After having been to Djapa twice, I have mixed feelings…read more
Positives:
* An incredible all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of options
* Don't expect typical Japanese fare. I'd say they offer a Japanese-Brazilian fusion menu, chock full of very creative dishes. Very fruity and tropical sushi options? Check. Want some Brazilian picanha? Check. How about the typical Brazilian stuffed crab shells (casquinha de siri)? Check. Typical Brazilian pastéis, usually served by Japanese immigrants? Check. So if you go with the right mindset, you'll have an enjoyable time
* Good tempura and ceviche
* Excellent service and pleasant atmosphere
Negatives:
* In a city with an over overabundance of terrific Japanese options, Djapa offers creativity and variety, not quality
* As some Japanese food connoisseurs have told me, Djapa offers Japanese food for Brazilians. And there is nothing wrong with that. But if you want a more authentic experience, go elsewhere. My family goes to Japan very often, so for us Djapa is a quaint, decent, and heavily Brazilian inspired option
* Average sushi, unimpressive oysters, and subpar stuffed crab shells (casquinha de siri).
* Like many all-you-can-eat outlets, Djapa is more about quantity than quality. There are many good dishes, but nothing blows you away
Ultimately, Djapa is a three-star alternative located in a city with a plethora of four or five-star Japanese outlets.
