Best place in Lisbon (and maybe even Portugal!) to buy your wine - Porto, Madeira, Moscatel, etc…read more But bit hard to find right now with the annoying scaffolding that covers almost the whole building including the sign so don't miss it! I highly recommend you do your wine shopping here. Even after going to Porto and going directly to the port cellars I was quite disappointed to realize that selection wasn't that much better in person and prices were even slightly higher! If I were to do it again, I would have bought everything in Lisbon at this store and gotten a Global Blue receipt to be reimbursed the 23% TVA tax at the airport (min 63 euro purchase). With the 23% TVA tax savings I definitely would have saved some big money because otherwise I found prices only $1-2 lower than back in NYC. I was quite surprised since I often travel to France and prices for the same wine are often 2-3 times higher back in the US. Bottom line, US prices are actually rather competitive so don't expect amazing bargains. But if you prefer to have a souvenir bottle after your visit to a port cellar or the only place you could find the bottle was at the company's own port cellar then go ahead and buy your bottles there. But I still I think it's a bit of a ripoff buying directly at the port cellar so visit wine stores first in Lisbon and Porto before - I regret not taking more photos of the prices while shopping. I visited their other locations in Lisbon but this one was the biggest and had the best selection. There are at least 2 other locations - just 4 blocks down (corner of Rua dos Fanquieros and Rua da Conceicao) plus also Mercado da Ribeira. Staff are friendly and helpful but not pushy and they do a very nice job of bubble wrapping your purchases for your flight back. Oh, and don't forget to check out the amazing old wines in their back cellar. They have wines over 100 years old - including an extremely rare 1715 madeira wine! That one is locked up though for obvious reasons but you can drool over it behind the glass. ;-) Prices below are best prices I found in Portugal (1.06 EUR/USD) vs NYC (after 9% sales tax) Porto Kopke 10y - $23 Portugal vs $24 NYC (Garnet Wines) Porto Niepoort Tawny - $16 Portugal vs $16 NYC (Garnet Wines) Porto Kopke 20y - $49 Portugal vs $52 NYC (Garnet Wines) Madeira Blandy's 10y - $25 Portugal vs $32 NYC (Mr. Wright Wines)

Based on my experience, the acores gin was about one and a half times more than I've been able to find elsewhere, but still better than running around town at the last minute to find quality items. The store is well organized and has a classic look. I mentioned needing the tax refund, which wasn't included. Kind of a fail.

While this place is right smack in the tourist district, just off Praca dom Pedro IV (if you are on…read morethe plaza, just pass through the arch and you'll see this place), the price is very reasonable and not at all touristy, even though most of the diners appeared to be tourists like us. There is another restaurant listing called O Bacalhoeiro, but they are actually the same place with one entrance. They were likely separate restaurants in the past, I don't know if it's through happy marriage or hostile take-over, but now a doorway is dug through the wall and the two places operate as one. They have a multi-language menu, plus a non-translated daily specials. Like many restaurants in Portugal, they bring you a few appetizers which you can leave untouched, or tell them which ones you want and they'll whisk the rest away (for the next table), but if you take a bite you'll be billed. We went on a weekend evening and there was a wait for about half an hour. We were looking forward to trying the seafood rice, but they were out. So I ended up with a grilled octopus, which I enjoyed very much - it's a whole octopus, with head and all the arms, for €9.50 including sides. The grilled ribs were tender and very flavorful too. When the meal was over, we were treated to a complimentary shot of port wine. A most delicious and surprisingly affordable meal.

Our second stop on the Lisbon food tour. Had a variety of food ready for us including Queijo da…read moreserra with pumpkin jam, which is cheese of the mountain, a very soft buttery cheese, which was just delicious with the pumpkin jam. Next was Pastéis de bacalhau or codfish cakes which were the best that we had in Lisbon. Next up, Octopus salad, which I did not expect to like, but it had a great flavor of olive oil and white wine vinegar and I would order again for sure! And finally Peixinhos da horta, or fish of the garden. Which turns out to be tempura fried green beans. They were also very good. Very friendly staff and we had some house wine, Rosé wine Monte Amarelo to wash it all down. Would definitely go back here again!
