So this time, it was a perfect solution. And I'm very glad i did visit! The food was delicious, fresh, health and vibrant. I had a butternut squash, feta cheese and pine nut salad - a very simple plate, but something I would never have done on my own, and which was delicious. My mum had an equally tasty tortilla, and we shared some bread. Not a hefty meal for either of us, by any means, but as I'm not fond of heavy lunches, this was perfect. The prices were pretty decent too - and would be even more so with a taste london card! The only thing preventing me from giving it a full five stars was one slightly un-smiling waitress. Mostly, the service was fantastic, but the waitress who served us our food and was at the till when we paid didn't really make eye contact and barely cracked a smile the whole time we were there. Which was a shame really. But I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she was just having a bad day - I'm definitely still going to go back sometime anyway!

The ladies working the night shift are very knowledgeable of the drinks and provided us with great service. While they don't serve food, we enjoyed this place because I tried the varieties of wine (even bought a bottle to take for a dinner party), old fashioned drinks, margaritas and beer. The pretzels were soft and chewy and surprisingly enough, reasonably priced! Bäkehaus also offers loaves of rye bread and a plethora of sandwiches with a German twist (I spotted a pork schnitzel sandwich with cranberry sauce on ciabatta for £3.99!), so why not grab something here for lunch instead of opting for a pricey sandwich from Pret or a sad sandwich from Tesco? It's located on the high street just minutes away from the Tube station, so you really don't have an excuse.

They've got huge windows looking out on the local traffic and commuters rushing to nearby Stamford Brook station. It's a great place to watch the world go by. Inside could be described as industrial-classroom chic, with wooden surfaces, metal stools and a selection of interesting lightbulbs dangling from the ceiling. Only a few days after opening it was already packed at lunchtime with people "working" on the wifi with their obligatory silver MacBooks. Is this what unemployed people do these days? The day I visited they asked me if I would like an extra slice of toast and, of course, I said 'yes' and even gave me Jam (apricot I believe) to go with it. Bacon especially tasty. Highly recommended by this dual UK/US Citizen whose favorite/favourite meal is Breakfast and who believes American diner breakfasts are one of the glories of Western Civilization (if we're allowed to say that anymore!).
