I don't know. Maybe bc I'm from New York so his attitude doesn't bother me. He's not the most chatty guy but he knows what the heck he's doing. Totally saved my daughter when she was a toddler and now that she's an adult he's still completely on top of everything. I think he is 100 times better than someone else we used bc she was closer to our house. I would go to him just expect him to tell it to you straight. read more

Unfortunately it's irresponsible for him to continue seeing patients. He could continue research but his ability to communicate with patients has deteriorated. He could not answer simple questions like what the allergy scale is, if we should try other tree nuts, how we know if she outgrows her allergy, when to use the epi pen, etc. It made the whole process that much more overwhelming. He was mean to my daughters, and he even tried testing her skin test for allergens she doesn't have and not the ones she does have! The nurse wasn't knowledgeable about their mistake and didn't apologize. And then we all got colds from their filthy office. read more

Bedside manner lacking - AGREED. I also heard this from two friends, but it was, unfortunately, after the fact. You can get an appointment almost immediately. That should have been a warning. He abruptly dismissed my feedback about my son's symptoms - in front of my son. Did not explain complicated issues, even with repeated requests for clarification. Accused me of not asking about something when I did. Did not listen well. He had his nurse about to test for a food my son eats daily and has no issues with. (She was fantastic, btw - so I'm giving one star for that.) He did not acknowledge repeated comments about my sons diet. read more

Great allergy doc!!! All the low star/ratings for reviews are given because of Dr. Twarog's "lack of bedside manner". THAT IS CRAP.... He is extremely polite. He is old school, direct, and tells you what you need to hear. EX: you have allergies to cats, and you have cats at home. He would probably say "get rid of your cats"... he tells you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear. I am sick of people going to doctors and getting upset / annoyed when the doctors tells them what they don't want to hear, they get upset. Grow up people. I would love to hear someone say they have a doctor who takes personal calls himself in the morning before the office opens. That is amazing! We received a copy of the notes he sent to my wife's primary care physician; it was incredibly thorough and complete. Both my wife and I, who work in the medical field, were very impressed, and would recommend him for anyone with allergies. Great doc, and very nice medical staff!! read more

Dr. Twarog is one of the most direct doctors I've ever met and usually while I appreciate that in most people. It really puts his bedside manner at an all time LOW! I've been a patient of his on and off for a couple of years and I've decided finally not to go back to him. Unforunately I have a lot of allergies, and not least of all to dogs, cats, and dust. Of which cats and dust reside in my apartment. Dr. Twarog has a way of making me feel like I'm 3 years old and don't know how to think for myself. He told me during my first appointment that I needed to get rid of my cats. I so think NOT! He also prescribed very expensive medications, and told me that I need to get hypo allergenic covers for my mattresses and pillows all of which are expensive. Unfortunately I can't afford a lot of these things, and when I've gone back and to see him and he finds out that I haven't taken the medication (because I couldn't afford it) or a taken month or so longer to see him than the recommended three months I get a lecture. Another time a person showed up late for an appointment for a shot and it was in another room and Dr. Twarog refused to administer the 2 second shot because the guy was late, among other reasons. But I could clearly hear the conversation through the closed door and I'm sure they may have heard it out in the lobby. Totally not professional. Needless to say I'm looking for a new allergist. read more

If Yelp existed a few decades ago, I would have written a very positive review of Dr. Twarog's help with my allergies. For that reason, I felt confident having him consult with my young adult child who is experiencing unexplained allergic reactions on top of being very anxious. He provided no answers or treatment plan or followup. Gave the patient no information to take home. I saw a negative review from 2010 wondering why he hasn't retired, and it seems tragic to be wondering the same thing 11 years later. read more

