Chef Roellinger changed the way I see food. He changed the way I prepare and present my ceviche. He changed the way I use salt. I am a lover of spice, used to calling myself a connoisseur. I learned humility at this restaurant's table. I rediscovered what it is to savour every bite, to marvel at the marriage of tomato and dessert, to relearn curry, coming from a culture where roti is bread, channa is peas, and chutney is confiture. The chateau overlooks the sea, the record breaking tide unveiling miles long sand and Mont St Michel in the near distance. The table settings, votives of seeds and flowers are reminiscent of what you see through the windows. My first plate here, I remember thinking, a piece of the ocean was presented on my plate. I had white fish in a frothy fennel reduction. I tried for weeks after to recreate the experience. Technique is everything at this level of dining. The dessert is an onslaught of the sugar cavalry. It's everything you expect at a mad hatters tea party: fantastical, unusual pairings of things you expect to be savoury but they turn out to be sweet- plus all the classics. And they come in tiered platters on wheels until you say stop. I'm not even a dessert person but here is a place where yes is usually the right word.

With sea views and a terrace overlooking the shoreline, approached through attractive gardens, the restaurant's situation already feels special. The food and excellent service reinforce those first impressions. The menu is particularly strong on seafood, beautifully and imaginatively cooked (Roellinger is renowned for his sophisticated use of spices); the bread is baked on-site. The dessert trolley is something of a highlight, though: a gorgeous, ever-changing selection including ice creams, tarts, caramels and much more. You are encouraged to try as many as you like and everything is superb! While the restaurant is not cheap, it certainly offers excellent value both for the quality of the food and for a lovely overall experience.

There are a ton of crepe places in Saint Malo, but we got lucky we were able to eat here without a reservation. I highly recommend making a reservation here if you want to eat here, since the place is tiny and most the tables are for 2-4 people. We came shortly after it opened and got the last table for 2, but there were so many other parties after us that got turned away. I got a crepe with spinach, cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms and egg and it was so delicious. They didn't skimp on the vegetables and the spinach was fresh and leafy (I've been to other crepe places where they use frozen shredded spinach). The crepe itself was light, fluffy, buttery and crispy - just as it should be, with crisp edges. It's the worst when the crepes are soggy, but this was not. I loved every bite of my crepe. My husband also loved his crepe, which was the Bonnet Rouge (9,00 €) which had oeuf, fromage, chorizo, ratatouille maison (egg, cheese, chorizo and ratatouille). It was really delicious - the chorizo was spicy and the ratatouille was flavorful and not watery - it didn't make the crepe soggy. For dessert, we got the Babouchka crepe with vanilla ice cream, apples, almonds, homemade salted caramel and whipped cream (9,00 €). The whipped cream was super fresh, the salted caramel was fresh and homemade and not too sweet, and it was all amazing. One of the best sweet crepes I've had. All the ingredients were super fresh and local, the crepes themselves were perfectly cooked, thin, and crispy (for the galette). For such a touristy place like Saint-Malo, I didn't think we would have such good food at reasonable prices. We would absolutely come back here on another trip and heartedly recommend it. The decor is pretty kitschy with fairies and goblins everywhere, and there were a lot of families and children when we went. It may not seem very upscale in feel, but the food here is amazing!

Don't forget to make a reservation, because Crêperie des lutins is always packed with locals and savvy tourists who know that this is the place to come for authentic, fluffy crêpes, whether buckwheat or white flour. Skip the kirs and apéritif crackers and dive straight in. If you're feeling brave or particularly peckish, or both, you can begin your three-crêpe saga with a galette au beurre salé (a buckwheat crêpe with salted butter). For my main course, I ordered a galette with egg, sliced bacon (poitrine), pan-fried potatoes, cheese, and a stunning quantity of caramelized onions. No questions asked, this galette hit the spot. I still can't get over those amazing caramelized onions. It is blatantly obvious that this place isn't making compromises when it comes to the quality and preparation of each, individual ingredient. I wasn't hungry enough to order my usual frangipane crêpe for dessert, so I got a scoop of caramel ice cream. The flavor was surprising- more of a caramel brulée with that carbon bite of something purposefully "burnt" than the one-dimensional candy, caramel flavor. For my part, I found it excellent. The service was perfect. Polite, efficient, not-too-pushy but not-too-distant either. I was definitely well-fed and well looked after. Don't forget to ask for a bottle of artisanal cider. "Doux" if you like it sweeter and fruitier, "brut" if you like it dry with a refreshing bite.

Get there when it opens or make a reservation as it is a small restaurant and will get full quickly. We had the special which was steak, sausage and duck accompanied by eggplant, potatoes and salad. That was only 27 euros. The meal was the best for the quality and quantity that we had in all of France. The meat is cooked in a fireplace in the main dining room. The desserts were equally amazing. I forget their French names, but we had a strawberry, ice cream dessert topped with whipped cream and cream puffs with ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Make this a definite dinner stop on your next visit to Saint Malo!

Cons - It's incredibly hot in there, we were sitting next to the door (which was open) and it was still very hot in there. - I have my doubts about the service. The man preparing the meat also sits the people, takes the orders, cleans the tables, ... This is so much that the service starts to suffer: things are forgotten, you get served later than people coming in later, ... There's no good follow-up. - I understand meat is the primary aspect of coming here, but still, more thought could be given to what's being served with the meat. We got two good potatoes with dressing, some lettuce with dressing, and ratatouille. So far so good. Furthermore: two slices of raw carrot and some raw cabbage. - No beer available!
