There are soaps, candles, hand salve, charcuterie and cheese boards, children's books and toys, earrings, greeting cards, candy, linen spray, towels, a book about how valuable teachers are (that brought my mom and I nearly to tears) and handmade stained glass pieces. It's so cutie and welcoming. My son was happily playing with a block display (made to play with). We bought the blocks, a book about an old woman who swallowed a fly, a tempura paint marker set, earrings, and two boards as gifts. It was quite a haul. Small businesses are important and vital in our communities. We are so glad to pop in. I can safely say that nothing is the shop costs six pennies!

Whatever you need -- ornaments, santa statues, potpourri, candles -- you'll probably find it here. It's almost overwhelming when you first walk in and see all the rooms of this converted house each filled with beautiful items to decorate your home. Although the predominant theme is seasonal as is expected given the time of year, Sixpence also carries plenty of items that have no season: wind chimes, clocks, fragrant oils, general knickknacks including an extraordinary clock with a turn of the century look. At least one of the two people working on the day I was there must have been an owner as she was able to talk at length on each item and when the next shipment was due, but both went out of their way to make every guest who walked in, feel welcome. Both seemed proud of the store and it showed in their easy and down-to-earth interactions with their customers. I look forward to visiting this place again, if only to see if the seasonal slant of the merchandise gives way to the more timeless.

They had everything from t-shirts to pillows, hair pins to home decor. I walked away with the best smelling glycerine soap and body cream made with Honey and Sweet Tea! I guess that's where the name "The Doodling Bug" makes sense. The Doodling Bug is a tiny shop of creative, tangible doodles by NC locals. The home decor things like hand painted signs are equal parts funny and serious; the t-shirts celebrate NC; the hand-knit hats, scarves, slippers and baby sweaters, are cute and soft. There's a limited selection of jewelry, a nice change of pace from other like stores; and the body lotions and scrubs are in not-so-common scents. The chalkboard, which I didn't see right away buried as it was amongst all the other wall art, is a nice gift for celebrating doodling -- classic style. The Doodling Bug is a good stop if finding a gift from local creative people is a gift preference for you.
