From the moment we boarded the boat, everything was organized & punctual. The journey out to Bull Island is a treat -- a scenic, peaceful ride through pristine Lowcountry waterways, filled with wildlife sightings from sea birds to feeding dolphins. The beach drop itself is a joyful way to raise awareness and funds for sea turtle conservation. The team does an incredible job explaining the significance of the event, the impact of donations, and the vital work being done to protect these gentle creatures. Walking the beach on Bull Island with the guides who are knowledgeable & passionate about the area & conservation is a real treat. They make the entire event feel intimate and authentic. Plus, knowing that every dollar raised goes toward conservation efforts just adds to the overall sense of purpose. Bring beach/water shoes, lots of water, it gets very hot with little shade, lots of snacks, sunscreen & a hat. There is very little shade. I highly recommend this educational boat trip for all ages. Despite not living in South Carolina, I have now been on the Bull Island Ferry three times. I'm not…read morethe only one; whenever they ask the crowd if there are repeat visitors, usually around a third or so of people's hands go up. Which is to say, if you're wondering why someone would pay forty bucks a head to take a boat to an undeveloped island when there are other boneyard beaches and fields of spartina grass all around, there are plenty of right answers. The land here is beautiful and undeveloped, and while there is a small public dock where anyone can land, there are not going to be a ton of people on this island. It's large enough to be quite dynamic, with thick forests giving away to wetlands reclaiming the ditches dug by the island's previous owner; the beaches are only part of the attraction. The heat, humidity, and bugs can be bad in summer, so going during the cooler months is actually better in my experience. There are tons of alligators, which are quite large but unlike Australian crocodiles, are relatively safe to be around if you don't do anything dumb. Other wildlife and plants will vary, but will certainly be interesting. By and large, the trails are wide and well-kept, and if you take the early boat in, you can get a good run of half the island or so if you stay on your feet. Conversely, you can also relax on an isolated yet spectacular beach. If you're lucky you can find a sand dollar, and plenty of other shells and artifacts can be collected (though the wildlife refuge imposes some limits). Bringing your own food/water/sunscreen/insect repellent is a must. Regarding weather, they take a credit card number to hold your reservation but won't actually charge you until the tour is done. It would be hard to be in the continental U.S. and find a spot that is cleaner, more beautiful, and more interesting than this one.

DASH is a free public bus service operated by CARTA to many of Charleston's attractions. There are…read morethree different DASH bus routes that operate daily with frequent service on the 210 and 211, with buses running every 15 minutes for most of the day. The 213 is less frequent, running about every 45 minutes. While I stayed in the heart of Charleston, I was only able to use it once on my trip as I preferred to walk around most of the time since the city is very walkable. Also, DASH does not operate south of Broad Street, so it is not that convenient if you are trying to visit The Battery. I will say the buses are too big to operate on those narrow streets, anyway. Still, it is nice to know that this bus service is available, particularly on hot sunny days or when you do not feel like walking too far.

On our leading full day in Charleston, we partook in the Gray Line City Tour. From the Transit Shed behind the Charleston Visitor Center we boarded the vehicle for the approximately 90 minute ride. It was a 25-passenger air conditioned shuttle bus. It was a contrast from the double-decker Gray Line bus on the Nashville City tour. The adult ticket price was $33. Alan was our Tour Guide. With the credentials of a City of Charleston certified Tour Guide he was very resourceful and enthusiastic about the City's history. Within the 90-minute tour, I came out learning a lot about the City of Charleston while taking in the sights. The tour covered several points of interest from the Charleston Visitor Center at the north to the Battery at the tip of the peninsula. The points of interest included narration and views of: The Nathaniel Russel House Colonial Lake Rainbow Row Four Corners of Law The former Arsenal The Battery Water vista toward Fort Sumter Market Street and City Market The French Quarter Charleston Museum Antebellum houses Marion Square On account of the fact that the tour was not full, Alan directed us to sit in the middle seats to get the best view. From my experience sitting near the right side window; I would like to share that this is the side of the minibus where you will see the view of Charleston Harbor spread towards Fort Sumter and the Atlantic Ocean, the Nathaniel Russell House, Charleston Museum, Marion Square, and numerous points of interest.* One thing I would like to add is that we saw very little of King Street and none of the Ashley River. There was only one stop. At the Battery, Alan asked if anyone wanted to step outside to take pictures. I was the only one that left the vehicle to take in the glorious waterscape stretched to Fort Sumter and the Atlantic Ocean. I am glad that I did because I never got the chance to return to the scenic southernmost tip of Charleston. When we returned to the Charleston Visitor Center, I had a newfound knowledge and familiarity about Charleston. The ferry ride was fun. The tour guides who were 3 Rangers were very knowledgeable. We observed several dolphins frolicking in the water. Once we arrived at Fort Sumter, it was amazing. The Fort is in great shape and so much to see. They give you one hour before you will need to get back to the ferry. There is a souvenir shop for you to visit. Oh yes, there are accommodations for people with disabilities at the Fort. There is limited seating available at the Fort. Our ferry ride was just as fun heading back. Once off the ferry, there was the shuttle to take is to our vehicle. While in the area. Fort Sumter Ferry is a must visit! You definitely earned your 5-star review!
