When I found Turtle Rabbit and Karuna, who runs the therapy and delivers the treatments, pain was destroying my life. After 2 months in a walking boot to treat a bad stress fracture in my left foot, I could barely walk. My left foot was completely locked up with arthritis and stiffness and the rest of my body was compensating, creating pain no matter what I did. To complicate issues, I have chronic migraine disorder. Between my foot and my migraines, pain was always with me. Initially, when the boot came off and I learned I could not walk, let alone exercise without significant pain, I sought out physical therapy at a traditional sports clinic. I started going to Turtle Rabbit about 6 months after my ACL reconstructive surgery on my left knee. I initially resisted going to physical therapy but my sessions at Turtle Rabbit have made a significant improvement in my mobility, ability to exercise and indulge in adventure - Karuna is extremely knowledgeable, patient and pleasant to work with. After seriously injuring my back at work, I could hardly move and was leaning to the right; could not sleep, walk straight, drive, etc.. I Did an MRI and the doctors suggested to meet with a back surgeon. They also suggested some physical therapy "in the meantime". When I went to Karuna after badly injuring myself from a HIIT class at the gym. I got rhabdomyolysis, rhabdo for short. It's something that I found out later was common in CrossFit circles. Anyways, it basically happened because I was doing TOO DAMN MUCH! Going to Turtle Rabbit healed up the puffy arms I got from the rhabdo and a host of other injuries I had acquired from aggressive physical activity. Karuna totally exceeded my expectations as to what PT was about. I showed up with limited range of motion and some pain in both shoulders due to years of surfing and lack of stretching. After our first session the range of motion increased significantly. I was very impressed. Not only that but I can't remember the last time my shoulder joints felt so open. If you are researching reviews to find a physical therapist, the short version is that this is the best physical therapy experience I have ever had. After working with Karuna, your mind and body with thank you. The longer is version is this - I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in early 2019. As with most autoimmune disorders, pharmaceuticals are usually the initial treatment. After researching the condition and treatment options, one of the suggestions was physical therapy. Putting this aside, I explained to my RA doctor that I was not seeing results from the initial prescribed medication. More medication (with greater side effects) was the next course of action. While I was disappointed, I knew in my heart that there had to be a better way to seek relief and treatment. One of my long-term concerns was my ability to continue to stay physically active and in particular, play golf well into my later years. Much like you may be doing now, I started reading the reviews of physical therapists in the area. First of all, Karuna was one of the first practitioners to call me back within one business day. Secondly, I was able to find times that worked within my schedule and was also able to be seen much sooner than other PT offices. I rarely write reviews on Yelp, but it's hard not to when you work with and know Karuna! After climbing for a few years with little to no injuries, I started experiencing knee pain and discomfort that I couldn't get rid of or heal myself after about a year of trying. So I went to Kaiser (my healthcare provider) to see if their PT department could help. I was only offered one appointment where I was quickly assessed and given a few exercises to try out at home. Knowing that I needed something or someone to hold me more accountable than that and help me assess my progress, I called the Kaiser office back to see if I could get some consistent PT appointments, and they basically told me that I was young and healthy and they couldn't provide additional help. I almost stopped looking after that, but decided to see what else was out there (also after setting up an HSA account through my job, of course!). I found Karuna on Yelp and basically picked it because it was close to my house and had good reviews. Little did I know that I was about to have a life-changing experience with Karuna. I definitely expected the typical space you picture when you think of a PT office: a gym-like room with exercise equipment, medicine balls, weights etc. To my surprise, I was greeted by a cozy office and friendly faces. Karuna works in one room with a massage-like table and uses her hands and laser therapy to improve the flow in your body and basically work magic. I always walk out of my sessions feeling excellent. It took me some time to completely understand and adopt Karuna's integrative approach (though a history of yoga, meditation and an open mind definitely helped), but her explanations of the idea behind her practice during each session greatly helped me understand what she was doing and how I had an important role in the process. By combining thoughtful breathing, simple exercises, patience with your body, a positive attitude and Karuna's healing hands, I was able to make incredible progress with my body. I learned how to listen to my body's needs and treat myself on my own (to the best of my ability). I knew when to hold off on certain activities, how to sit at work, when to do what exercises and how to integrate this practice into all aspects of my life. After a few months of therapy with Karuna that lead to the amazing results I never could have imagined, she referred me to a Gyrotonics specialist (google it) named Sam who helped me not only ensure that the pain wouldn't return or persist, but also trained me on how my body is meant to move, be treated and most of all, strengthened. She and Karuna are close business partners as well who treat/work with each other, so they were constantly in touch about my progress, which really made me feel cared for. The greatest takeaways from this experience with Karuna and Sam were that I now feel like I know my body so much better and can treat different issues appropriately. I also have a different attitude about my body and always make sure that I am not pushing myself too hard but also not being too lazy to work on my issues - the most important thing is to listen to your body. I've been working with Karuna for approximately 1 year to heal what presented itself as a hip