I was there recently there for an endoscopy and colonoscopy. Dr. McCallum and all the nursing staff were five stars fine, and I received the compassionate care that I needed. The office staff communicated well. The person at the front desk, Megan (?) probably should be in another position. She sounds and acts like a robot. However, in short, it's exceedingly clear that the joint practices of Drs. McCallum, McNerney and Hanna have LONG ago outgrown the facility. The parking lot is too tight and stretched to the limit. On the day of a procedure, whether the patient or driver, this adds up to additional stress. The larger waiting room needs better lighting and some freshening up in the area of esthetics. The smaller surgery waiting room, to the east, is an abomination! The day that I was there, it was pretty chilly outside. The patient exit door opens frequently, and it got cold and drafty. So, there we are, faithful spouses, drivers and patients--people who may not have eaten in more than 24 hours and slept little--sitting in this ugly, cold an cramped waiting area. There aren't enough seats and there isn't enough room for comfort. The patient exit door should be in the back of the building with a dedicated door for such and a safe place where their drivers can park. As the throughput of the facility is high, I have to say that I felt rushed as I was coming out of anesthesia. Rushed, in that beds are in very short supply. "Wake up and get out of here!" So, to the owners of the business, I say, take some of your retained earnings, and invest in a better property and plant whereby your patients can receive the first class treatment that they deserve and that you want them to have. read more

This place runs like a well oiled machine. As you walk into the front door, a receptionist helps with check in. A few minutes later, an assistant takes you back, a quick change of clothes and it was it's time to lie down. The staff are very friendly and polite. They place you at ease through conversation and they appear to enjoy working together. The excellent communication helps relieve stress and anxiety. A short nap and it's recovery time. Easy, fast and efficient. Dr Hanna is knowledgeable, experienced and trustworthy. read more

Ive been receiving phone calls for an appointment i never scheduled. And the woman on the other end heavy european accent tells me she doesnt need to take my shit she just collects the money. Let me tell you i will never go back to this practice ever! Apparently they booked some other persons appointments using my personal information, as well the way they spoke to me like they are to bothered to help find out what happened, im sorry you work for a medical practice your there and my money or ins helps to pay your salary so in essence you do work for me. Dr Anis Hanna works at Tucson Gastroenterology. Dr Hanna is one of the most irresponsible doctors I have ever been to. I have had colon issues for years. Once my colonoscopy was completed. He was done with me, although I continue to have serious colon issues. His nurse practitioner is completely overwhelmed, and unable to return any of the calls, I would not recommend this practice. read more

Dr. McCallum conducted a lower G.I. test. I was unable to complete the test due to a "problem" that truly turned out to be something that required surgery; therefore, the problem was a finding and no fault to Dr. McCallum. He assisted in finding me one of the top-notch surgeons, Dr. Cybil Corning here in Tucson. After just a few weeks and a few more tests, surgery was complete and after recovery life much improved. I was rather upset the day of the testing with Dr. McCallum and inappropriately so he was quite diplomatic and consistent in his findings....thank God! I would absolutely recommend this practice to anyone and it is also highly recommended by the surgeon. I am baffled by the negative reviews and the overall rating for Tucson Gastroenterology (3040 N Swan to be precise). My wife has had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy there, and today she had another upper endoscopy. Every single aspect of the experience from start to finish was outstanding. I made the phone call to schedule the appointment, and the woman who handled my phone call was great. Got my wife scheduled in less than 2 months, AND, it turned out they got a cancellation for an even earlier (consultation) appointment. It was easy to get it scheduled in the first place but a huge plus to get in on an earlier cancellation. Dr. McNerney is the specialist handling my wife's procedure. I went with her to the consultation. He is an excellent listener, explains things very clearly, and is caring and compassionate. I highly recommend Dr. McNerney for any gastrointestinal needs. The staff - all of them - are great, too. Excellent customer service skills. Today I went with her to the procedure itself, another outstanding experience. Front desk woman was very friendly and helpful. Facility opened on time. Free and fast WiFi. Enough restrooms for staff and visitors. Easy signage and easy parking. Comfortable facility. My wife's technician/nurse, Myrna, must have been great. My wife couldn't stop talking about how well things went with Myrna and how caring and helpful she was. You don't often hear a lot of people get psyched about their endocsopy. But every single staff member we interacted with was friendly and helpful. I'm coming back here next year when it's time for my own colonscopy! read more

