I stayed at the Art Ovation Hotel in Sarasota last weekend for a private family event on Saturday. Friday evening, I was looking for a lite bite, so I found my way to Tzeva. At about 8:00 or so, I was the only customer in the restaurant, which I found unusual. I was seated by the host, nice guy, and then the server came by to take my drink order. The wine I selected was very good!!! Then I ordered the Falafel. It came shortly after and looked/smelled wonderful!!! What happened next truly surprised & disappointed me!! The dish came with a wonderful sauce, but no Pita to sop up the sauce!!!! When I called the server over and said that was very unusual, she asked if I wanted Pita. I said of course, otherwise this great sauce will go to waste. She then told me the pita was an ADDITIONAL $5!!!!! I still wanted the pita, but SERIOUSLY!!!! $5 for bread that should AUTOMATICALLY come with a dish that has a sauce!!!!! Talk about "nickel & diming" your customers!!!!! That error in judgement cost the hotel a few meals, once I spread the word to my family/friends that were also there to celebrate our nephews!! Other that that, my weekend at the hotel was STELLAR!!!! The event was catered flawlessly, the room was excellent, too!! I would have liked the Valet Parking to be more reasonable, as $45 per day seems steep, given not many alternatives. All in all, a very nice weekend....next time I stay, I'll be dining out, though!!! The service was great and the atmosphere was so calming and the decor is beautiful. This hotel is stunning inside and the rooftop bar has a beautiful view with a pool. The food was nothing to brag about. I like Mediterranean food but the lamb chop dish was dry and not fresh. The Falafel was good along with the hummus. We dined with two other couples and everyone loved their meals. We ordered a lot of small plates and passed them around. There was also a short rib dish ordered and it was "ok" not the best I've ever tried but not horrible. I will try this restaurant again but probably stick to the small plates. read more

Tonight we had theater tickets and this place is right across the street and the art hotel and we decided to give it a try. We ate their New Year's Eve as part of a New Year's Eve ticket, but we didn't eat there and order off a menu that was a buffet the food was very good then and it was great tonight we had we shared a salad with the their own vinaigrette dressing, which was better than wonderful and then we each had chicken shot stick, which was excellent. It came on yams with a kind of a jelly apricot that they put on it and it was wonderful and then we shared a piece of Turkish coffee cake with believe it or not Pepper, ice cream and coffee. Normally I don't dine at hotel restaurants but walking by Tzeva I noticed the menu and nice looking outdoor dining and decided to take a chance. They have a good selection of middle eastern dishes served as appetizers, small plates and large plates We picked a few small plates including vegetable pakora, lamb white bean hummus, charred octopus and Israeli salad. Loved all dishes, the salad was light and refreshing, vegetable pakora was a great deal for $5 and the charred octopus was tender and flavorful. Bread is included with meal. Good selection of wines. We got the Seeker Pinot grigio which complemented our meal and reasonably priced at $37. All in all we had an excellent experience, good food, atmosphere and fair prices. After the meal they allowed us to bring our wine upstairs to the 8th floor rooftop for a view of the Sarasota sunset. read more