injury. I'm super excited to share more about my experience. For context, I'm a very active female in my mid twenties. I've worked with traditional exercise-focused physical therapists to heal previous injuries like a lower back muscle sprain and a torn ACL, both from my former life as a soccer player. When this new pain started in my hip as a result of interval running, I made an appointment with an exercise-focused PT in San Francisco, because that's worked for me in the past but I wasn't happy with the therapist. He prescribed helpful strength building exercises, but he didn't seem to really listen to my words or my body so I stopped visiting that practice. And then, I found Karuna! I will admit that I was hesitant about Karuna's approach because it wasn't as physically demanding as I understood physical therapy to be. However, the voice inside of me told me to give this a chance because I was extremely impressed with her ability to listen, her knowledge of anatomy and her connection between her hands and mind that allow her to feel slight inconsistencies in the body, like inflammation, tenderness and tightness. For both of us, this recovery was a challenging puzzle. It wasn't as simple as honing in on a single muscle and seeing dramatic results in 2-3 months. We started with the muscles directly touching my hip, but once inflammation and tightness started to disappear from that area, this revealed previously hidden problem areas like a core strength inbalance, super tight psoas muscles that were taking on the brunt of strain during aerobic activities, agitation in my lower back and super old residual pain in my sacrum. In addition to the applied physical therapy (massage and laser), Karuna helped me adjust my mental outlook, my diet, my emotions, and my exercise routine. This is where the word "integrative" really comes into play. Karuna made me realize that doing the right exercise, eating the right things and getting enough rest is not enough. If you're too hard on yourself or if you're storing negative energy, you're slowing your healing process. Emotional blocks are a real thing. Example 1: The final pain we were working to remove was the hip pain I felt while sleeping. We'd been working for weeks and weeks to heal this remaining 5% of daily pain. Then, I took a 2 week vacation where I was free of daily stress and the pain disappeared. Example 2: A few months ago I thought I was well enough to start running again, but the pain returned immediately the day after. The next time I went to see Karuna, her care and careful questions made a safe space for me to have a good and honest tearful cry over my frustrations, which ultimately I needed. Without that session, I wouldn't be where I am now. One year later, I'm back to running! My body is stronger now than it has been in almost ten years. I've been able to combine ALL of my previous activities (non- heated yoga, spin, running, free weight strength training) with some new activities (heated yoga, yoga balls to roll out my sacrum and psoas, a moist heating pad, regular notes in my own gratitude journal) in a pattern that is sustainable. I want to be honest so I will say that not every experiment we tried produced excellent results, but that's part of the process. If you're reading this, I would encourage you to visit Karuna though only if you're willing to (a) commit an open mind and (b) confront all of the parts of you that you keep bottled inside. I fractured my ankle (fibula) while skiing last December 2017 and because I have a long flight to the Philippines right after new year in January, my ortho wanted me to see a PT ASAP. I know I do not want the usual therapy cos I figured I can google and youtube exercises, so when I found Karuna, I was really satisfied and happy with the choice I made. I love how I felt at ease since the first time I meet her. I saw her for a few sessions before my 14 hour flight and although I didn't see a PT while on vacation for a month, I was secured knowing that Karuna has showed and taught me what to do to help recover faster from my injury and deal with pain. When I got back in March, I was cleared to put weight on the injured foot and was seeing Karuna 3-4 times a week. She helped me deal with the pain and learning how to walk again. By mid April, I was back to work (I am a nurse) and was on my feet for 8-12 hours 2-3x a week. It's now August and I am back to doing my favorite things, biking, hiking, backpacking and actually on sabbatical to travel for a year. I hope I don't get injured again but in case i will need PT in the future, I know where to go, not only did she help me be physically fit again but she was also my therapist by being so encouraging during therapy. My experience with physical therapy in the past left a lot to be desired. When I had issues with my knees for example, the sports rehab clinic just did a rotation of ice/heat/soaking/electrical stimulation. No stretching or working of the joint at all. And when that did nothing for me (surprise), they simply recommended that I quit the sport I loved and move onto something less strenuous. So, when I hurt my shoulder late last year (and had never had issues with my shoulder prior to that), I was pretty concerned. Very limited motion, with a lot of pain down through my elbow and into my wrist. I thought it started to get better on its own, but that was just because I was really careful with it. I had a huge wakeup call a few months later when I fell snowboarding and experienced really bad throbbing and deep aching constantly thereafter. I couldn't lift anything, couldn't sleep - and little things like having my dog barely pull on his leash while walking him were oddly painful. I visited Dr. Jennifer van Warmerdam (I also highly recommend), thinking that I would just get a cortisone shot and go on my way. She has a pretty conservative approach, which I appreciated, and recommended 6 weeks of physical therapy for capsulitis. She also gave me a list of recommended Physical Therapists, which included Turtle Rabbit. I was a little hesitant given previous experiences with PT, but was really glad that I took her advice - and really glad that I chose to work with Turtle Rabbit. There are a lot of things that I really like about Karuna and her practice, but here are the things that stood out for me: 1. She takes a holistic approach to your injury, and really understands how different areas of the body impact you and the area she is working on. 2. She did a phenomenal job of bringing down my pain level in the first session which gave me a great degree of confidence that I was working with the right person. 