Don't expect the amenities that are promised to you during your initial tour to be the ones that you will receive once they have your money and you have moved in. I was so disappointed that I immediately had to begin looking for a new place to move that would have the amenities required to stay as healthy as possible, while dealing with my disabilities. Both Pioneer Village and Radiant Senior Living (the owner) advertise a commitment to creating and sustaining a comfortable, caring environment with great food, life-enriching activities, and reliable, courteous service. What we have observed is a commitment to cutting costs and using a poorly trained staff. We have frequently been told that operating procedures, menus, and management decisions are made at corporate headquarters in Portland. This is not conducive to responsive service or handling resident concerns. I strongly suggest you consider other senior living facilities.

Must admit, the setting, amenities and all that's offered here is perfect for seniors looking to simplify but not sacrifice living life to its fullest. I've been to a couple of these types of communities and this one is up there as far as what's offered. Resort living comes to mind, you can be as relaxed or active as you'd like. There's always something going on as far as activities and excursions...something for everyone for sure. Gor meals there's formal dining, a pub, takeout or room service. Food was decent and the options were terrific - perfect for the senior palate, smaller portions and quite a variety. Fitness programs for every level including a putting green (dont knock it until you've tried it!) My friends mom has been enjoying the local excursions at various attractions and taking in the sights with others who have the same interest. I like that there are cottages as a living option, true independent living with all the amenities of the community. My friends parents love their cottage, and I do too, perfect for the two of them. On this visit they had arranged a veteran's wall with photos of the residents who served...very nice way to pay tribute to the heroes on property. Oh and they also had a fantastic art wall showcasing some of the resident talent. Nice touch. This is exactly the type of retirement living I'd consider for myself or my own parents and it's certainly nice knowing our seniors are living in an active community that's lively and safe.

In late 2023, we moved to the Rogue Valley Manor (RVM), a licensed Continuing Care Community with…read morewide views, lush plantings and abundant trees. We enjoyed meeting the other residents. However, after 22 months, we left feeling angry, frustrated and hurt. A few months after our arrival, RVM implemented a "points" system for meals, and we experienced months of confusion regard when, where and how to eat. Rules changed daily and communication was spotty. Management made some questionable decisions at this time of massive changes. They fired the Food Service Manager, slashed dining staff hours and permanently shuttered one dining room. The implementation of the points program generated about 40 pages of single-spaced complaints from residents. During this time of unrest, one senior manager remarked, "If residents cannot handle moving to the points program, they should seek professional counseling." We chose to eat 90% of our meals at home but we ran into problems there, as well. That summer, we discovered that our cottage was too hot for us and too hot for the housekeepers, who refused to clean in our heat. We learned that management had ignored a neighbor with the same issue during the prior summer. We worked with that neighbor to document our cooling problems and sent a report to the managers involved. Eventually, with the assistance of the Resident Council President, we received extra insulation and were told, "You will have to pay for any future upgrades to your cottage." Our neighbor waited four more months for the same insulation without a confirmation it was coming. The next summer, we found that the new insulation was not enough to resolve our cooling problem. We submitted another work order but heard from no one until a few days before we left. Our experience suggested problems with basic management. Our tipping point was when I personally experienced unprofessional treatment by staff, including managers--pettiness and hostility--while working on two different projects. RVM says it is "resident-centered" but based on our above experiences, I disagree. One contributing factor may be that CCRC management and resident council leaders do not seem to be aware of Oregon's CCRC Resident Rights laws (ORS 101.115) for independent-living residents. Copies are not given to new residents nor are the Resident Rights referenced in meetings. Resident Rights should be given to all residents and for incoming residents, Resident Rights should be signed off by both parties. Surprisingly, Resident Council leadership told me they were not interested in Resident Rights (the very rights that ensured their roles as advocates for residents). One important Resident Right--residents receiving timely answers to their concerns--was of most concern. One manager told me, "I never read 'those letters' from residents." In conclusion, we did not want to live there for the rest of our lives. It was an expensive mistake.

After living in a much more expensive retirement community that didn't provide nearly the same level of care, the difference has been profound. Shortly after she moved in, my son and I were having dinner with her on her birthday. The staff came to our table to sing happy birthday, the entire dining room joined in, and they brought her a special cake. It was a beautiful, heartfelt moment during a vulnerable transition for our family. The staff here genuinely care about the residents. They create an atmosphere of warmth, dignity, and true community. Our family is incredibly grateful for the peace of mind this place provides.

Confrontational and underhanded better fits the upper management of this facility. There is no understanding and certainly no wants to work with residents or families needs." Flash forward to today: NOTHING has changed with these people - "led" by Charmagne? and Ms. Roper? - These are slanderous horrible people. Concern for residents and staff is an absolute joke. I've worked in several assisted living and SNF facilites. This looks a bit nicer on its face than many but don't let that fool you. The maintenance is also a joke with things not being addressed sometimes for months even if it compromises safety. Oh.... and apparently, the head of maintenance is the husband of Charmaigne (facility manager?). Now it all makes more sense:). The care of residents is atrocious while support for most staff is also non-existent. Meanwhile (per the residents), they continue to raise prices without adequate notice and apparently not for any reason(s) other than they can somehow get away with it - it's certainly not going towards an upgrade of food or services. Fortunately, I was able to get my relative out of there but for every visit I make to our old friends still stuck there, as a person who has committed their life to healthcare for decades it hurts my heart and sense of duty to care, to see these folks treated so poorly while the facility and its "leaders" and owners of this facility continue to profit from the misery of others. Management / owners should be thoroughly ashamed; and if they are not, then there is something terribly wrong. At the very least, they have no business working in this field in any way whatsoever!