Hi, I was liking the positive reviews this doctor received and considered him for the continuing allergy care for my child. I tried calling the office numerous times, when I got a VERY LONG phone recording indicating that I should call back during office hours which were listed as being from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm (with a 1.5 hour break mid-day!). I was calling during an afternoon time, but definitely INSIDE the listed office hours but got transferred to the call center - they told me that the office hours on Thurs and Fri were really until 3:30. I asked the call center contact to have the office update their recording to reflect the correct hours. A week or so later I tried calling again, remembering that the day of my call was NOT on a Thurs or a Friday, and knew that the office would be open for a simple appointment scheduling THIS time. When I finally got through to a live person, and told her that I was looking to just set up an appointment, she indicated that the office was closed early today - again not a change reflected in their voicemail in any form; and offered to transfer me to their Concord office if this was an emergency. Uh, did you not just listen to me? I reminded her of the voicemail message and how several times now that the office was closed DURING stated office hours. I also mentioned that I'll be taking my business elsewhere because they clearly weren't looking for my business (which constitutes their livelihood by the way). This office clearly does not know much about customer service; but knows how to LOSE customers. So, buh bye! Update on 10/24 - I tried again, once again, DURING office hours (3.25) and once again they were closed - apparently they close at 2:00 but do not bother telling their clients in the voicemail. I had already transferred our business to another doctor, this call was regarding the medical records info that i'd already paid for weeks ago, but that they haven't bothered to send along. Bad physician practice, what a shame. At this rate they'll have to close up shop soon. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Twarog's for about 20 years. He saved my life on many occasions when I was a child, and helped me find the right dosage of medication until the happy day when I was finally able to go off the oral medication I'd been taking since infancy. My family and I will forever be grateful to him. read more

Bad Bad Bad, I have been going to see him for three years and honestly I should have stopped seeing him after my 2nd appointment. Beyond RUDE, clearly someone who has been practicing for a while......hard to imagine he started out this way. When I had a question about my bill he yelled at me and told me "this is not a free clinic"...not sure how to take that. He double billed my insurance but that is a whole other complaint. The nurses are bad as well, they are about the same age as he is roughly 70's still not a reason to be unprofessional. The office professional standard or lack of it is shocking, the standard is coming from the top! I have told the nurses on several occasions NOT to treat me like I am a 5 year old which they continued. Today's visit went to a new low, the nurse actually started waving her hands in front of my face....seemed like the start of a street fight...odd. When you complain he defends them, why not??? Well I have a surprise for them.... I actually have been taping them for some time and this is after I endured insults, rude and degrading comments...and today I told him that I have all of this on tape. The Dr. followed me out to the waiting room, shouted out in front of little children, which created an uncomfortable situation for them and demanded that I come back to his office. Luckily not wanting to cause any discomfort for the children in the waiting room I managed not to react as he is pointing his finger in my face. Need I say more to any of these comments that give this man who should have retired years ago more than one star.....honestly he deserves zero stars.....The Youtube video will be out shortly, thank goodness for modern technology! read more

Possibly the best doctor I have ever consulted. I was aware of the fact that he may come across as "he has no personality" as some put it, but that is irrelevant. He was always kind to me, without being overzealous. He listens, thinks and cares. He was able to make suggestions that, although not pertaining to his field, helped me cure my condition. My health and quality of life has improved tremendously because of his unmatched knowledge and thoroughness. read more

Dr. Twarog is the best! He solved my allergy/asthma issues when I was a kid and I still go to him. I like the fact that he's candid about how to care for yourself and what to avoid. If you're allergic to animals, he'll straight up tell you it's not a good idea to have them .I don't see a problem in that. Also, there have been times trying to get to the office, where I got stuck in light cycle traffic on Rte 9. A quick call to the office from the car to tell them I'd be 10 minutes late was appreciated and understood. Common courtesy, people. read more

I had to wait 3 months for an appointment to consult with Dr. Twarog, for dibilitating allergic symptoms. The day of my appointment, I was accidentally late by 25 minutes (my husband says 20 and they claim "well over 30 minutes"), due to road closures I was not aware of, and when I arrived at the office, I was told "You need to reschedule." Their first available appointment was 3 months from then. There was no apology, no explanation other than "The doctor runs on time." My appointment would have run short, because my pregnancy would keep them from doing full testing (they're normally 90 minutes). I was outraged and upset. Talk about terrible customer service. Stay away from Dr. Twarog's office! They don't care about their patients. read more

