Thomas Jefferson lived here during his boyhood and went to school at the one-room schoolhouse that still exists. I wondered if he doodled designs for Monticello and the State Capitol when he was bored... You can do a self-guided walking tour of the grounds for $5, but if you want to see the house, you have to make an appointment and it's cheaper if you have a group of people. There is a Christmas tour that includes the house and it's well worth the $12...kind of like Williamsburg with the fresh wreaths, fruit, and natural decorations. But, what's really cool is that this is a working farm and you can buy organic eggs, chickens, and even a whole cow if you need one. You can also rent the grounds for a special event or wedding...how cool would that be to get married at TJ's boyhood home? Recently, they also started boarding horses at the stables

The plantation is beautiful along with the drive out River Road. Thoroughly enjoyed the Saturday drive with lite traffic. The smell of Marigolds filling my nostrils while dodging larger than life bumble bees around the old estate. We came here for the Easter Egg Hunt. The 10th car in the parking lot so we obviously arrived early. Walking up the hill was picturesque and that was about it. The staff was minimal for the amount of those in attendance along with the amount of Easter Eggs. More than disappointing considering that it was $5 for each child and more than one child walked away with only "goose eggs"... Glad it was pretty though...

It's really beautiful at the Tuckahoe Plantation, where my friend and I went today. We had a great time on the grounds; peaceful and calm.

If you live in Richmond, Gather is a real hike. This combination art gallery, boutique and…read moreboxed-lunch spot is waaaay out in Midlothian. It's housed in an old general store that the owners fixed up for business. The atmosphere here is elegant meets shabby chic. It's one of the stores where the inventory is so cool and well displayed, it makes me want to buy something and take a little piece of the store's feeling home with me. You'll find cool plates and glasses, antiques, designer purses and other fun stuff. The owner also sells her landscape paintings here. It's worth planning the drive for some cool shopping. On one occasion I got my mom some really beautiful hand-blown juice glasses. Each one was different, but they made a lovely set. And I got about 6 glasses for something like $35. Not bad. Along with the store, there's a pretty patio and the owner sells boxed lunches. The menu is online. There's usually some sandwiches for sale, but you can also call and place a specific order by 4 p.m. the day before you want to go for lunch. I've never eaten here, I've only shopped, so I can't comment on the food either way. I can say I do love shopping in the store and will go back for gifts...be they for others or me!

When I try this at home, it looks like I'm having a yard sale in my living room. It's not really that far if you hop on the Powhite...I don't know why Richmonders think going to Midlothian is like traveling to another country. Of course, I spend a lot of time in that part of the city since I have family there. It's a great place for gifts, especially for somebody who already has everthing, because there are a lot of one-of-a-kind things to wear or home accessories. I love the colorful cowboy hats and always see dishes or glasses I would like to have, but I've put a moratorium on buying stuff like that until I can afford a big hutch or china cabinet. I haven't ever had lunch there, but there's a really cute patio area so it looks like it would be a fun place to take a break from a hard day of shopping (or hunter-gathering as I like to think of it). I wouldn't call this an inexpensive place...more mid-range or pricing like you would expect in a Carytown boutique.

Celebrations At the Reservoir - The reception tent

Beautiful waterfront location but there is work needed here…read more.. Signage is super confusing when you first pull in - it's really narrow one-lane roads/paths throughout and it's like a maze, one where you can't turn around you just have to loop through... So the signs need to be more clear and much larger and say it's one-way or "do not go this way" because if someone messes up and goes the wrong way - you'd have to back up or drive off the asphalt and into grass and tree roots on steep declines, um no. One of my best friends got married last weekend at the Heron's View waterfront gazebo with her reception at the outdoor Garden site which has a beautiful gazebo and a wooded water path walk over the water which is very picturesque but when you park in the gravel lot you have to walk a loooong way and once you get to the "celebration" tented area it's all pine needles and roots with no specific path from the gravel lot to the tables, chairs, dance floor, or wooden bridge. With guests in heels and long dresses, they should have a clear path for people to walk easily on to get down to the water and wooden bridge. The "bridal suite" and bathroom area in this location is very rudimentary, small, and rustic shed. It's much nicer inside than expected once we got inside - but it's super small. Our party was 3 bridesmaids and 1 bride and with the four of us and our things, it was a tight fit. For people who have 10+ bridesmaids, you couldn't possibly fit the people in there at all. But it does have a nice one-person bathroom area, AC, and new finished inside so I was pleasantly surprised once we got into it day of. I was one of the three bridesmaids and we had an hour-long rehearsal the night before on site with their on-site coordinator who was very kind and organized. She was easy to work with and kept things running smoothly. The event started promptly at 6pm the following day and was scheduled to go until 11pm for a water/boat send off. The coordinator kept everything on track and we started right on time and stayed on track most of the night. She also easily made adjustments to the schedule as she saw a lot of guests leaving early so the bouquet toss, cake cutting and boat sendoff were all moved to about an hour earlier than planned but went very smoothly and allowed for my friend's photos of those events to still have people in them before everyone left but the bridesmaids... haha. The food provided for the event was basic but very good. We had warm rolls, grilled chicken, green beans, ceasar salad, mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese with tea, water, soda and lemonade. The guests were served buffet-style by the staff and the head of food service was friendly and engaging, after we all ate she walked around and offered to clear plates, made small-talk, and brought drink refills to the wedding party. She was awesome. The wooded and lakefront location in Midlothian, VA is beautiful. As another reviewer noted - it feels like it's secluded and private but it's in the middle of a largely populated area with major neighborhoods nearby with hundreds of homes. It's on a large lake in the Brandermill/Woodlake neighborhoods which means it's close to Richmond and there is plenty in the way of food, hotels, fun, and shopping nearby for guests and attendees who might be coming from far away to attend or bridal party last-minute needed emergency items. I've always loved this area and my cousins grew up here so it was a pleasure to come back and see the lake area again after 20+ years. Overall, my friend's event was beautiful and this is a gorgeous event space. A few things can be done for improvement but I imagine they would be very costly so, for what it is, they're doing a great job and producing beautiful weddings for people with friendly staff members. My friend is very happy with how her wedding turned out and, in the end, that is all that matters.

