I hired Joe M. Turner in June 2013 for a Yelp event, in fact. Since then - full disclosure - we've remained friends and professional peers but his talent and professionalism deserve some props! I had picked up a magician's business card at Eddie's Trick Shop in Marietta. I called the number and through a little back-and-forth, I was told the magician was going to be busy at a conference. Its a good thing, too, because THAT guy then referred me to Joe. Joe arrived to our Art Deco themed, 30s-era event at Earl Smith Stand theater at Marietta Square, on-time, clean cut and smiling in a white tuxedo. He set up a small table with information and a tall promotional sign, which is what we agreed on for this marketing event. Joe was one of a handful of entertainment acts hired for the party, and definitely a highlight. Throughout the evening he mingled among three floors and performed close-up magic to almost 300 attendees. Later, he performed a short, interactive set on stage; calling on a few volunteers, using fun props like metal rings, books, handcuffs, etc, and getting laughs with his humor. Oh, yes, he is also an engaging public speaker. He does keynote speeches and emceeing, and he even travels for corporate and private gigs often. So, when I found out he was performing a ticketed magic show at Jerry Farber's in Buckhead (Side Door at Landmark Diner) this Summer, I said, "hey! I can get in that door!" I had to go see his show again. I watched Joe do his thang again for a new group and the excitement and amusement from both him and the crowd was the same - so much so, that he was invited back for another show at Jerry's the following month. We recently hired Joe to perform during one of our company's bi-monthly meetings. We were incredibly impressed with his flexibility and professionalism as we hired him very last minute. Our production floor wasn't the most performance-friendly place (no ability to use music or large props), but you never would have noticed because Joe seamlessly carried the crowd as if he had performed in this exact situation hundreds of times. I'll be the first to admit that while I've never been a huge fan of magic, I am intrigued by the 'how' aspect. Unfortunately most of the magicians I have seen live either lack the 'wow' factor or their skill level is very basic. Joe Turner is not one of those magicians. This guy is a one-man entertainment juggernaut. I was at his show earlier tonight and left trying to wrap my head around how the hell he managed to do what he did. Every single trick or illusion from the opening leaves the audience wanting more...and Joe delivers every single time. He is the consummate professional as he could not be more comfortable in front of a live crowd, in turn putting his viewers at ease throughout the duration as his shows are very interactive with the audience. I was really impressed with how he remembered all of his volunteers' names when they were referred to later in the show. Joe's ability to poke fun at himself while seamlessly transitioning through his tricks was also very enjoyable. He even made himself available to speak with after the show and was extremely personable, tossing in an individual trick during each conversation with everyone. What the man can do with a deck of cards is honestly just plain ridiculous. Tonight was not the first show of his that I have seen and it definitely will not be the last. I would highly recommend Joe for any audience as we had a pretty diverse group tonight and judging by the crowd reaction and amount of participation, there was not a disappointed customer.
