Gracious hosts, Lovely Place to Stay…read more Our room was The Rebecca Moseley Room. Even though our arrival was late, we were greeted by our host. He showed us to our room. Our bed was a queen-size sleigh bed. The design fit perfectly with the antique furniture that decorated the room. There is an en suite powder room with toilet and sink, down the hall a few steps is your own bathroom with modern tub and shower, toilet and sink. Our bed was amazingly comfortable and made with exquisite linens and a light weight comforter. There was also an extra quilt for our use, but we did not need it. Although the fireplace cannot be used as it is original to the historic building, our room was warm and comfortable, We were asked what time we wanted breakfast, which is very nice indeed. The breakfast, was bountiful and delicious. We were offered baked apple, accompanied by gluten free granola, and yogurt, farm fresh eggs, bacon and our choice of coffee or tea. I was pleasantly surprised to find a tea chest on the breakfast table with a very large selection of teas. If you are looking for the epitome of an early nineteenth century house-turned B&B, this is the place for you. The charm of the house is only superseded by the warmth graciousness of the hosts.

I stumbled along this place online and we were so happy I did! The innkeeper was very gracious and gave great recommendations on local restaurants and activities. It was September/October so we decided we wanted to take a "leaf peeping" drive and so we followed a map and some road signs for magnificent views of the New England fall foliage. We even went over a few covered bridges, that was a first for us! We did wine tastings at local nearby wineries, including Hopkins, which was our favorite. We bought some souvenir wine glasses and a bottle (or three) of wine and enjoyed it at Lake Waramaug -- the most beautiful autumn setting -- not far from home base at Constitution Oak. Bunnell Farm was nearby and they have a great corn maze. You can also stop for fresh produce, pickles and preserves at Freund Farm along the Leaf Peeping route. This B&B is in a great area with lots of local attractions nearby, including historic Litchfield. We stayed in a room upstairs and it was huge! There were 3 beds so we both had our own bed and then some. The bathroom was in the hallway but we were the only guests so it didn't matter. There was a nice dining room with pastries and coffee waiting for us in the morning and a cozy sitting room to unwind.

But it was Maggie, the owner and the amazing farm that provided the most special elements of our visit. There are horses and chickens to watch and feed and friendly dogs to play with. While we were there we had the unique experience of watching a horse get his nails trimmed by a farrier. Maggie was a fantastic host, giving us great ideas for places to go and the best restaurants. She cooked breakfasts with eggs just gathered from the chickens that day, homemade muffins and pancakes. There are home made pies and snacks 24 hours a day. At night the stars were the clearest we have ever seen and sleeping was very peaceful.

We enjoyed the rehearsal dinner on the porch of the building next to the large silo. It was right before sunset, so we got to enjoy the gorgeous view of the land, trees, and lake while the August sun went down. There was a lovely breeze and we enjoyed our meal under twinkling string lights. There were tons of beautiful flowers blooming around the grounds, and we enjoyed lawn games on the rolling green grass. The next day, for the ceremony, we were located down by the lake. The ceremony took place on a lawn in front of a beautiful old tree, facing the water. Afterwards, we made our way into the old barn and enjoyed cocktail hour and the reception. The space was well designed and the whole experience was magical; candles and simple draperies. A beautiful breeze flowed through the venue as the rumble of thunder echoed in the distance. Despite the thunderstorm that passed through, we were safe and dry inside the barn. All in all, one of the most beautiful and magical wedding venues I've seen.

The simplest way to describe our experience is this: we enjoyed it so much that we canceled our hotel reservation for the following weekend and came right back to the Plume House! There is incredible historic charm and character throughout the house--it's warm and inviting everywhere. The rooms are incredibly comfortable, and while the bathrooms have been restored with modern fixtures, they've done an amazing job finding pieces that maintain the historic character of the home, along with making such creative use of the limited spaces. Of course, the cherry on top was spending time with Kay and enjoying her wonderful homemade breakfast specials. It's no wonder the Plume House was named "Best of CT" in both 2025 and 2026.