3. She was very clear that slow and steady wins the race - it will take some time, but I was far more likely to have a full recovery by working on a little bit at a time and testing out my range of motion and strength. 4. She utilizes a combination of eastern, western and modern techniques (including cold lasers) and taps into your awareness so that your body goes into a healing mode. 5. She did an awesome job of prepping me for upcoming activities that I thought might not have been possible - including a golf trip and heavy yard work. 6. She also has great insights into how other factors can positively or negatively impact your body's ability to heal. I really did think 6 months ago that I would be that person with a nagging shoulder injury for the rest of my life - dealing with pain on a constant basis, and worried about re-injuring myself. That couldn't be further from the truth. My shoulder feels great, I'm golfing again, and not worried in the least about straining or pushing it. I also agree with all of the other reviewers here; don't settle for a partial recovery!! A full recovery is definitely possible with Turtle Rabbit and Karuna if you have a little patience, work with the process, and follow her instructions. I had a very traumatic foot injury, which required surgery and left me with a lot of scaring as well as numbness due to the nerves being manipulated. Weeks after the surgery, my foot and ankle were not healing properly. Aside from the pain post surgery, the contusions and scars were "angry" looking and the foot was swollen with a sickly color, not to mention the throbbing that did not allow me to sleep at night. I decided to seek help with the healing and chose Karuna's services. She was very gentle and used lymphatic stimulation to help the area drain and get circulation. Immediately after the first visit my foot was "alive" again and it started to come back to normal. Everyone's got a bad back but mine got a whole lot worse after a summer of picking up grandchildren. I could hardly move when I got out of bed in the morning and any length of time sitting in a chair could bring on a big problem. I was feeling almost incapacitated -- and I had some international travel in a few months. I knew I needed help and after not getting it from my HMO which will go nameless here, all my intuitions were that Karuna would be the one. Karuna is a very nice, knowledgeable, and professional physical therapist. Her integrative approach and knowledge of eastern medicine provide a great complement to traditional physical therapy. I have a torn labrum in my hip which can't be fixed except by surgery, but I went in order to see if she could help it improve so that I don't have to go the surgical route. She did a few things that helped on a cellular level, increasing blood flow to that area so that my body can heal itself. I saw some improvement (which I honestly didn't expect) and when she'd done everything she could do, Karuna referred me to an acupuncture place that has been able to help as well. Overall I would recommend Karuna to anyone who needs a physical therapist. read more

This place likes to say it embodies wellness and healing but underneath is a sense of profit over healing ("First Wealth is NOT Health"). Treatment does not include a mandatory $55 charge on top of your co-payment to use a laser treatment that comes out of a flashlight looking device. There isn't any exercise equipment except for a massage table in the room and the place has an overall small footprint. Other physical therapy locations provide treadmills, pilates machines, weights and ice and electrical treatments post therapy at no extra cost. Eight years ago I injured my shoulder snowboarding and did nothing to take care of it until finally being diagnosed with multiple tendonitis problems (rotator cuff and bicipetal) a few years and much aggravation of the injury later. As the years went by and my efforts to help my physical issues proved insufficient I began to develop problems with the arm that wasn't involved in the original injury as I lived a life out of physical balance, always with one side compensating for pain in the other. For 3-4 years I went to see a chiropractor, which always seemed helpful but never got to the root of my problems. By the time I finally cracked and decided I needed the help of a physical therapist I was in constant daily pain; both my arms had a variety of pains, and now my neck and back were beginning to lock up. This is the point at which I discovered Karuna. Without insurance that would cover physical therapy, and simply looking for somebody that was in my neighborhood led me to the reviews on these pages. So it is fitting that I now add my voice to this chorus of stellar reviews that Karuna is compiling. I suspect that for each review that is written there are 10-20 success stories about Karuna's assistance that don't get logged. Turns out I was ignoring the natural warning signs that the body employs as messages to its owner - Karuna brought me more in tune with these messages, providing me with an ability to measure and control the pains I was feeling through a method of a "threshold" approach, which basically means that when pain is felt one has already gone too far with their activities. So for the first extended period of time since the original injury I stopped aggravating the problem and creating new problems. At the same time Karuna's integrated approach to therapy was put to work....she began by reducing the inflammation that had built up in multiple places. Within a couple weeks I was noticing improvement, and within a month I could tell we were on the right track. A large part of the process towards recuperation rest with me, and Karuna helped stress the importance of me making the lifestyle changes that would enable the healing to occur. I did, and along with her hands-on physical therapy and some basic exercises/stretches that targeted the problem areas, I truly began to heal. It took 2-3 months to get to 100%. I went from thinking that I had developed chronic tendonitis that was going to hamper me for the rest of my life, to being in perfect physical condition for the first time in the greater part of a decade. I'm a very active individual, so this means a ton, and I'm looking forward to being physically "free" during my rapidly approaching 40's. Thank you for helping me heal Karuna.