We had a really nice dinner here last night. It's in a beautiful classic hotel conveniently located in downtown Sarasota, and the food lives up to the decor. We didn't get any drinks, so can't comment on cocktails aside from saying they looked good. We got the hummus with Moroccan chicken, which was quite delicious. Just a note that it's served cold, I've had it where the chicken on top is hot, but this rendition is not that - still we found it very nice, especially the crunchy pickled corn bits. We also got the toasted feta cheese, which was really delicious and reminded me a lot of saganaki. I was visiting my parents for their 59th wedding anniversary and you KNOW I am all about trying out new places and potentially reviewing them. Because a girl's got to have hobbies! Dad sent me a link to Tzeva's website and I was intrigued. I read the Tzeva menu, which is being billed as "mediterranean." But is more a "fusion" of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Indian. I was IN! Turns out Mom and Dad had eaten there the night before. So...now we're regulars?? The Art Ovation Hotel is lovely, you can dine inside or outside. The outdoor setting is pretty fantastic. I highly recommend, because it is on a patio space that is raised up above the sidewalk/street level and you're right in the heart of downtown Sarasota, with municipal parking on one side and theaters on the other. So the people watching is an A+! A good time was had by all! Two Things: When I eat a restaurant for the first time (or really any time) I'm going to try to eat As Many Things As Possible. And a place that serves "small plates" or "tapas" style food is my jam! Tzeva is that kind of place. You've got Daily Vegetable selections AND Hummus (as in an entire Hummus section!!) AND small plates AND salads AND kebabs AND "large plates." Uhhhh....YES PLEASE. Mom and Dad already know what's coming if we're trying a new place. Do NOT eat before dinner. Make an EARLY reservation That way we can attempt as much food as possible! Eat to win my friends! EAT TO WIN!! So! You know, I wanted to get ALL 5 of the Daily Veg Selection. But Dad objected to having to eat pickled veg AND slaw. He would only agree to the selection if we could get grilled veg x2 and Pakora (after I explained to him what Pakora is: in essence, deep fried veggie fritters/dumplings). All I'm gonna say is that they loved Pakora so much we ordered a second round and Dad was SUPER EXCITED to have discovered a new food he can order every time (they're moving into an apartment DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET next month...). The Pakora was, in fact, perfect: crispy, flavorful, served HOT. Grilled veg was Broccolini and they knocked it out of the park. I have NEVER had Broccolini that was as good. And I've eaten a lot of damn Broccolini. I also loved the pickles. I don't even know what they were. Ate the whole bowl. Marinated mushrooms? Perfection. We got 3 Hummus': Vegetarian (with curried cauliflower on top!!!!); "traditional" (with Aleppo seasoning, so I think we're talking Syrian); and Masabacha. All are served with soft, warm Pita. The Hummus is delicious. I prefer my Hummus in the Lebanese/Israeli style: puréed to silky smooth. This is not that. It is slightly chunky. Still, DELICIOUS. We ordered Falafel. May I just say, Tzeva is THE BEST FALAFEL I've ever had in the US. No. Really. The Falafel is light and fluffy and served hot and full of parsley. PERFECTION. Usually I skip Falafel because it is dense and greasy here. Not THIS Falafel. GET IT! We ALL had the Romaine salad, which is Tzeva's take on a Caesar Salad. It's not, strictly a Caesar, but it is DELICIOUS! And topped with a scoop of Quinoa. So! HEALTHY!! I then ordered the Snapper large plate (over the loud and repeated objections of my father, who kept insisting that Grouper is always better in Sarasota. But I don't like to eat the Groupers. They're so friendly. The poor bastards...). The Snapper comes with Za'atar, dukkha, Bombay yams, pickled smoked carrots, muhammara. Let's just take a moment to talk about the yams. Which are ACTUAL yams (not the orange sweet potatoes that a lot of Americans think are yams...) and served with everything and are SO INCREDIBLY GOOD. I ate a lot of the yams... The Snapper was crazy good. No, really. SO FREAKING GOOD. Wow. Much much more flavorful than I anticipated or expected. EXCELLENT. GET THE SNAPPER! Skip dessert... Our waitress was pretty FANTASTIC. But Tzeva is clearly still struggling a little with their "systems." So bring your patience and your kindness, but bring yourself! Because this place is GOOD GOOD! read more

A lovely setting within the hotel, if a bit overpriced - as is typical of hotel restaurants. The menu has great variety - at our table, the açaí bowl and kebab breakfast were particular hits. I do wish that the kebab had come with one more skewer, or one more pita - I was still a little peckish after my meal. Service was very attentive to our large group. My only pass was the coffee - very bitter, would have loved to see elevated options like French press to go with the more elevated food menu. read more

Very rarely can you say you had a "dining experience" when you go to a restaurant. Well, I can wholeheartedly say that is what you get when you go to Tzeva, My family and I dined there several weeks ago and are still raving about it. The ambiance is lovely and Dylan, the manager ( with a great Australian accent) bent over backwards to ensure everything was perfect. Rather than each of us ordering an entree, we tried all of the appetizers, small plates and salads. We also split two entrees. Some stand outs were the falafel, charred octopus, the hummous and the lamb kebab. Just when we thought we couldn't eat another bite, we decided to try 2 desserts. The Black Sesame Brulee and the Turkish Coffee Cake. Please give this restaurant a try. You will not be sorry. You will be amazed! We also ate at Tzeva for breakfast and it was so delicious. There are many options on the menu but we loved the veggie omelet and the Acai bowl. One morning I ordered the steel cut oatmeal with the accompanients on the side. Wow! Great little restaurant concept located inside of Art Ovation. This menu is unique to downtown Sarasota with a Mediterranean theme. The place was nicely decorated to the theme down to the plates and water glasses. The room had several circular, cushioned booths that added to the ambiance. The menu is limited with a few options of handhelds, salads, kebob, and mains. We opted in for lamb handheld with fries, falafel with side salad, and a side of marinated broccoli. Taking a moment to enjoy Savor Sarasota...this restaurant was on my radar. It's inside a lovely boutique hotel in downtown Sarasota. We went for "lunch". They offer inside/outside seating, and it's also right off the lobby... which is convenient. Seated at the window, we were able to watch the world go by. Lovely Palm Street gave a true Florida vibe and people watching entertainment out the window. Our waiter was prompt, but there were only a few tables occupied. We started with the homemade hummus. (classic and white bean).. both were excellent but the white bean stole the show! The homemade pita was hot, fresh, and yummy. On to the main course: grouper shashlik with a sweet potato/yam puree and lamb shashlik with yellow rice (kabobs). They were excellent. In my opinion, the perfect lunch portions. The service was very good and our waiter was respectful...we enjoyed both the food and surroundings. It was a great place to be able to talk and catch up. The hotel also displays local and international artists' work throughout the hotel for those looking for a gallery experience. The best and closest parking is in a public garage behind the hotel off of Palm Street and is very reasonable. read more

