When i went to Arts Umbrella from ages 10-12, it was easy to get a hold of management for any reason. There was always a manager in the building. The children there clearly enjoyed their classes, and the parents enjoyed how easy enrolment was, and seemed to enjoy the environment as well. Now? Turnover seems to be at an all time high, and management is impossible to reach. If you have a complaint, it will not be handled by management, rather the lovely Front desk workers that seem to clean up after this managers messes, and actually keep the place running. As I mentioned, I was an employee of Arts Umbrella. I took the role of Visual Arts Assistant, which meant doing all the busy work during and in between classes. I would like to add, i recieved no training, I simply signed my papers and they sent me in for my first day. The instructors i worked with? all absolutely amazing people. The lesson plans, energy, and enthusiasm were all top notch. The manager was, as i mentioned, nearly impossible to reach. She also is not interested in stepping up when were short staffed, and instead just let the instructors deal with it. I had no idea I was doing anything wrong until I was being fired. I got no feedback from my manager whatsoever. All of my coworkers said they loved me, and even the parents expressed how excited their kids were to see "Ms. Tessa". I was then given no shifts for Spring Break camps, and recieved a call a couple days ago that my employment was terminated on a "no-cause" basis. If you want to go somewhere that management actually values you as a person? Values your opinions? Even listens?This is not the place.

I really wanted to love this studio. The space is really amazing. But after about four months of…read morefull time membership, none of my projects were able to be glazed due to the really strange rules on glazing workshops and times. When I asked the assistants, and long term members, very few of them had successfully glazed projects either. I have worked in other studios and this isn't the norm. The lack of trust for members to be left unsupervised for any amount of time was difficult to contend with. We were all adults at the studio, who had extensive orientation to keep the space safe and tidy. But it was run like a prison. The doors are locked, and opening them for any reason, including other members usually led to being reprimanded. The owner also seemed to resent most of her clients, and talk quite unprofessionally to a captive audience of members most sessions. There was always a feeling you had to agree to everything she said since it was her space. In the end, it didn't feel like a community, it felt like sharing your kitchen with your landlord. The power dynamic never let up, and in the end I couldn't cook with them there. I hope this helps someone choose another studio.

Of course with all the hard work that it takes to make the glass sculptures, the prices of the glass artwork can be quite pricey, but for $35 you can schedule to come in to make your own blown glass flower. Note: I would NOT bring small children into this studio unless you enjoy buying broken glass. Leave the children at the Kid's Market and have your own fun... You deserve it... =) And as always.... Inside the store, many finished pieces fill the glass shelves and cases. Intricate vases some priced to the tune of $3000, bowls for $500 and earrings for a more affordable $50ish and tumblers for $30. For $35 there's a make your own glass flower workshop that looks pretty cool. I might have fallen for quite a few pieces, but fear of breaking even a simple pendant made me refrain... for now.
