate. Which I wanted to use it within a month, but even after providing them with the certificate# (they didn't had a place to enter the certificate#) so asked him to enter the certificates in the remarks as the person helping me get the reservation entered in the CRAPPY SYStem & wasting good amount of time arguing about the money, which I am being charged with store manager. who was claiming that my calls my messages didn't reach him after calling like 3times. first time on 30th august (the 800#) - the lady was super rude, literally shouted I CANT HELP YOU, until your reservation is closed, I was like I understand. Then the next day after the reservation was closed, apparently the lady never asked store manager to call me. then 3rd time on 31st spoke to the lady in store, who was sweet asked her to transfer my call to Blake & she transferred me to customer service which after holding for more than 1/2 n hr I gave up. Then finally at 4th time, I spoke to Blake (the store manager) after telling him n arguing with him he said he can't do anything about this. Now I as a customer wasted more time in transfers n argument & at the end I was the loser because I dealing with an age old system who can't even Authorize a store manager to reverse a transaction to help his customer out. I felt dumb where I was paying because someone forgot to inform store manager or he avoided the email or just crappy business process. And also, a comment to store manager - there is always a way to fix things. Just saying I apologize doesn't help. Reserved a rental nearly 2 weeks ago, got a call 24 hours before my rental telling me that it is not available and nothing they can do about it because "Im not the only one moving", which I am fully aware of, but hence why I was proactive and booked this in advance. Instead of my original 24 hour rental request I now have a 2 hour window just hours before I have to be moved. They tried to suggest I pay for two separate rentals for each day. No empathy, no attempt to amend. Will never go through this location again. read more

If I could leave 0 stars here, I would. I visited multiple times to try and sort out options for an out of state move. This place made an already stressful life event even more difficult. I created a towing plan & made reservations with one person only to return and be told it wasn't possible with my vehicle. I had to rearrange my entire plan, later to find out that the original could have worked. They insisted I was trying to tow the largest trailer when I had never asked for this. Horrific Experience Which Cost Me an Extra $2,180 Please do not make the mistake I did and hire Uhaul to ship your belonging across the country. Here is the shortened version: - My Uhaul box was 9 days late - I was left stranded in LA for 9 days and had to pay $2,180 for a hotel + food + empty apartment + work clothes. - I was lied to by multiple people - Talked down to and belittled over the phone - Ignored by at least 10 employees - Was told over the phone by the manager at a customer service center that she didn't care that my Uhaul box was 9 days late. It wasn't her problem. I hope this never happens to anyone else again but unfortunately THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. I have read so many bad reviews about Uhaul and their terrible treatment of their customers needs to stop. Supposedly their phone calls are recorded so UHAUL go back and listen to how your employees treated me over the phone. There are over 20 phone calls so just pick a couple and listen to how your employees dismissed and talked down to me. I am reporting Uhaul to the Better Business Bureau. read more

This U-Haul location has changed the face of U-Haul for me. My experience walking into their store and talking with their employees has been night and day difference compared to the general on call representatives I get on the phone/live chat from Uhaul's website. I'm especially grateful for Danny, who was the only one who could answer my questions and help me with my move. He has been especially gracious and has put the customer first. If I hadn't walked in and experienced this location's customer service, I'm sure I would have gone with a different moving company! Thank you to those employees who make a difference! read more

They didn't have the propane service running for 2 weeks, then wouldn't fill my tank because it wasn't certified to their exact specifications, even though I had gone to America's to decertify. Unless you have a new tank, stick to Lowe's or the gas stations for your propane. read more

*I'm writing this review about this particular U-Haul location, not about U-Haul nationally, nor about do-it-yourself moving rental companies. The complaints others have written about here are standard fare for do-it-yourself moving companies. My review: I've used this location several times and everything has gone fine (relative to how things go at other locations for this company and at locations for other do-it-yourself moving companies.) Recently, after I had trouble reserving U-Boxes through the U-Haul website and U-Haul phone customer support, I went in and talked things over with Blake. He was extremely helpful and professional. He got everything set up for us and explained what all the charges were, when we needed to pick things up and drop them off, etc. It was clear that he knew what he was talking about, which is always a relief when you're working on something as important and stressful as moving across the country. On pick-up day--during the last week of July, when this U-Haul location is always slammed because leases in the area start on August 1--there was, understandably, a huge line. There was initially some confusion about how to check out the three U-Boxes I needed. Then Dakota stepped in and fixed everything, and I was able to get the boxes I reserved to where I needed them to be. Thanks to him, what could have been a trying exchange went great. read more