Colonoscopy is fun. Said no one, but Tucson Gastroenterology made it more tolerable. They got the system right, with good communication prior to the procedure. An email came with detailed instructions and paperwork soon after setting up the appointment. A nurse called about 2 weeks before to get my health history. She asked what medications and supplements I was on, and when I needed to stop taking them. The prep kit prescription was sent to my pharmacy right away. I was pretty impressed. Most doctors offices suck im following up but this place has its stuff together! I was pretty nervous on the day of the procedure (first timer) but all the nurses/techs put me at ease. They were all friendly and said hi to me before. Lots of butt/fart jokes going on. Dr. McCallum was calm and had great bedsid manners. I was in and out in less than 2 hours. I highly recommend this place when you're ready for this rite of passage. read more

DO NOT ever send your elderly parents here for a follow-up on anything. They clearly practice AGEISM! The office staff was unwilling to take make an appointment for a follow-up from an ER visit for an UPPER GI BLEED without my mother's CT scan records. Keep in mind she was an ESTABLISHED PATIENT who had a colonoscopy 8 weeks earlier and already had a referral on file! We had access to whole of my mother's ER records from St. Joseph's ER portal which could easily be shared via email. They refused to accept them. Rather than explaining why, they just dismissed her. They LITERALLY wanted her to go back home and print them herself. No one ever gave her a ROI to sign. Their excuse was that if they sent the request, it could take weeks to get the records. I went into the office understandably upset to try to help my mom and was just met with attitude. I asked why they couldn't take it via email and was told that "They don't do email." I asked if the doctor has privileges at St. Joseph's so he could get it themselves. They said they didn't. My response was that was understandable. I finally had to demand an ROI for my mom to sign so they would request the records from St. Joseph's ER who was expecting the request. Once that was signed, we left. Now I was curt because there is no reason it should be this complicated this day an age email is READILY available to any medical facility. What kind of antiquated place are they running? When we got home the scheduler Tessa who refused to make my mom's appointment had the nerve to call. She first started barking at my mom and then I took over the call. This woman had the audacity to admonish me for causing a "scene". I didn't cause a scene by any means, my mother and son were with me. My frustration was that no one would explain why the couldn't do email. She said it wasn't encrypted. That's understandable. But her delivery was unprofessional, snappy, rude, and she wouldn't let me get a word in edgewise. I finally lost my *ish and said idgaf what she had to say you dismissed my mom who has a serious issue. I shouldn't have had to ask for a ROI. She kept on and finally she made mad enough to say I wouldn't be taking my mom back there and I told her to have a nice day ( yes it was curt)....her response " You have a nice f*cking day!" Just WOW! Don't trust this office with your elderly parents....they obviously DON'T CARE about their well-being and have no intention of being helpful!!!! Funny part is the girl that I asked for the ROI called about 30 minutes later and said she got the medical records already. No kidding...St. Joseph's knew the problem was serious! I told her what Tessa did. The girl said she never felt attacked or that I caused a scene. She understood why I was upset. She apologized for Tessa's behavior. Unfortunately, the damage is done. I will be filing a formal complaint with the insurance company and leaving this review everywhere I can. Tessa needs to be fired!!! And this establishment needs to be investigated for AGEISM! Dr. McNerney is a very skilled technician... did my endoscopy, no issues. I'd trust him if I ever have a colonoscopy (very doubtful, I prefer do-at-home FIT tests)... he doesn't have the best personality, unwilling to discuss general stomach problems like bloating, distension, indigestion... he just wants to to the big bucks procedures, most especially colonoscopies... His NP, Helen Fishbait, is similar, but far worse... outright unfriendly, even sarcastic and pompous... zero sense of humor... and also really pushes the colonoscopy... rushed me out in minutes, totally unhelpful. I have a gym pal, a retired Mayo Clinic Gastro MD... told me the at home tests were just fine... IF negative... and since 2017, all mine were. My husband saw one of the doctors for a routine colonoscopy and had no complaints. I took our autistic son to this same doctor and was disappointed. Some specialists are just not good with children or individuals with special needs. I then asked to have Dr. Hanna see our son. He was patient and gentle with our son, explaining to him why he was having GI problems and how to resolve the problems naturally. I was so impressed with his demeanor that I scheduled my routine colonoscopy with Dr. Hanna. The only reason why I am giving them four stars instead of five is I am hoping they read this and realize that matching a doctor with a particular patient's needs is something they should consider important. read more