Excellent experience here my second visit! This was for a four-course wine dinner paired with Banfi wines, and I was very impressed with the quality and creativity of each dish. I loved how each course had both sweet and savory aspects, from tender poached flounder with white peaches and sage to lamb saddle with rosemary and blackberry. My favorite dish of the evening though had to be the duck, expertly cooked with a delicious plum-cherry hoisin glaze and flavorful celeriac puree. And the dessert was the perfect finale, a dense and decadent chocolate torte with creamy coffee ice cream and a five spice mousse that gave it a wonderfully unique flavor profile! Was lucky enough to be here on opening night last night, and it was incredible. The menu was perfectly balanced and a great spread of Mediterranean options. We tried many dishes, all of which were great, but a few stood out. The cocktail list was artfully assembled, and the Hera was delightful. The charred octopus is the best octopus I have ever had (I order it wherever I can), beautifully plated and fragrant. The falafel was also the best I've ever had, again with beautiful presentation and with a wonderful onion jam to accompany it. For entrees, the wagyu prime rib (pictured) was perfectly cooked, tender and nicely portioned. The black sesame brûlée was a unique dessert with a great look and was naturally less sweet, I much preferred it to regular crème brûlée. The staff was very nice, particularly the hostess Danica, and manager Dylan Gracie, who was around frequently to tell their story, welcome us, and collect our feedback. This is a much needed option in Sarasota and I'll be back as much as possible. It's telling that I am typing this from the restaurant the following day for breakfast. read more

Two of us ordered WAGYU SKIRT STEAK Traditional tare, lentil dahl, miso mustard sauce, black garlic gremolata, chermoula toum $46 Everyone at the table could not believe the size of the portion. It was so small I thought why bother. It was literally two bites. The lentil consumed the entire plate. Since three of us eat a carnivore's lifestyle so this was incredibly disappointing. Also, service was nice and friendly but when we asked her for recommendations , she told us she doesn't like fish and can't recommend it. Had dinner there tonight by accident. We had reservations for another Sarasota place. Took one wrong turn at the beginning of the ride, ended up 1 hour late, so the rez was obviously out. How lucky for us! Pretty sure this was way better than what we woulda had if the drive to Sarasota had gone normally. Anyway, ended up by the west end of Main St. Parked in the deck. Tzeva is next door. Caught the wife's eye. The restaurant was booked for a private party. But ... They had outside dining. Asked if we had a rez? No. Seated us anyway. Had 3 of the veggies. One was broccoli - great. One was a slaw - really very thinly sliced carrots - very good. Third was mushrooms, they were pickled. Tasty. Then we had the Veggie Hummus - spectacular. The caramelized onion jam was glorious. Wife had Snapper entree - great. Crisp & slightly salty outside, perfectly prepared moist fresh delicious inside. I had chicken kebabs - perfection. One of our 4 entrees was wrong. It took quite a while for the correct entree to come to the table. No apology or compensation was offered. Salad was served with entree instead of before. 2 of the cocktails on the menu were not available. The server was not friendly or competent. We were never asked if we wanted another drink. We asked for limes that never came. Used glasses and plates were not removed from the table. The food was good but not enough to comfort the service. We will not be returning. read more

Kitchen closed at 9. Arrived at 845, just me. They clearly were mentally done for the night. Ordered an app and an entree right away. Someone from the kitchen brought both at the same time and twice referred to me as "brother." The waitress dropped the hatchet without asking, and even though I had nearly a full drink in front of me, a manager type came over a minute later, called me "my friend," and pressed me to pay out. If you don't want to serve til your advertised time, please just tell me the kitchen is closed. And the only name you can call me is "Sir." I've never had less professional service. Makes me wonder what else is going on there. I still tipped 15%, but for me that's like stiffing them. Will never return. But worse, the woman who works the bar there is so clueless and apathetic and dumb that my husband could not wait to leave her and the food the minute we received the bill. Do you realize how this bartender, we will not mention the lousy food purveyed right now, can make the experience ponderous and unpleasant? How do you allow her to serve we hotel customers?