Dr. Twarog was my allergist, and I went through full allergy testing, etc, and had no issues. I do not believe I was supposed to go back to him regularly, unless I was having issues, and they certainly never contacted me to do so. However, recently I had a severe allergic reaction. When I called, they told me I hadn't been there for a while, and so my file was archived, and I was considered a new patient. When I explained my situation, which was an urgent care issue, and not life threatening, she told me I could have a new patient appointment in 3 months, and to go to the ER for allergy help. So much for establishing any kind of history or relationship - unless I have allergic emergencies, apparently I can't receive allergist help from Dr. Twarog. The person who answered the phone was extremely unsympathetic and saw nothing wrong with this system. read more

Dr twarog is fantastic. He is exceptionally knowledgeable, makes himself available on short notice in emergencies, remembers my history and isn't afraid to use his expertise to commit himself on questions where other allergists prefer to hedge. Couldnt be happier to have him as my doctor and recommend highly! read more

I am pretty surprised at the reviews I have read about Dr. Twarog and his staff. He is by far the BEST allergist in the Boston area. He has been rated one of the top allergist in several health magazines. I have been a patient of Dr. Twarog since I was 10 months old. If it wasn't for his expertise, I would not be here right now. He saved my life and I am forever grateful. Dr. Twarog and his staff are VERY profession. They care about the well being of every patient that comes through the door. I have to say they are very honest with their patients and sometimes it's not what we want to hear like being told we have to get rid of a special cat or dog. They say it because they care and want the best for their patients. I think there an unbelievable group of people who care and would recommend them to anyone who has chronic Asthma like myself or any type of allergy. I do not agree with any of the other reviews. read more

As others have noted, Dr. Twarog's bedside manner is non-existent. He is fairly hostile to his patients, and has unreasonable policies that are not adopted by other allergy practices. (as an aside, and this is certainly not his fault, the parking garage for his practice is one of the worst-designed in all of Boston- the spaces and driving lanes appear to have been designed for Mini-Coopers, and of course the cars parked there are all huge SUVs. I've actually gotten stuck there trying to get around a corner blocked by large cars on either side of the aisle). Although I no longer want to see Dr. Twarog and am in fact seeing a different allergist now, I still need to get my allergy serum from his practice (they have a different mixture of tree pollens than the one used by my new allergist). Although they are willing to sell it to me, they will do so ONLY if I see him once a year (so I have to see him AND my real allergist). read more

My daughter is a patient of Dr. Twarog and he was the second specialist we were sent to see. I found his office to be quite helpful and I have to disagree with other posters who say he doesn't care about his patients. I say this because he was very thorough and gives his patients his personal cell phone number for questions and emergencies. I found the office well equipped to deal with a not so thrilled infant which included videos and books while we waited for test results, etc. I would recommend Dr. Twarog to fellow parents. As I said, he was the second specialist we were sent to and in comparison to the first allergist, Twarog was first-rate. read more

Very knowledgeable and thorough. Make sure you ask questions and describe all your symptoms. Nursing staff are wonderful and very friendly! Was just at Brookline practice yesterday but will transfer my son to Concord. read more

I saw Dr. Twarog for a problem with hives that started last Fall. I had waited a little bit too long to call the doctor and by the time I called, I needed to be seen quickly. The office staff was so accommodating and fit me right in. He was thorough, professional and extremely knowledgeable and helped me diagnose the mystery hives right away. He followed up quickly with lab work and I was able to get my prescription coming out of my appointment and haven't had issues with hives since. My overall experience with him, as well as the office staff was extremely pleasant and I have recommended him to many other people in need of an allergist. It is no surprise that he is so highly regarded in the Boston area! read more

I feel compelled to write a review about Dr. Twarog because we had such a great experience with him and I am shocked by some of the other reviews. Our 18 month old daughter had to be rushed to the ER after a severe allergic reaction and our pediatrician recommended we see Dr. Twarog. We had an appointment within two weeks and every person we spoke to at their Brookline office was courteous and informative. Dr. Twarog was very kind and considerate, he asked us a lot of questions and listened to everything we had to say. He is the only doctor who has ever managed to examine our daughter without making her cry, she even gave him a high-five on her way out! After the appointment, a nurse showed us how to use an Epipen and gave us useful brochures and videos. We then had blood drawn downstairs at the Quest Diagnostics. Not long after the appointment, we received a copy of the letter he sent to our pediatrician, describing the visit and his evaluation. Within two weeks a nurse called us with the test results. I am very impressed with the thoroughness and professionalism of everyone at this clinic and highly recommend Dr. Twarog. read more