Our medical appointment was cancelled the day prior due to supposed insurance conflict. We have Arizona Complete as our secondary insurance and they refused to see us despite their being contracted with United Healthcare. The office billing manager, Arlene claimed that they would be fined or lose their license if they were to bill the patient the difference that United doesn't cover. Since we have a "need" to be covered by a government insurance, Arlene claimed that they would be in trouble for billing us. We called both Arizona Complete and United and neither insurance ever heard of this problem. I couldn't get to the bottom of this and cannot find any other justification. Perhaps they just discriminate against people who receive government assistance, I don't know. That said, their front desk people were reasonable and nice. read more

I have talked to their billing department over the phone, provided payment information and that has never been applied to my bill. It is almost impossible to get through to their billing. I have a bill that I marked as being paid over the phone in March. Here late in July they are sending me a letter saying it is being sent to collections! WTF read more

reading other reviews on here, I had the same phone issues but eventually got thru and they were super nice and understanding when having to tell them about embarassing GI symptoms..I'm a travel RN and not from here so I asked the docs and nurses on floor I was working on and they recommended this place. I saw Helen, she was great, no complaints about her, and I knew ahead of time I would be seeing an NP and not the doc. I'm self pay, no insurance yet, but working on it...So my complaint is re: the charges they got me for...In many of these reviews, people were able to have an exam or a procedure the same day of their first visit, and some unhappy about that, whereas, I wish they had done Something! even if that meant not charging me and telling me to come back for testing etc. Instead, I paid nearly $200 for someone to tell me I needed a colonoscopy, fiber pills and probiotics!! That was a big disappointment especially when prior to the visit they had quoted it to be from $120-$180, depending on what was done. So when she was done telling me what I should do next I asssumed I would be paying the lower end..$120, but to my surprise it was $170...Ugg, not cool at all. then they quoted me on the colonoscopy and I will def have to wait for insurance because I'm in no position to pay upwards of $1200 for that! read more

I had a colonoscopy yesterday. On checking in for my appointment, the front office staff member was helpful and efficient. Dr McNerney did the procedure. I was sedated very lightly and I had no discomfort. Dr McNerney explained the procedure clearly and answered my questions. The nurse and techs were professional and friendly. Due to the light sedation I was awake and not groggy at all. I spent a short period of time in the recovery area and was able to dress myself with no problems. The nurse walked me out to my husband and accompanied us out to our car. We left and went out to breakfast! Today I received a phone call from the office checking to see how I was feeling! I reported "A OKAY"! The only negative I had was trying to make my appointment on the phone. I finally went to the office in person to make the appointment. The clerk was helpful and I left with my appointment scheduled and my prescription for the dreaded prep drink in hand! It appeared to me that the front office was very short staffed. Barely discussed my symptoms or reasons for referral during my short meeting with the Dr. and didn't explain answers to my questions. Went right to scheduling a diagnostic procedure. The Dr. missed diagnosing several what seemed to be obvious conditions my current doctor diagnosed after he performed the same procedure. The follow up call to discuss the results of tests done during the procedure here was with an unknowable medical assistant who couldn't explain anything and gave me incorrect information and advice. I feel I was totally ripped off. Wasted alot of time and money without any progress to treating symptoms that drained on me daily. Go somewhere else that's more professional. read more

