I had smashed my iPhone 5 whilst out. The screen was cracked and no longer worked (it was cracked from the right hand corner downwards). I went to TyneTech to get it repaired in which they were friendly and said it would be fully fixed for £50 in 45 minutes. I didn't have a problem at all with this. The gentleman that I spoke to when I dropped my phone off said that my graphics card could be damaged because of the corner that the crack originated from, but wouldn't know until he opened it up, and that if he put the new screen on and it wasn't back to normal working order, he could fix it for an extra £20 or give me a full refund and put my old screen back on. I found this perfectly acceptable and left the phone with them to fix.
I came back 45 minutes later and the phone was 'fixed' but there was a different man that I dealt with this time. All the buttons etc worked fine, but I noticed that the screen was a dimmer colour than it should be, the text had a shadow as if it was ghosting and there were faint pixelated lines in the background. I picked him up on this and he explained that the graphics card was in fact broken and that he fixed it the best he could. I accepted this and went around the corner to another phone repair shop, which was rated better on review websites for a second opinion.
He explained that the graphics card was not in the same place as TyneTech told me, and after taking a look at it, that the screen he had used was a faulty screen, which is why I was getting the problems with the ghosting and colour changes.
I then went back to TyneTech, and asked for a refund and to take the 'new' screen back and give me back my old one. At this point he got angry and was insulting us towards another customer saying that 'he wouldn't fix our problem' and that we'd 'have to pay a £10 labour charge' if I wanted to get my old screen back and a refund. When I challenged him about paying the labour charge he then turned to the customer (only a few metres away) and proceeded to say 'mummy and daddy will have to pay for her broken phone, not me' amongst other very rude and insulting comments.
The first gentlemen came back and explained he wouldn't charge me anything for labour and I would have a full refund. I accepted this and waited 1 hour for my phone to be changed (the man fixing my phone wouldn't let me watch him swap the screen and said he would take his time with it).
He returned my phone to me with my old screen, which was now smashed even more, and the display was completely gone. I do appreciate that swapping a cracked screen is difficult and extra damage is inevitable, however the reasoning for the enter display being ruined was (which I later found out from the phone shop from around the corner) the motherboard.
To put a long story short, TyneTech charged me £50 for a faulty screen with many defects, and then once confronted about it proceeded to purposely damage my phone further.
I would defiantly never recommend this place; very rude and sly staff. read more
