He said he was down the road paving a driveway and he was going to have some left over paving materials and he could resurface about half of my driveway at a great rate. My driveway was already paved so this would merely be asphalt applied upon the pre-existing surface. He offered me increasingly lower prices per foot which I would not agree to. I told him I would only negotiate on a final price. He then offered to do about half of my driveway for $6,000, I scoffed and he lowered the offer to $5,000. I accepted his offer and his crew quickly showed up. I would discover later, THIS WAS LIE #1. Before finishing up the agreed labor, Rick reappeared saying he would have more material available, enough to resurface the entire driveway. I said fine as long as he took care of me on the final price. Already agreeing to about half the area at $5K, I assumed the final total would be $10K-$12K. This was my mistake not pinning him down on the final amount but having already agreed on nearly half of the area, I thought the other side of the driveway should be close to the same price per area. Upon finishing the task, Rick broke out his measuring wheel and calculated my total - $15,985. I cut a check for this precise amount. Rick gave me a receipt for $15,900. This would lead to LIE #2. When I later called Rick to discuss the difference in my check and his receipt, he said he would return to my house and pay me the difference. When he came to my house he did, in fact, not pay me the difference. During this return visit, Rick could sense my frustration with the dishonesty and manipulation that took place. This led to LIE #3. Rick told me, "Don't worry, I've already put you on the schedule for a sealcoating in October." He was proud enough to declare, "that would usually run between 800-900 dollars." Having not heard from Rick by September, I started calling him to nail down the exact date of their seal coating visit. Frequently, the voice mailbox was full but I was able to leave several messages. Still, no reply.