I have known Dr. Twarog for forty years. I am 50 years old. Dr. Twarog treated me for allergies as a teenager. My 16 year old son, who has asthma, has been Dr. Twarog's patient for over a decade. Dr. Twarog has controlled my son's asthma successfully with an asthma action plan including several medications. Under Dr. Twarog's care, my son has has recovered, quickly, from several serious respiratory problems (resulting from flus and pneumonias) that my son's pediatrician (who is a top pediatrician) has been not been successful treating prior. Whenever my son has an emergency respiratory issue, Dr. Twarog staff fits my son into his schedule. We are so fortunate our son is his patient. Dr. Twarog is a world-renowned expert in the fields of asthma and allergy medicine. His staff is always receptive to our calls and concerns. Dr. Twarog is professional, caring, and a brilliant asthma-allergy specialist - among the best in the world. read more

I wanted to wait until after my second appt to write a review since there were some reviews here that weren't that great for Dr. Twarog. While I will agree that some of the hours are odd (I still don't know what they are) I think he tries to be available through call hours although I always forget to call. He must be a good doctor since it seems like it's so hard to get an appt with him. My first appt was very thorough and he fixed my issues and was very knowledgeable. Very professional, not overly friendly but I'm okay with that. Second appt was good as well. I know he runs on a schedule so try not to be late! Overall I am happy that he asks the right targeted logical questions and have solved my allergy woes.... from someone who's never had any allergies and now they are awful during the spring season I am glad to have found him! Just remember he's a doctor, doesn't need to be your friend. Right? read more

3 of our family members were patients of Dr. Twarog and we found his cookie cutter approach to allergies harmful. We later learned that we were living a deficient rental housing that was contaminated with hidden toxic mold and had become hypersensitive to many triggers. The standard starting point in the Brookline offiice at the time was to advise encasing all bedding, with no noticeable effect. I went further removing everything possible from the sleeping areas, using a hepa vacuum and hepa air filter. This helped our breathing but not or hives, bloody noses or early speech development concerns, and reactions to antibiotic. We were told to remove our 18 year old cat from our home. I could not and chose to bath him regularly instead. Then we hired Gordon Mycology Labs and learned that our rental home had been flooded previously, had hidden leaks and was contaminate. Within weeks of relocating everyone got better. Our cat died a natural death. my infant outgrew his swollen respiratory track and we never had hives again, not even to the same antibiotic. After Hurricane Catrina Allergist were able to connected the link between mold and asthma. Dr Twarog never apologized. My infant son suffers from severe eczema and at the suggestion of his dermatologist, I scheduled an appointment with an allergist. I called Dr. Twarog's office and was given an appointment within two weeks. I arrived on time and was seen immediately which was great. Most doctors' offices will leave you waiting for at least half an hour. I appreciated his promptness, especially with a 19-month old who was nearing nap time. Maybe because my father and brother are both doctors, I did not find Dr. Twarog to be hostile or demeaning. He was thorough, yes direct, but not condescending and was very kind to my obviously terrified son. The office staff was great and besides the parking garage being ridiculously tight (which is NOT the doctor's fault), I was very pleased with my experience. My only criticism would be that I was not told not to give my son any liquids other than water on the day of his appointment. I was told by one of the nurses as he sucked away on a sippy cup of juice that he shouldn't be drinking anything to could potentially cause an allergic reaction. I explained that had I been told that, he certainly would not be drinking any juice. Otherwise, we will be going to back to Dr. Twarog in 6 months, as he suggested, to follow-up on one of my son's allergies. I should also mention that as someone who is superficially impressed by credentials, I was thrilled to see that Dr. Twarog is an associate clinical professor at Harvard Medical School, and on the medical staff at Children's Hospital in Boston. I would definitely recommend him. read more
