What brought me and my partner here was a Groupon to make a few pieces and what we got from this was a lesson in making some simple ceramics that were not that simple when you actually get your hands into the clay and start making things. I have never made something like this, through my days of elementary and high school I may have painted but no cups or plates were made by me so this was a whole new experience. We booked our appointment to come in through John (the owner) and we sat with 5 other people on the night we came in. John has a flare of energy, and he spreads his knowledge about ceramics when you sit there, telling jokes and getting people to introduce themselves to break the ice in the air and to have fun with your creations. The package that we paid for was two items, one was a bowl or cup, the other was a creation of your choice, and each of us started with molding on own creations first. From dishes to plates he has a set of molds for you to get a defined shape from and it is up to you to shape the clay given into the creation of your choice. It may look easy, it may seem easy, it was not easy. From shaping, to cutting the excess clay off each creation it was fun, and gives you a whole new appreciation for people who are able to craft with this substance. The second part of the night here was getting on the rotating spinner and creating a cup or bowl like a scene from Demi Moore in Ghost. Until you try it, you do not know how hard this is for a rookie. There is definitely skill involved in crafting a circular moving object, cause you can turn this thing into a pile of muck if you do it incorrectly, and that is the easy part. There where times were I started seeing my bowl or cup start wobbling, and going south and looking like garbage, and that is where John comes to play and ask you if you want to save it, and he somehow has a way of adding enough water and bringing your creation back to respectable life. After we made shape of our creations, we left them there so that they could go into the oven and bake to make solid. John called us a few days later to come in when we have time to paint our items. So a second visit was in order, and another hour of painting to your hearts content on what shade you wanted your finished product to look. The whole process really shows a different artistic side to you, as what I thought I created wasn't the end result, but I was happy nontheless. After painting my plate and bowl, it was left again to be dried, and to add a clear coating so if you were to use it, it would be safe. John again phoned me to advise that my pieces of art were ready. Something fun to try, whether yourself, with a date, or in a group.

It was my first time to come with my friend, and paint the cute little piggy coin bank. The store owner, John is really nice and helpful to give some brief instructions on painting and explain the procedure of ceramic firing. Because I dripped too much water over the coin bank, it may cause bubbles within the ceramic. John promised to fire it for two times (first time to get water away, second time to set the right temperature for the ceramic). it was a fun experience and definitely I will come back again! Highly recommend!

I can't say enough great things about U Paint and the owner John. He's incredibly helpful and kind. When my dog received a terminal diagnosis, I purchased some clay from John and made a few paw prints. John fired them, I painted them, and they were fired yet again. They turned out so amazing and I'm very thankful to have had John's assistance and guidance. Another plus is that the pottery selection there is great and the prices you see (which are INCREDIBLY economical!!!) includes everything from the pottery piece to the paint and the firing. He also offers private classes for only $57 a pop (the classes will be spread out over 3 days to allow for firing, painting and the final firing). Do yourself a favour. Whether it's date night, a night with friends or something you'd like to do solo, check out U Paint!!! I'll definitely be back!!! Thanks John!!!

My friend and I had a great time for our first pottery class. John was a great instructor, he was patient, funny, and guided us through the process step by step. Can't wait to come back for our second session! FYI: They only accept debit or cash only.

I can't recommend this place enough! My partner and I came here for a COVID-friendly date and are so excited to go back. We sat outside and painted on a sunny day, so there was no need for masks. The prices are more than reasonable, the selection of ceramics and paints are great, and the atmosphere is fantastic. Like all the other reviews say, John is lovely! This is an honest little shop that I am happy to support.

A friend of mine organized a party for us at U Paint I Fire, and it was so much fun! John (who runs it) is very helpful and nice. His prices are very reasonable, and there are a wide variety of items to choose from. I've been back a few times, and I'm looking forward to going again!

The owner was so friendly! We walked in to paint some ceramics and he walked us through everything. Showing us all the different options, then guiding us to where the paints were. It's a nice little place to sit, chat and have a relaxing paint session. I chose a mug, it turned out amazing!!!! I want to come back and paint a matching set!

I just love this little place. Not only can you drop in any time and the prices are exactly what you pay on face value but the owner is just so kind and enthusiastic!!! And, the firing was done SO quickly. We got our pottery in two days. Please take note the owner did say the pottery is kept for two weeks after it is fired. There is a ton of street parking and this place is an awesome location for all ages and events!!! There were children, college kids and more all having a good time. Bring your own snacks and water and enjoy a day of creating!

John was very helpful to myself and my girlfriend. It was my first time ever painting ceramics and he was friendly and always quick to help us along. The selection of un-painted ceramics were great and we chose two serving platters to paint and decorate. Space to paint and equipment were all included in the price and it was a great experience for us! Next time I am going to have to try a pottery class :)

Fun day with your friends !

