The cool bean swings!! Outside of Twirl

Absolutely must see for any families traveling to Taos!! Such a beautiful children's store! They have a huge assortment of toys for children of all ages! They also have two beautiful play areas for kids! One is inside & air conditioned- which is amazing given how hot it can get here in Taos! The second larger playscape is the outside area where one side is for little tikes (5 and under) and the second larger play structure is for all the kids & those who are kids at heart! This wonderful little store stole a piece of my heart! It's such a beautiful store/ place! I love that it's all Sponsored by donations as well! Definitely a must stop while in this beautiful town!

Great free play place for kids in downtown Taos adjacent to a toy store in what seems to be a historic building. I wish that every toy store would have a playground like this. My toddler was scolded by a shop keeper in a swanky store nearby for touching too many things, so I'm grateful we could come here for him to tire himself out.

Outside, a giant carving is wall sized.

The more you look, the more you see in this fantastical store. My group of grownups had fun just being in all that whimsy. Great detour from the usual tourist attractions, and of course, fabulous shopping for kids.

Do you have kids? Nieces or nephews? Take them here. Spend time here looking for something to get them. Twirl offers far more than basic toys and trinkets. Twirl carries engaging educationalitems that kids will enjoy for hours. I picked up a clever electricity kit using play-doh, modling clay and LED lights to make light up creations. And there was so much more to see. One of the best aspects of Twirl is out the back door. There is a huge, multi-attraction playground good for all age kids. Donations are accepted to maintain the site. We stopped by three times during our visit. It is a valuable asset to the area.

I was unimpressed with this toy store as there was very little in here that seemed locally produced.

I was vacationing in Taos and went to Twirl Toy Store without any kids -- but felt like a kid the entire time. Coolest toy store ever! I'm San Francisco and we don't have a place that has the delight factor that this cute shop has. The experience starts from the outside -- where you're greeted by a ride-on duck. When you enter the store -- you're transported to nether, nether land -- totally sucked in by the classics, the silly, the whimsical. That's another way of saying wooden toys, Lego, fake moustaches, penguin pop-guns, and rainbow wigs. There's something for every kind of kid -- princess types, crafters, geeky science experimenters, builders, and those still breast feeding. And of course toys for nostalgic adults. The shopkeeper was very welcoming. She didn't mind at all when my girlfriends and I HAD TO try on the costumes! Pirate hats, dinosaur heads, rabbit ears, Spartan helmets. We looked so cool. I'm a good auntie and purchased designer bandaids for my nieces. The shopkeeper offered us free kiddie tattoos and most importantly a glass rock so we could throw it into the wishing well before left. The wishing well -- is more like a grotto -- where gnome families reside. I closed my eyes, wished that my now teenage son doesn't get into any car accidents this year, and threw the glass stone into the water. Thank you Twirl Toy Store for an enchanting time.

This place was AWESOME! I loved this multi-roomed toy store with its own killer playground. The prices seemed reasonable and the selection was unreal. They also offer free gift wrap if you so desire. So, so great.

This is a very cool toy store. First of all the selection of toys is great. The toys are top notch, and not just the noise makers that you find in so many different toy stores. We went into the store to find some new toys for 8 month old twins that we know, and we found some great options. The store is beautifully organized by age group, so finding what you are looking for is a breeze. In addition this store really is about the kids. When you walk out the back door, there is the greatest play structure ever. There are also other toys, trikes and more to try out. Out thirteen year old's eyes even grew big when she saw the back yard. If you have a kid somewhere in your life, and you are in the area, stop by and find them something cool.

This place was so cool! The aura is very relaxing and the art within the playground is like no other. We're sad that we don't have anything similar in Albuquerque, so we will have to make the drive back just to visit this place again! We could've spent many more hours in this place. Someone mentioned that it's the best toy store they've ever been to and I'd have to agree!

Located about 10 miles from Taos, NM stands this majestic bridge!…read more While on vacation, we decided to come see the gorge, the Rio Grande River, and the bridge that spans it. And what a sight it was to behold! We parked in the Rio Grande Gorge Rest Area. The bridge & gorge are viewable from here. There are sheltered picnic tables and restrooms here. In 1963 the bridge was started and was completed in 1965. It is part of the US Highway 64. There are three spans connected to create one bridge 1,280 feet long (two 300-foot-long approach spans with a 600-foot-long main center span). September of 2012, the bridge underwent a $2.4 restoration which included structural steelwork, a new concrete deck surface, new sidewalks, ramps, curbs, and gutters. We were unable to walk out onto the bridge, but we did walk out to the rim. The dirt path was easy to navigate. Once near the rim, it becomes rocky and there is no barrier to keep you safe from falling off the edge, so watch your step! Since I am not very steady of my feet, I didn't go out as far as I would have liked to. A few more steps and I would have had a better view, but I stopped. Sadly, the bridge was closed to pedestrians in Sept. 2025 due to suicides. I feel that by not getting to walk across the bridge, my experience was hindered. I would have loved to get a full head on view of the gorge! For me, having the view from here would have been safer and more ideal! You've probably seen this bridge since it has appeared in a few movies including Natural Born Killers, Twins, White Sands, She's Having a Baby, The Signal, Paul, Vacation, Wild Hogs, and Terminator Salvation. Locals call this bridge the "High Bridge" or the "Gorge Bridge". It is the seventh highest bridge in the U.S. It is located in the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. If we make it back here in the future, I hope we will be able to walk to the center of the bridge!

But that was not always the case as the gigantic 2011 Las Conchas wildfire burned through the monument's watershed. According to a story in the Albuquerque Journal newspaper, " the fire left thousands of acres charred and denuded, and cleared the way for huge floods through Frijoles Canyon in 2011 and again in 2013 that threatened key features of the (Bandalier) monument and the visitors center." Yes, little Frijoles Creek (El Rito de los Frijoles, Spanish for "the little river of beans,") turned into a mighty raging river of water. The floods here washed out Frijoles Rim Trail and the bottom part of the Falls Trail down to the Rio Grande. The Bandelier website says the "Frijoles Canyon Trail between Alcove House and the Upper Crossing "is basically a streambed hike at this point - passable but challenging in places due to erosion, rockfalls, fallen trees, log jams, flood debris, dense vegetation and numerous stream crossings," said the Journal newspaper at the time. Frijoles Creek generally flows at 10 cubic feet per second or less. But in September 2013, it was rushing along at 9,000 cfs, park rangers say. That's a lot of water moving around. Frijoles Creek was so powerfully flooded that 300-year old trees came toppling down along it's banks. But this Creek is so important because it is one of the few places in the plateau region where water flows year-round This reliable source of water must have been very important to the Native Peoples who utilized the H20 for drinking and cooking. Animals and wildlife would have been attracted to the area to drink at the stream. A wide range of plant life would have flourished along the stream. The Creek I saw at Bandalier in May 2015 was a peaceful stream of cold river water. The water is so cold because it flows down from the melted snow up in the mountains above the plateau. The Creek has waterfalls. Both Upper Frijoles Falls and Lower Frijoles Falls feed the Creek stream. But these waterfalls are not really the main attraction, as not much water flows over them. However, the hike up to see the Falls and the beautiful rocks around them are fantastic. I have to give Frijoles Creek 5 YELP STARS for it's unusual name and the fact that this hardy watershed has recently survived both a raging wildfire and torrential flooding. It's consistent flow of water enabled the Ancestral Pueblo people to survive and flourish in this sometimes arid and harsh climate.
