I tried the rose earl grey cupcake. I thought the cake could've been a little more moist. I couldn't really taste the earl grey flavour, nor could I pick up the rose flavour in the icing. My mom had their hazelnut dairy-free and soy-free ice cream, and sampling that I thought it was pretty good. (If you're curious, it appears the base that they use is coconut cream.) However, the ice cream was pretty soft when we opened it; perhaps the freezer isn't as cold as it should be? Maybe I just chose the wrong cupcake this time around. With so many other specialty flavours, along with seasonal ones, I'm willing to come back and give them another chance.

I have never purchased such a dry cupcake in my life. Gosh, even cupcakes I have purchased in the past have sat in my fridge for a few days and contained more moisture than the one I purchased from Phoenix Sweets. I had purchased the rose earl grey and the yuzu passionfruit. Both were incredibly dry, and I couldn't even taste the yuzu. Very disappointed in my purchase.

Come on....it's sugar any way you cut it! and what is not to like about sugar...right?…read more My husband and I simply stumbled in for a cupcake or two...OK OK, be actually bought 4! ACE UPSIDE: - The space is cute & clean! - The cupcakes themselves are cute! - They bake their items on sight and you can actually see the kitchen. I liked that a lot and thought that seeing the kitchen was a great marketing piece to Ace Cakery. This conjures up thoughts on all good things when baked from home and you feel that when you are there, because again, you can physically see the kitchen and see the staff baking. -The cupcake themselves (the cake part) was delicious and has the taste like you made them in your own kitchen. They have that "homemade/small batch" taste. -Although there website is under construction (indicating they would be back on line in Sept 2015), they can make cupcakes, wedding cakes, birthday cakes, customized cakes....they can do it all. ACE DOWNSIDE: - You know how with a great soup, it is often all about the broth. Well, with a cupcake, it is all about the frosting (in my humble, sugar induced opinion). Their cupcake frosting is a whimpy, light sugar frosting, not a big, bold, buttercream or something of the like! The frosting part did nothing for the homemade tasting goodness of the batter below it. - I know cupcakes are small, but these seemed kind of particularly small. - I would have confirmed that they have maybe other frosting options, but the girl behind the counter only spoke marginally good English and as stated above, their website is under construction, so I can not see if there are other frosting options. Maybe light sugar based frosting is your thing? As such, maybe this will be the cupcake of your dreams! The whimpy frosting just did not do it for me. The place is cute though and who knows, I might try again. If someone consumes a buttercream frosted cupcake from Ace, please let me know!

Sift makes what I think are the best cupcakes in Hong Kong. I've never been a fan of cupcakes…read morepreviously because I found them way too dry and 'cakey', like a badly baked cake from a generic box of cake mix - but Sift changed that. At $28 a cupcake (used to be $25 a few months back), Sift's prices are comparable to other cupcake stores. For example, Kisses Cupcakes sells 'standard' flavors at $25 and 'signature' flavors at $30. I've tried quite a few flavors at Sift, like their famed Red Velvet, Smores and Oreo. I love that their cupcakes are filled inside, so the cupcake is actually moist and not dry at all. The flavors aren't too sweet either, and the extremely smooth and creamy frosting on top complements the cake perfectly. It's hard to decide, but I would say my favorite flavor is the Red Velvet. My first time trying their Red Velvet cupcake was my first time trying anything that's Red Velvet flavor, so I wasn't sure what to expect. My friends told me that Red Velvet is basically chocolate, and it is - but so much better. I was skeptical of how cream cheese would taste good with chocolate, but the cream cheese frosting actually adds a really nice touch to the cupcake and kind of brings out its flavor. Even though Sift is known for its cupcakes, you shouldn't ignore their pastries! I've tried their lemon tart, and it's a perfect blend of tangy and sweet flavors. The lemon has a slight menthol taste to it, making it very refreshing. If you're a fan of cupcakes, Sift is a must-try - and if you're not a fan of cupcakes, doesn't matter because you will be after trying Sift!

They…read morehave made it cool for adults to eat cupcakes, which is good as I can now stop hanging out at kids parties - kids get all the best cakes. Sift is simple. The biggest sellers (or certainly the only thing I seem to buy from them) are their cupcakes with a variety of yummy icings. They do have other cakes and fancy bits; macaroons, cookies, cheesecakes, and pasties like mille feuilles and tarts, but its really the cupcakes that they excel in. The cupcakes are made with the finest ingredients including valrhona chocolate and french butter, and topped with some very inventive little icing swirls. My current favourites are banana foster, lemon meringue, toffee apple, and coconut. To be fair, they are not the cheapest things in the world at HKD28 each, but well worth every single lovely bite! I find them particularly useful for office birthdays, as you can get a bunch of different flavours. Just incase your boss hates chocolate (yep, bosses are mental). They also do a gluten free option. And as an added bonus, if you are far from home, they will provide ice packs to keep your cakes cool from the HK heat. However, I never find they last long enough for me to get them home!

From the name you know it is good. Natural, homemade cupcakes…read more Located in CC Wu building in Wanchai, this cupcake specialty has soon become a popular place for offices to order teatime snack or "farewell treats" (散水餅). For every cupcake, the crowing jewel would be the frosting on top; most often this is the part people will often lick off leaving the cake base below untouched. Due to the home made nature of them cakes, you guessed it, the frosting is hand piped on each and every cake. For special occasions, they also take catering orders and will pipe out the patterns your hearts desire; pretty neat for a birthday or even weddings I have to say. While for the cakes, it was quite buttery; so if you are a fan of butter (apparently I am not one of them), you might enjoy the cake a bit more than i do; also due to the butteriness of the cake, it is rather moist in texture which is quintessential for a good cupcake. Beautify as the frosting might be, I was not particularly impressed by the taste. Rather than being gooey and sweet, the frosting is more like a dollop of softly whipped cream. It is technically not a frosting as icing sugar is not added to the mix and despite the pretty appearance, it does not complement the cake. The oiliness of the topping also makes the cake unpleasingly heavy. Nonetheless, I have to give it to their willingness to use all natural ingredients for the cake; if they can change their recipe for their frostings, it would be perfect~
