We were served and then ignored, empty wine glasses and plates sat for a long time until we waved at him. We were in the main ding room so he was within eyesite. Total lucky find via Yelp as we were down the road and on our way home. Dined here in a Sunday night; parking lot packed and everything else closed. Warm and inviting dining rooms ( three). Big menu, and all our choices provided us with exceptional food: the three dip special ( we had hummus, eggplant and torokafteri) with yummy pita; the chicken lemon soup was excellent; my spanakopita was light, crispy and fantastic, as was the accompanying side of Greek salad which had a delicious dressing. My husband ordered the seafood platter, and everything was well prepared, tasty and also light. We ordered some wine, an imiglykos, which was sweet and good. The table next to us ordered beer salad, lamb shank, and gyro platters which all looked mouth watering. Djonisi was an excellent server, very personable. The customers at the next table told us they were present when the restaurant opened two years ago, and that they moved out of the area, but to give this restaurant our business. When living in Chicago, going to 'Greektown' meant an absolute delicious meal. Djonisi's is my Sarasota area 'Greektown'. Mic drop on the food! It has ALWAYS been hot, fresh and AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS!! Instead of explaining everything we ate, I've attached pictures and have to tell you all that the food is 10 stars out of 5 stars!!! Service is probably 4 out of 5 stars, so relax, enjoy your conversation and remember that you're not in New York!!! The restaurant is clean, including the bathrooms, the decorations are clean looking and fit great into the concept. My comment that I wanted to emphasize, is that it's a family business. The owners make EVERYTHING fresh and are always there! Beautiful, clean restaurant, homemade scratch meal. There is a restaurant in the same shopping plaza as Djonisi's that we had planned to go to but the line was out the door. I had heard Djonisi's is really good so we gave it a try. We were seated right away. Everyone loved and finished their meal. We started with the 3 dip appetizer. The pita was probably the best I've ever had - hot and fresh. I had the Handcrafted Spanakopita that comes with a little Greek Salad on the side. One person had Bifteki (a mix of ground beef & pork with feta cheese) which she enjoyed. She said the side of rice didn't have much flavor but enjoyed the meat and potatoes. Stopped here on my way down to Venice for a couple of weeks. Actually was going to Kacies but saw Djonisi's and read the reviews. No doubt the best Greek/Medi food I have had. Truly fresh, truly grilled and authentic. Even the Greek rose' was a treat. Beats any Greek I have had in Tampa area or New Orleans area. It was actually one of the best meals I have had in the Sarasota-Venice area, of any style. We always travel with an iced cooler and our own to go containers, so leftovers are always welcome. If I can give this place zero stars, I would my wife and I go out to eat at least once a week most of the time twice I have to say this is the worst place. I've been that I can remember. We arrive for dinner at 7:50 PM because you said it closed at nine when we walked in the door. The gentleman said you can see anywhere but we close at 8:30 it was a Friday night and there was one other table there I ordered the octopus and my wife ordered the lemony soup The octopus was slimy and it was served with this white sauce, which tasted like mayonnaise My wife soup had no lemony flavor. In fact it was white. She proceeded to order the special and I ordered the gyro platter The plate arrived. There was five pieces of pita a clump of gyro meat. Three wedges of boiled potatoes, no flour and some Spanish rice that tasted like rice with tomato sauce. The only good thing I could say is the beer was cold They are way better Greek restaurants in town. We tried this place because it was family owned.. Easy parking in strip mall lot. Very tasty recipes. Loved the tzatziki, humus and eggplant dips I chose as a trio for my starter. I especially loved the pita wedges served with the dips. Beautiful interior, which is much prettier than I expected after seeing photos online. Enjoyed the grilled salmon added to the beet salad. The salmon was fresh and well prepared. I requested the salad dressing on the side. I wish they used a different lettuce than spinach; I'm not a fan of spinach leaves. Portions are generous, so we didn't have room for dessert. This is a family owned restaurant... every dish is special. The fish dishes are my favorite picks. The prices are also more reasonable than the noisy high rent district restaurants at UTC. We were in the mood for a gyro, so we tried this restaurant. It was our first time there. We arrived at 2:10 and not aware their lunch menu ended at 2pm. Incredibly, you can not purchase a gyro after two. We ended up staying and ordered a much more expensive entree platter of gyro meats. The food was average at best and I think overpriced, especially since we were there for lunch. The next we are in Sarasota, we will try another Greek restaurant. read more

Hubby and I finally stopped here tonight after seeing all the rave reviews and we left more than satisfied! We ordered Avgolemono soup, Gyro platter and Chicken Souvlaki w/ oven potatoes, salad and tomato rice. Everything is made from scratch including the charred bread. Our server is the son of the family who owns this restaurant and we learned the parents are cooking. Located next door to the amazing International Market. The charming decor transports you to the Greek islands. The mostly traditional Menu also offers a couple of German dishes, which is somewhat unusual. While our service left a bit to be desired, the food made up for it. Our waiter may have been inexperienced which accounted for the mixup in our order and our check. The vegetable soup was very well seasoned and flavorful . We especially enjoyed the meze platter which included taramosolata (roe & potato spread) humus, eggplant, fresh beets and warm pita. The gyros meat was especially good, moist and flavorful. We also had the chicken kebab with hot, crispy fries. We shared tiramisu which was generous size but dry, lacking the moistness you get from espresso or liquor and custard...more like a cake. read more

There were a few things I need to mention Service- the owner Djonisi was so stuck up, obnoxious. He yelled at my kid when he tried to put the plate on the table .. my son did not pay attention and he is not like other kid. When we first entered the restaurant, we already noticed the irritating expression on his face when we wheeled my 85 years old mom with Parkinson's to our table. I did not complain about the hair in my kid s salad cuz i did not want him to disrespect us again. I bet u if I said something then, he could think that we tried to get free meal etc ... I did not say much out of the respect for my parents . I do hate the fact that we have to pay 20 percent gratitude for such a jerk behavior... I know that he tried to keep calm but he was not calm but his anger shows ... this is restaurant business .. be kind and stay calm Other people are sweet especially young waiter and short hair lady Food is good a bit salty.