What a lovely place to have a wedding; a hidden gem! The water, "Swift Creek Reservoir", was a…read morebeautiful backdrop for the ceremony. We went on July 3rd, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous, which came to my surprise with it being mid-summer in Virginia. The bar was in a great spot of the venue which made it easy and quick, plus the bartenders were very friendly. The outdoor area was a nice place for people to get fresh air and socialize as well. I will say, that the dance floor felt a little small, but then again it was suitable for the capacity that this venue is able to hold. There are two floors for tables to be set up. My husband and I were seated upstairs, which made it a bit difficult to see the bride and groom, especially when the toasts were being made. But none-the-less, the wedding was beautiful!

The venue itself is absolutely gorgeous and created the perfect backdrop for our wedding day. That said, there are some areas where we think the experience could be even better. Communication throughout the planning process was sometimes challenging, even when we reached out with questions. On the day of our wedding, our hope was to follow the timeline we had carefully planned so that we could maximize time with our guests. Although our coordinator reassured us things were on track, the buffet ended up starting later than expected. Because of that delay, our reception ended with much less dancing time than we had envisioned. We had chosen a buffet in part because we were told it would be quicker than a plated dinner, but that unfortunately wasn't the case. We share this not to take away from how beautiful and memorable our day was, but because we believe The Mill has all the ingredients to deliver a truly seamless experience. With improved communication and a little more focus on time management, future couples will be able to enjoy every aspect of what makes this venue so special--the incredible food, stunning setting, and joyful atmosphere.

We looked at a number of places in and around Richmond but nothing matched The Mill's beauty nor the warmth and hospitality of Lisa (owner and proprietor) and Kim (day-of coordinator). Throughout the entire process, they were genuinely thrilled and excited to make sure our big day was spectacular. The venue itself may be beautiful, but they truly make it special. They communicated with us every step of the way, fielded our never ending questions, and made every change or update that we needed. During the ceremony itself, Kim was seemingly everywhere, handling everything. She directed us through the whole day and we both felt that she is as necessary as an appendage. If Olivia Pope was a wedding coordinator, she would have learned her job from Kim! A huge kudos to the food and beverage team. Our dinner was over-the-top good. We went with an upscale southern theme - think fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, brisket with a blackberry bourbon sauce (the star of the show!), and chicken and waffles. We received nothing but praise from our guests about the food. They were all delighted! On top of that, the cake was outstanding! We went with their almond cake with whipped almond custard and raspberry preserves. It was so good our guests took most of their second servings with them back to the hotel. Pierre the pastry chef did a phenomenal job! Overall, we could not have been more pleased with The Mill at Fine Creek. I urge anyone considering them to go for the Day of Wedding Coordinator. If you're needing help deciding if The Mill is the right choice, here are some some things that helped us pick them: - Most outdoor venues don't have a plan b for rain (they will make you buy tents just-in-case), but The Mill does. We really appreciated that a lot and it made us feel more secure choosing an outdoor venue. - The Mill has 3 outdoor spots where you can get married: the creek, the pergola (where we got married) and in the mill ruins. No matter where you choose, the entire venue and all of the grounds are yours that day. - You have full use of the Miller's Cottage which is attached to the main house. This was super convenient for us and our party. There was so much space to get ready, take pictures, relax, eat and drink.