Fortunately I was diagnosed with microscopic colitis at Tucson gastroenterologist specialist with Dr. Mcnerney. That's where the fortune lucks out. I had to wait an unreasonable amount of time for an appointment and more un reasonable time for a colonoscopy. Afterwards I was told I'd receive a call with results. I didn't. I called and was told after 2 weeks they knew nothing. I said that was unreasonable. I was put on hold for 5 minutes and told I had microscopic colitis. I asked what that meant and his nurse said inflammation after she put me on hold again. I was put on steroids with no follow up and no information on what my condition was or any options. I've found most of my relief from google. Aside from the lack of communication my IV was put in wrong. I had immense pain in my arm along with swelling and all the fluid built up. They gave me no explanation, relief or even a sorry. It's scary to be put under and have it not work only to have your entire arm full of fluid for 2 days. read more

So we have been seeing Dr Hanna for a few years. My husband has a feeding tube. We go there to get it changed out. However when ever there is an issue it is hard to get through to the doctor. I had left a voice mail 3 weeks ago. Been playing phone tag. I don't know why they just don't order another tube and make an appointment. Last message I got from them was "what size is it? You don't have a record? So I left a voice mail a week ago and now still no response from them. WTH? read more

I am not sure why the bad reviews. I am a medical professional (MSN, RN) with over a decade of experience and I felt that the office was wonderful. The front line staff was accommodating and informative. The nurses were amazing, especially Myrna who has been with the practice for 18 years!!! I can tell you for sure that this longevity with a practice is rare. Dr. Hanna was caring and professional. We received ample information prior to the procedure and after. The nurses were so caring and kind! Recovery nurse walked Mom to the car and gave her a hug. It was Friday and she was the last patient. Dr. McNerney is heartless human being. I am a quadriplegic and came in with a complex issue. The doctor complete dismiss my pain and any attempt at furthering exploring what was wrong with me as I am barely able to eat one meal a day for a long time. He literally just walked out of the room mid conversation like I was a complaining child that he didn't have time for. I recently had a procedure at Tucson Gastroenterology and I found the staff to be very professional except for one critical area. When attempting to make an appointment, return a call to someone on their staff asking for more info or attempting to ask a question I could not get anyone to answer the phone. I do mean anyone, even the receptionist. Every member of the staff has long voicemail messages which are very confusing, not to mention unnecessary. If you're away from your desk just say so and ask the caller to leave their name, birthdate and whatever other information you need and offer to call back ASAP. This seems to a simple issue to address with some training on VM and reinforcing the importance of patient accessibility. read more

BAD FOR YOUR WALLET - This was not a good experience for me because all they care about is getting your money. Service and procedure were average but when it came to billing they are completely inflexible. So what should have and COULD have been coded as a routine, preventative procedure that would be fully covered by insurance they refused to code that way. I wish I could give a no star review for this doctors office. A little while ago I went to speak to Dr. McCallum about stomach pain and extreme bloating I've experienced for most of my life. I was not taken seriously and even felt I was being laughed at at points. As a younger, small woman who appears very fit I'm used to people laughing when I say I get extremely bloated but didn't expect this reaction from a doctor. We talked about the possibility of a gluten intolerance or other food intolerances and he said other than doing elimination diets on my own there was nothing he could do except doing a whole procedure where they take a tissue sample from my stomach and that that was my only option. Since this appointment I've done more research and found that you can do a simple blood test to test for gluten intolerances and celiac. This should've been the first step before some whole procedure where I am sedated with a tube down my throat. As a young woman I'm very used to men not taking me seriously, especially older men in a position of authority but thought that a doctor could be held to a higher standard. I left feeling like the appointment was a complete waste of time and completely uninformative. I felt that not only was I not taken seriously but the pain I've lived with most of my life was laughed off by a doctor who just wanted to rush through the appointment. I was hoping this wouldn't be the case but after this experience I only want to see female doctors from now on. I hope others have had a better experience here but if you are considering your options I would highly suggest looking elsewhere. read more
