This is a great way to introduce ballet to your little ones. I started my daughter out at a traditional ballet school and it just didn't have what we needed (she was 3 yo). Then we switched her over to Tutu School and her engagement level and excitement about ballet really picked up. They do a really great job of teaching ballet in a fun and imaginative way, with props, storytelling, coloring, bubbles, etc. Even teaching ballet techniques in silly, creative ways that a 3 or 4 year old would understand. The teachers are super patient and very kind with little ones. The bi-annual recitals are the best - they are very organized and make it a fun experience for the kids and families. She stayed from 3.5 - 5.5 years old and we are so glad she had this experience. Now she's moving on to a more advanced ballet school and was able to build the technique and confidence at Tutu. read more

We did a trial class at 9:30 am, she was the only student which I was nervous about at first because she's more on the shy side & had never done anything like this. Her instructor, Allie, was so kind, sweet, & patient. Since my daughter is 18 months, it's easy for her to lose interest in activities quickly. Allie, went from stretches, to popping bubbles with fairy Wands, dancing with scarves/ribbon, marching back & forth all within the 45 minutes to keep her engaged & active. I was hesitant at first to bring my daughter in at her young age but it was worth it. We enrolled our 18-month-old in this class without knowing how it would go. She's still learning to follow directions, but the teachers do a fantastic job guiding the toddlers and keeping the class engaging. My little one absorbs a lot just by watching, and I've noticed her trying some of the moves at home. Each session, she seems a little more focused, which is so fun to see! Our daughter loves Tutu School! She started in the toddler class at 2 years old, and we have been amazed to see her progression through various class levels over the last three years. The class structure is the perfect mix of fun and age-appropriate instruction in a low stress environment. The teachers all do a great job engaging each child and making them feel special. Our daughter especially adores Miss Cora for her enthusiasm and technical teaching skill. In addition to the weekly classes, we have also participated in the semiannual Bravo Bash recitals, which brought our daughter's ballet enthusiasm to the next level. At first, we were nervous our daughter would find the recital to be overwhelming, intimidating, or scary, but we were surprised what a positive, joyous, low stress experience it was. If I could give zero stars, I would without hesitation. The teacher overseeing my daughter's class was not only racist but incredibly impatient. Every week, I would receive emails filled with complaints about my daughter needing to use the restroom during class. It all reached a breaking point when the teacher handed out stickers with different fruits on them to all the children, except my daughter, who was the only black student, received a sticker of a gorilla scratching his head with the words "I'm confused" printed on it. Furthermore, the teacher consistently displayed a negative attitude and gave my daughter dirty looks throughout the classes. I promptly removed my daughter from that toxic environment and demand a refund. Never again will I subject my child to such blatant discrimination and disrespect. Tutu is a great way to start ballet. Our daughter has been attending classes for a few months. She looks forward to coming here every week. We know other parents from her preschool who goes to other Tutu's, everyone loves it. The Berkeley location is very convenient, easy parking. Ms Melissa is great with kids. She makes each class interesting and engaging. Class starts with floor warm up, sometimes with barre work, dancing across the floor exercise. We had a mostly great experience with Tutu school. That said, my daughter dropped out because she wasn't enjoying it anymore. But all stories must start at the beginning: We discovered Tutu school completely by accident in September of 2017. We walked by during Solano Stroll, and a pretty young ballerina asked my daughter if she wanted a free sticker. Of course she followed her back to the booth for a sticker, as well as a free tutu tattoo. We learned that Tutu School had just recently opened in Berkeley. They were conveniently located, and the class sizes were very small. LOGISTICS: Signing up and attending is clear and simple. Registration is always open, and you sign up 1-month at a time, with no further commitment. The price seems competitive and fair. If you miss a class for any reason, you can attend as many makeup days as you need during the same month. You can also request a free trial before signing up. Classes are 45 minutes long, divided by age, and are available 7 days a week at various times (check the website for the calendar). Tutu School focuses on children aged 18 months up to age 8. We very much appreciated that this is NOT a formal strict ballet academy. The primary focus is on movement and music and storytelling, and less on achieving perfect form. That said, they do teach classical ballet positions and motions, and my daughter now knows a dozen French words that she didn't know before, including how to perform tendu, jeté, passé, échappé, pas de chat, and of course arabesque. Parking in this neighborhood can be tricky. We've had good luck finding 2-Hour free parking in front of the church on Catalina Ave. TEACHERS: Our daughter started out in the 3-4 year old class with Teacher Heather. I never saw for myself, but my wife and daughter report that Heather was amazing, both as a dancer, and as a teacher. She floated gracefully through the studio, and was able to keep the kids in rapt attention. And if one of the kids was not able to focus or behave, she would send them out of the class. We were excited when our daughter turned 5 and was finally old enough for the 5-year-old class. She's attending TK and growing accustomed to interacting with bigger kids. The older class was taught by Teacher Melissa, who was also graceful and kind, but wasn't able to get the same focus from the kids. Even with only 3 or 4 other kids in the class, every class in December and January was disrupted by girls jostling for position, arguing over who stands where, fighting over who gets the silver (or pink or purple) wand, or just talking out of turn. Practicing for the Winter Performance was the hardest for the students to focus on. I believe this was because the teacher hadn't fully memorized the routine, and because the girls were struggling to learn the various parts. By the end of last year, our daughter was no longer enjoying ballet classes at all. We convinced her to stick with it through January to see if it gets better after the recital was over, but it didn't get better. We did raise our concerns with the teacher, but did not see much improvement. We would have gone back to the 3-and-4-year-old class that she loved, but unfortunately Teacher Heather has moved to private practice and is no longer with the school. My recommendation to Tutu school is to keep the owner engaged and to train the teachers to be more comfortable and confident in demanding the kids attention and respect. Act more quickly to kick kids out for the day if they're disrupting the class. read more

Tutu school is amazing for my three year old! She started at two in the parent-child classes (which I called "ballet-themed playtime," and which really helped establish her love of the idea of ballet and ballet class, and the start of her ability to follow directions). She's since moved on to the next level up (in which parents just watch), and it's starting to look a bit more like a real ballet class but is still a ton of fun for the kids so they keep wanting to go back. As someone who lost interest in ballet after my first class because it was too focused on learning the fundamentals and not on having fun or actually dancing, I love that Tutu School strikes a great balance (which is to say, mostly on the fun side because that's what's best for three year olds!). read more

So appreciative that there is a ballet school that takes kids under 3- nowhere else I looked had this. My 2.5 yo daughter asks every day if she can go to ballet. At this age level it is parent participation, so be aware of that. They also do a lot more than just ballet, including parachute play, story time and coloring. Bubbles are always a hit. In my 4.5 years old daughter's own words, "the teacher was very nice". Beautiful space. It is still new so the class size is small. The flexibility for make up classes is great!