The ambiance is super cute, with colorful, warm vibes. The music always soothing, and you even get hot tea and Turkish delights in bites. 1) booking has never been easier. We selected the pick you piece on site. So go earlier so you can browse and really find the piece and size you want. 2) go early, so you can start planning what kind of mosaic you plan to design in your platter. 3) be mindful of the time. You get 3 hrs, but the hours go really fast when you're having fun, and you're also new to this. Set some time aside, more than 1 hr, so do the filler beading at the end. My friends and I really pushed the boundaries of time limit and was rushing to finish our beading filler. Still super fun, but super intense thinking we wouldn't finish on time. Definitely would go back and do this again. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The establishment was clean and chic. Please note that this isn't wheel chair friendly and that you will have to go down a bunch of stairs to reach the studio. Price was right! For unlimited glass and beads. And for just the whole experience. Really recommend it! Parking was easy to find outside. Paid meter, bust its only 2 hrs max? So had to go up again to refill.. send a friend up with your receipts so one person can refill all the cars. Or carpool!

Hands down, the best art workshop around!…read more At the Mosaic Art Studio you can make your own traditional Turkish lamp using hand cut mosaic glass and beads. I've never been to a more satisfying art workshop. You start with a specific project in mind (think Candle Holders, or different shapes of lamps... Table, Aladdin, Swan, and Moon lamps). They are all the same difficulty and range in prices from $79-139. In their studio, you spend 3 hours making your lamp, and what may seem like a lot of time, those precious hours will fly by. Their studio, which is just across from Columbia station, is gorgeous! It's decorated with rugs and lamps and intricate Turkish pieces all set to get inspiration from. Each workshop table has an assortment of colorful beads and hand-cut glass pieces. You also get a handy sheet that has examples of designs that you can use for your creation. It's fun getting to design your own lamp. You have the creative freedom to choose the color, shapes and styles, or you can even wing it. Whatever you choose, it will come out perfectly following their instruction on what to do. Once you're finished making your glass bowl insert, the studio takes two weeks to seal it to preserve your design. You'll receive an email when it's ready to collect. And at home, you can marvel in awe of what you created. I've also booked the team here for an in-office team-building group workshop, and they were fantastic. They set up everything similar to their studio and even played the traditional Turkish music. The instruction was clear and they had plenty of their friends to help on a one-on-one basis if anyone needed help or advice. The team here make it a really seamless process and I couldn't recommend them enough! Come to their beautiful studio or book them for an event, either way, it's a fun time creating your own Turkish mosaic lamp!

It was just a 1hr workshop which included instructions as well. It was $35 per person which I thought was very standard considering this was not a pottery wheel class but a clay pottery class. Our instructor was super nice and took her time to go over everything. She was around in case we had any questions. The class was pretty full considering it was a Saturday afternoon so I would recommend booking them in advance. They always have fun classes depending on the months/season. This was a special one they had for valentine's day. Their space is pretty big and has two floors with multiple classes happening at the same time. They also have special classes for kids and also host kids birthday parties! I would definitely come back to try some of their other workshops.

A friend of mine tried to register her daughter for a kids painting class and was denied access due…read moreto her daughter having a disability and needing the support of an aide (who she was happy to coordinate herself); another mom of a kiddo with a disability also had her child denied for the same reason. Your rationale was that it's a "kids only" space, so the fact that they needed the support of a human aide (adult) means they aren't welcome in your kids class. There are all different kinds of aids/aides that people with varying abilities and needs use for support - some are human aides and some are physical aids (like a wheelchair or glasses). When you start to think of a human aide as no different than a physical aid (both support an individual with a specific need to navigate the world) it makes denying someone access to a space or program much harder to justify. Would you deny a kid who requires a wheelchair a spot in your class because it might mean having to move a table or two? Your decision to deny these two access to your kids classes not only violate their human rights (which are protected by BC, Canadian, and International Law) but violate their humanity. It tells them that because they move through the world differently than some of their peers that they aren't as worthy, that they don't deserve to have the same opportunities as their peers or BE with their peers. It also denies their peers (and your staff) the opportunity to share space and an activity with THEM. I only know one of these kiddos personally but when I say this is your (and your other participants) loss please know how very sincerely I mean it. This kid brings a level of joy that I haven't seen matched by anyone else. She's funny, and she's creative, and she's smart, and she's kind, and she's talented, and she's joy-full, and she deserves to spend a few hours doing the thing she loves the very most (painting) with her peers. And the other kids in your class deserve for her to be part of their peer group. Inclusion isn't a favour that "typical" people do for "atypical" people. Inclusion is a right and it benefits all of us. As those of us in Canada sit here and watch in horror as the US government degrades diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to push the narrative that white, able bodied, neurotypical, heterosexual, cisgendered men are the "norm" and the only demographic that doesn't have to prove their worth I can't tell you how unbelievably disappointed and heartsick I was to learn that an art studio in my hometown has opted not to include a nine-year-old girl because she has a disability. Do better.
