The Tucson Roller Derby league is amazing. I went to the double header on November 19th, and even though they had a last minute venue change from the Bookman's Event Center to the Pima County Fairgrounds, the bout was still well attended by the loyal TRD fans. That night featured bouts between the TRD Cooper Queens vs. Dirty Verde and TRD's Furious Truckstop Waitresses vs. The Surly Gurlies. The first bout was a blow out but the second bout was fierce and the jammer for the Surly Gurlies was ejected, which is uncommon. I will be supporting the TRD from now on. They did have beer, coffee, and cocoa for sale. But the one downside was they only served Bud or Bud Light. I hope when I see them play at Bookman's there might be more choices. read more

I'm not a big sports fan. I can't sit round watching other people play and have fun. That's why the TRD is great for me. Lots of fun people and excitement. You feel like you're right there on the oval Jammin', Blockin' & Pivotin'. That's Pivoting not Pirouetting. I just learned those terms last night when I got the rule sheet handed out at the door by one of The VICE SQUAD members. One of the cool things is you get to hang with the athletes. They're selling t-shirts and checking ID's for beer. After every session they go around the oval and spectators hold their hands out to be touched by the Olympians. There's also Mascots to get pics with too. If you're a big sports fan you'll like this because the teams are just as disciplined and dedicated as our championship softball team. There was a large crowd but since it's such a large space it wasn't crowded. I saw some people I hadn't seen in a long time. In addition, if you're new to town this is a good way to meet fun people. There's lots of light unlike at some clubs. So, just in case you meet Mr/Ms Right, you don't have to worry about the next time you see him/her thinking; "great now I have to become a vampire cuz I can't take Mr/Ms Right out in the daytime." OK, enough with the sports and social Derby. Lets get to the food! Last night there were 2 of the best food trucks of Tucson. Just so you know, Tucson has about twenty #1 food trucks. So, the name doesn't matter. Just know you'll always have good food whenever you go to the Derby. In conclusion, I may need to take another look at football, maybe I'll like it. NOT!!! Since Tucson sold the sidewinders (Triple A baseball) and pretty much closed the door on Spring Training (teams moving to PHX), there is a void of entertainment that consumed me in my college days. I was back in Tucson this past weekend for a semi-annual visit and I decided to check out the roller derby. I even dragged my friends along for the action. They too loved the action. I've been a regular at the Windy City Rollers (Chicago derby league) all year and I was excited to see a league in a smaller market operate. This event did not disappoint. The venue Bladeworld is small, but you still get a good look at the action. The first bout I watched was fantastic. In a back and forth battle, the Copper Queens took down the last year's reigning champs...the Vice Squad. Even losing a key player Pixie Axe in a nasty take down that drove her into the wall. A little shaken up and a fractured collarbone for the effort. That girl is tough. Nonetheless, the Copper Queens won my support. I mean how can you not support a team that is a throwback to Bisbee and the mining history of Southern AZ. Or it could be their fantastic nicknames like Powder Keg, Cheap Ore, and Dirty Teri. These dames can derby! This league will catch on in about 3 years. Tucson can be a bit slow to come around on the fun underlying subcultures that develope there. My daughter directed my to this roller derby because she knows I like not the run of the mill sporting events. The Dust Devil Flat Track Roller Derby was a great event. First of all, it is nothing like you may have seen on TV. These women give it their all with no theatrics and it is amazing to see their energy as they skate two 30 minute bouts. It doesn't take long to learn the rules and follow the action which makes the derby nice for all ages. (Note - Not like TV and no theatrical violence) I also like the playing rink is approachable. The athletes are close to the fans and during half time come visit with fans and supporters. This is important because today too many things are not approachable by the fans. Not many sporting activities can get you a seat ringside for a reasonable cost. The two day event cost $20 for both days if bought in advance and a single day was $15. I am looking forward to seeing this derby next year and will definitely look up the local team for other derby action. read more

The only TRD event I've been to was this special double header at the Bookman's Event Center (http://www.yelp.com/events/tucson-tucson-roller-derby-3). I know this wasn't the typical TRD event but I had a blast. I think the Tucson Roller Derby is a really cool thing to have in Tucson. It's a non profit and offers a lot of awesome opportunities to the participants that can't be found anywhere else AND offers great funky entertainment to Tucson. I have only been to a few roller derby bouts in my day - but this place is just fun. I enjoy sitting right next to the rink to get a good view of the action. Be warned - you have to be 18+ to sit right next to the rink (due to insurance?). If you have kids and want a seat, I definitely recommend getting there early. I usually come right as the games are about to start, and have never gotten a seat that wasn't on the floor. I do love the food trucks that are always outside. This allows for some quick grub and the TRD sells cheap beer inside. Be warned, don't drink too much - as they only have porta-johns outside. The bathrooms are currently in construction - TBD when they will be complete. Come for a great time and some creative roller derby names!
