After being on the road awhile, sometimes I get tired of restaurant food. Take it from someone who's traveled a lot on business the past few years! To tell you the truth, Rick and I are both good cooks and we don't mind splitting the kitchen chores. And generally the food you prepare yourself is way healthier than what you get dining out. Not to mention the cost factor either. We stocked up on meats, cereals, and the fruits that a type-1 diabetic needs to get through the day. It's a pleasant small town grocery store. Quality was good and so were the prices. Let's hope they don't get squeezed out by Walmart or some other mega chain.

Either way, I wanted to visit this grocery store and it was a good stop. It seems like a high-quality store, but the prices weren't unreasonable. In part I wanted to stop just to check it out but when I learned that Pennsylvania is the snack food capital of the country, that sealed the deal. They have an extensive bakery with lots of stuff, including some that I don't tend to see at a grocery store bakery, like the macarons that I picked up here. They also sell fudge, another unlikely grocery find. It's a grocery store, so of course they have what you're expecting to find, but their chip aisle did seem extensive. Or maybe that it's just that I've never seen flavors like honey jalapeño and others before. The staff was friendly and efficient. Shopping was pleasant. If I lived in the area this would be my go-to grocery store.

This was an oasis that took advantage of the nearby amusement park visitors. They do have some competition when it comes to food with a few fast food establishments nearby. With it being the only gas station it was congested and hard to maneuver in the lot. Actually it was equally hard to maneuver inside as well with the congestion. I did make sure that I was able to use the facilities and refuel myself for my drive back to the hotel. I got my usual iced tea and grabbed a snack or two. What took the longest here was the checkout line. It was long and slow moving. Probably because it is the easiest place to stop to pick up a last minute item, grab a bite to eat, use the ATM, etc. next to the amusement park. We have the Walmart app which if you use it right is cheaper than going to the store. I'm former law enforcement and I always carry in this store "if" I have to go. The staff is basically 90% of people who hate you and 10% who work part time and are happy. We always go to the other place with a red circle store 40 minutes away (with tons of restaurants)just to not deal with this mess unless there is something we need right away.

What I like about this Walmart vs. the Bloomsburg Walmart, is this store seems to have a better and more frequently restocked selection of items. The selection of items in the freezer section stands out. Where this Walmart loses out is due to being in a high theft area, a significant number of items are behind glass or locked up in some form. If a store does this, they need to have employees available at all times to come and get the items unlocked. This store does not seem to have those employees in the evenings to pull this off based on the roughly 10 minutes wait I had on a Friday evening. I left without the item. The self-checkout systems here are not as user friendly as other's I've seen, and the area to use them is constrained in space on the grocery side. This is also probably due to theft issues. Overall, I do like coming to this Walmart despite it being out of my way for the better selection compared to the Bloomsburg store.

Store is located just outside of Northumberland on Route 11, immediately next to the American Legion. Parking lot can get tight if the store is busy and it's built on a downhill slope, so unattended shopping carts can roll away. What will you find product wise? A decent fresh fruit/vegetable section. Frozen food section with a lot of discontinued products. Tons of canned good including bulk #10 cans. This location off season sells various fountain fireworks. They also have small kids toy selection. Compared to the Berwick store, this one feels like it has less stock in general. Why I knock a few stars off is you need to check expiration dates on EVERYTHING. No exceptions and at this store they are less well marked on items like cereal. Toiletries and other general pharmacy items are not competitively priced. Paper products have about the same quality as generic items at Dollar General (not great.) Overall, I like Surplus Outlet, and it's worth stopping in to see what they have.

The store is spacious for a discount grocer and had a large section of beauty and health products, more so than others. Many were damaged packaging or expired but that's to be expected. What I didn't expect was such a large and impressive freezer and produce section. Had I had more room in our travel trailer camper I would have bought a ton more! Prices were low and the selection was very broad and fully stocked. Ditto for the produce which looked to be in very good condition and not "seconds". Since discount grocers tend to carry discontinued products I did find several items I'll probably never find again, but at least I enjoyed them once! The staff on the floor was also helpful in directing me to the dept I was looking for. The cashier however had the personality of a slug, and when hubby and I tried to engage in conversation with her she made eye contact but no response. Four stars because although they had a cart wipe station the wipes were completely dried out. A sign at the door insisted there would be no entry unless masked. However a big family with a ton of kids (all touching stuff and a muck around the store) ignored the mask rule and were allowed entry. Also when I tried to go back Sunday on our way home to stock up they were closed. No Sunday hours is a huge let down.
