Batemans Mill Hotel & Restaurant

The hotel is family-run which really shows as you're made very welcome and nothing is too much trouble. We arrived on a Sunday lunchtime, and though all the restaurant tables were full and bar food isn't usually served at that time, they were happy to squeeze us into a corner and we had a wonderful lunch. Batemans doesn't do food on a Sunday evening, but provided us with a comprehensive printed list of alternatives complete with directions and guide prices. The hotel only has 8 rooms so feels like staying in a family home and never feels crowded. The building is (as you'd expect from the name) a converted mill and has been sensitively converted into a hotel. Breakfasts were enormous and really set us up for a day's walking in the Peak District. We didn't need to eat lunch at all during our stay and looked forward to Bateman's wonderful food in the evenings. The accommodation and food were very reasonably priced, and the whole experience was great.

Functional and affordable, but nothing special! A great…read moreoption if you just need a roof over your head and you don't want to fork out a fortune on somewhere to stay. If you book in advance this hotel is very reasonably priced however bear in mind on the day this can be much more expensive. On the board they advertised the rooms as £29 but a double room was actually £65 at the desk. Lucky we booked in advance so it was very reasonably priced. There is nothing particularly special about this hotel, it is very clean, but facilities are limited. The room was warm, the walk in the shower worked perfectly and we had no problem with the room booking in and out was really easy and the staff were very friendly. The buffet breakfast is okay, but to be honest I would suggest going into town for a more interesting option.

The picturesque village of Ashford with its lovely stone houses provide an antidote to the busy tourist haven of Bakewell three miles away and Riverside complements the feeling perfectly. The breakfast room had a lovely view of the turn in the canal. You can easily walk into Nottingham centre along the canal too, where you can get to the cool bars that are on the canal. If you go along canal the opposite way you will meet the Trent river and have a smashing view of Notts Forests City grounds. It's a nice walk too, during which we saw a family of Canada Geese. I guess it'd be a pretty handy hotel for the of Notts Forests games, as well as any of the cricket games at Trent Bridge.

This property also has a golf course, so you'll see lots of foot traffic around the back side, where there's a restaurant and golf shop. We stayed at the property for a couple of nights and our room was great. It faced the interior, so we could see a beautiful flower garden and more of a wooded area. Our room was a bit dated but well maintained. One thing I did not realize until we arrived is that our room, at least (and maybe all rooms), did not have air conditioning. Luckily for us, the (summer) temperature was comfortable, but this could be an issue if you visit during a hot spell. We had breakfast at the hotel restaurant both mornings and it was delightful. A traditional English spread (buffet) with self seating. Overall, staff was great. The only thing I'd caution against is the amount of stairs you'll have to go up and down trying to get from one place to the other just within the hotel since the topography has rooms and hallways at all levels. Pack lightly or ask for your bags to be delivered to your room at arrival.
