Best facility/apparatus, most clean, best location, parking, viewing spots for parents, and instructors, who really seem to care about teaching the kids. There aren't long waits to use the apparatus during classes like we've experienced at other gyms. The kids rarely stay idle. The front desk staff is friendly and tries their best to be accommodating with regards to getting you into the class time you're looking for. We've only been there a couple months but looking forward to seeing our daughter really grow in the sport!

Uh, yeah - free babysitting (up to 75 mins a day), and multiple family-based programs including activity nights, camps, and athletic class for the squirts. "Employees making sure you sign up for treadmills." I appreciate the 30 minute limit for high volume days, and the ability to sign up for a time block. Plus, their equipment is ultra-modern. I was doing sudoku, before running a simulated trail, and watching 20 clear channels of cable. Oh, and it's got Netflix! "Overly crowded!" Emilson charges $115 for a family membership - that's up to five people in a single household. They've got indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and a steam room, a spin studio, basketball and volleyball drop-ins, free group exercise programs, FREE BABYSITTING, a decent snack bar, a friggin' Sky Trail (think a four-story vertical obstacle course on a track), and more. These sort of amenities make for a huge draw, and subsequently, peak hour crowds. "Someone was putting mascara on in the bathroom." What can I say? Saturdays get crazy for me. It's no Equinox in amenities or exclusivity, but it's near perfect for us.

After noticing parents did not use consistent types of flotation devices for their kids to swim and not seeing any posted placards showing what was or wasn't allowed, I brought a flotation device for my son. I held my son the entire time he was swimming. Despite, this I was told that the device was not allowed because it was an inflatable device and could be punctured, however I had seen other kids with similar flotation devices previously. On the next visit, I brought a hard foam progressive swim pack (a belt wearable back float designed to help young children to learn to swim independently) for my son. Still holding my son to teach him to swim, I was denied again and told a different answer, the device needed to be coast guard approved. In the hour I had been at the pool I, however, still hadn't noticed any placards mentioning this Coast Guard rule nor had I had seen any other floatation devices inspected prior to use. I believe South South YMCA Hanover was deliberately targeting me. Being consistently the only Asian among white families - I wonder if that was what started the ordeal. I asked them why a widely used hard dense foam progressive swim pack, used at even their South Shore YMCA swim classes, could not be used and they provided me the same response that differed from the first response. I had asked if their lifeguard rescue tubes were coast guard certified and they could not show me proof - only that they felt it was widely accepted for use. In fact, their pool didn't have any visible coast guard approved lifesaving apparatus, a huge safety and insurance concern. Based on my experience with Aquatics Director Paul Kelly, I believe he needs to fired. I felt targeted and their inconsistent application of their own rule among patrons and even their own staff. I also felt they violated their core mission I had signed onto as a member. I don't believe they were caring, honest, respectful, nor showed the responsibility to nurture every child through their swimming development. My son now feels discouraged from swimming, asked how his flotation devices was any different than his peers. I have the burden to explain to him that we may have been unfairly targeted and that it was not his swimming nor his choice in flotation devices.

A climbing gym on the South Shore? A place where experienced climbers can practice, adults can try…read moresomething new, and kids can learn confidence while getting incredible exercise? Finally! The energy of this place is amazing. It's not as big as some of the marquee climbing gyms in Boston, but has a good variety of overhangs, roofs, chimneys and aretes, with a small bouldering cave about to open and future plans for significantly more bouldering. They have auto-belay devices on almost every route, which means that my 7-year old son and I can both climb at the same time. It took him a few visits before he was completely comfortable, but now he loves the autonomy of safely clipping in and virtually running up the walls. We spent 3 hours at Challenge Rocks one Saturday and a big chunk of that time was just me sitting down and watching him climb and enjoying the huge smile on his face. Speaking of smiles, I took a group of 40-something friends there over lunch one week. Everyone was apprehensive at first, but half an hour later everyone was smiling and high-fiving, including one friend who was very afraid of heights. I took a few photos so that the parents in the group could "prove to their kids that they went rock climbing." The owners - Fred & Grace - are super friendly and helpful, and most importantly, amazing with kids. After watching a bunch of 5-year olds having a blast at a climbing birthday party one Saturday, including time on a trampoline and zip-line, my 7-year-old son said "I am DEFINITELY having my birthday party here!" I love that this is a huge confidence boost for him, and a great place for this old trad climber to get back into an amazing sport after a 10+ year hiatus.

Thanks to the excellent training program that the team at Global Home Fitness and the trainers (Will Hansen and Gary Murphy) and the nutrition help from the staff nutritionist, (Jocelin Lamprey) , been able to really turn around my fitness. Before, I had tried trainers before at gyms and video programs, but with the travel time and inconvenience of going to a gym at the hours I need, nothing really worked. Finally finding an at home program really helped me create the discipline and schedule that worked for me, and with that the results finally appeared.