My hitch installation appointment was scheduled online for a time/date during which this location was not even open for business. Nobody called me to let me know about the mishap. Luckily, the evening before my hitch installation appointment, I called to confirm the appointment, only to discover that this particular U-Haul would not be open for my 7 AM Sunday appointment. To make matters worse, the hitch installation was supposed to take two to three hours. I dropped my car off at 10 AM, had to wait half an hour simply to see an employee because there was a long line with only one person working. The installation wasn't done until 4:30 PM. Two to three hours? Just be honest with your customers; if it's going to take all day, tell them that it's going to take all day so that they don't make plans. Moving is hectic and stressful enough. To make matters EVEN WORSE, the employee gave me the wrong class hitch attachment. The mechanic installed a class 1 hitch and the employee sold me a class 2 hitch. What am I going to do with a hitch and ball mount that doesn't even fit the hitch that YOU JUST INSTALLED? I didn't even bother to return it because I knew that visiting this particular U-Haul store would result in having to wait for over half an hour. read more

All I can say is thank god for Iowans! If you don't know, Iowans will give a stranger the shirt off their back. That's the kind of people they are. We just got put in a terrible situation an hour before we were going to move by another location, and was notified that our truck had mechanical issues, and they sent us to Coralville to get a smaller truck and a trailer. This Coralville location let us take one of their local trucks in the size we originally reserved, and said they would just come pick it up from our new place later. They were incredibly nice and accommodating and most certainly did not have to let us take a local truck. Thank you! read more

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. After renting from this place 3 times, you can call me insane. Terrible service, terrible trucks, and ridiculously overpriced. They would charge you for seatbelts if they could. I've had trucks here that didn't have a functioning gas gauge, radio, or air conditioning. Not great for long moves in the summer. Go Penske or Ryder. Save yourself the headache. read more

DO NOT COME HERE! Reserved online for a 10' truck for 24 hours, went to pick it up at 630 pm, the contract says it is due next day 945 AM. Asked why, the staff says it's just a computer glitch, it does that all the time and the truck is actually due 630 pm. I asked him to correct it to avoid any misunderstanding, he said he can't and it is fine. Took his word for it and next thing you know is a addition fee for the second day when returning it. I ordered a dolly online to help with the move, they didn't put it in the truck and I've called a few times with no refund. 1. I set up my appointment to have a trailer hitch and wiring installed on 4-21 for a time on 4-22. On 4-22 they called me and cancelled the appointment because they were understaffed and could not complete the work. (I adjusted my work schedule for this appointment) 2. I rescheduled the appointment for Thursday at 4PM. (Again I had to adjust my work schedule as I work a regular full time job) 3. When I arrived on Thursday, Michel checked me in and said the car would be done soon. I left on foot and got a call that they would not be able to complete the trailer hitch installation. I instructed him to speak to the manager and to call me back, I never received a telephone call back. 4. When i arrived back at the store location an hour and a half later Michel was not working anymore and another employee could not help me, so i asked for the manager of the store. 5. The manager simply repeated that they could not complete the work this night and i would have to reschedule. (the appointment was moved to Wednesday on their computer system instead of Thursday). After getting nowhere in any conversations I suggested that i purchase the materials and I would install the hitch myself. They showed me the instructions and they were simply installing 6 bolts and wiring. 6. It took my wife and myself 3 hours to install the hitch. (We were to pick up a trailer this weekend). The entire experience was disrespectful, unprofessional and uncaring. I called 4-29 to have the deposit returned to my credit card and it took them 15 minutes to complete the request. read more

Horribly ran business, with poor customer service. Reserved a box truck for a move two months prior to the date of our move. The day before we were told that our truck was no longer going to be available at the Coralville location, and we had to drive 100 miles to pick up a truck in Ottumwa. We were still responsible for covering our gas costs to and from the Ottumwa location. If looking to book a moving truck in the future I will be using a private rental service with more responsible booking/reservation practices. Wish there was a 0 star option. read more

We reserved a Uhaul for 2 days, packed it to the brim, and were then told our reservation was no longer available and we had to return the truck. One phonecall from an unknown number, no voicemail/memo at the store, nothing. We were also fully charged for 2 days. My husband went in last night to see about renting a car trailer, after listening to the employee on what was clearly a personal call (and my husband calling out several times fr service), my husband finally called the U-Haul 800# and asked to be connected to the Coralville Store. Husband then listened to the phone ring and ring and ring. 800# operator tried to reach the store twice, and then tried to tell my husband they must be busy. Husband told her that he was standing in the store, listening to them let the phone ring. Employee who finally came out to help him was not helpful, and wanted husband to call some other division of the company to make his reservation. Husband took his business elsewhere. Scheduled a 14" unit on a Tuesday for a morning pickup on the following Sunday. I received a call to confirm a TWO PM pickup on FRIDAY. Extremely short notice when I had a specific time slot to move in to my new place 4 hours away. From reading other reviews, at least they called; and it was the cheapest option available. Would never ever use these guys again. They deal with a lot of clueless college students and their parents, I get it....but they treat everyone horribly. A guy walked up next to me asking to rent a certain truck, the clerk's response was "Yeah right...." -- as if the customer was stupid for even questioning it. Plus there are no clear instructions given to customers about where to return the truck. Apparently parking it in the middle of the street is their procedure. Who knew. Like I said, if you could find another outlet for U-HAUL -- DO it! The Coralville branch is bad. read more
