I visited the Guide Dogs for the Blind facility in Boring, OR, with a group of people from the…read moreMolalla Adult Center. We took a tour (along with others who joined us) that was as informative as it was interesting. We saw some of the kennel areas, the outside runs, and a trainer or two who were working with recently returned dogs now learning to be guides for blind people. The staff and volunteers were knowledgeable and friendly, encouraging all of us to ask questions. It is a beautiful campus - clean, well-appointed, beautiful landscaping, and easily navigated by people with walkers and wheelchairs. Although we weren't there on graduation day, if you've never been to a Guide Dog graduation where the blind people "graduate" and get ready to go home with their new guide dogs, I encourage you to go. Graduations are held every few weeks on Saturdays and are free to attend. (I can't believe I didn't take more photos! I guess I was so enchanted with this facility that it completely skipped my mind.)

Sadly, not many others know what good work this little hideaway in Oregon does on a regular basis. This campus trains dogs from about 15 months old for the use and gaining of independence of visually impaired individuals FREE OF CHARGE. How cool is that? Just another reason why a donation to this organization would be welcomed and would go a long way. This is my second graduation ceremony at the Boring campus. It's a great little event and visitors are welcomed for this or a short tour. So, if you'd like to see some good work in action, go to a graduation ceremony, held the second and fourth Saturday of every month. It will really open up your eyes to what these little dogs can do.

When I contacted Jake I was really not expecting the extent of service he provided. We had both…read moresquirrels in our walls AND a skunk under our shed. I loved that his goal was exclusion and not to kill, ESPECIALLY since that would help prevent the intrusion of any future critters under our house or shed. Jake was SO thorough. Our particular "story" (as he calls them) was pretty complicated. We had entry points in our roof, under the front deck of our house, tunnels in our yard, & around our shed we had no clue about. We made sure to continually share as much information with him about the location of the sounds we were hearing and what we knew about the layout of our crawl spaces (yes, multiple). When it came up that we had french drains around the property (because our house is on a slope) he got the idea to look at the exit points of those drains and found ANOTHER entry point for critters! Jake came back time and again, checking for more entry points, filling them with rock and cement or foam (depending on the location--and all for the same initial quote). He put flashing over the hole in the corner of the roof and for the first time in YEARS we don't have the smell of smoke wafting out from under our shed! And Jake was not the first person who had tried to extract the culprit! Do yourself a favor and call this guy. Your wallet and home will thank you!

Their website has numerous references to assistance for low-income seniors (I'm 69) re: case mgmnt services, referrals and or "assistance" w finding housing, access to food ( when I inquired about receiving food I was given a sm plastic bag containing 3 cans of food; one of green beans, 1 can red kidney beans and a can of peas). When I call and or talk to staff members who say they work with seniors, I am always told that they are not really offering services to seniors right now except rhe occasional onsite elder LGTPQ+ parties (that staff also attend) and, zoom literary presentations (which are quite good but are these the extensive senior services that the website is referring to?) Plus I once brought in some of my nicer clothes, ( that no longer fit) freshly laundered and or dry cleaned to donate. Maybe 12 items, colorful and in excellent condition. The staff member who accepted them did not offer any appreciation or gesture of gratitude but held up each closely scrutinizing each one, in front of another staff person ( I don't know if the woman who did this is there any longer? I didn't catch her name ..?) They do have a nice fitness area, and classes ( I've always had to pay extra for) except for a brief art therapy session / wkshop which was wonderful! Also they have food donated ( which the staff also take) including sourdough bread and potted herbs from Trader Joe's. I think the place has a sound vision and philosophy as stated on their website. But it's not quite like this in reality. Plus the website says everything is offered free of charge. This is not true. They would not let me touch a computer or anything else for that matter, until I paid for a membership. I DO qualify for one that is subsidized so I appreciate that! Though now I am a bit afraid to visit very often because one of the last times I visited the front desk person and a houseless person seemed to be having an argument. The houseless person got violent and began swinging a large bat type thing. It was frightening to witness tho I've been in a few times since then. Also one more BIG thing to mention; the director replaced all of my keys that were lost there, paying for all of them! I will be forever indebted for her kindness!! And last but not least; Damien at the front desk is one of the kindest people I have ever met! Always, thoughtful, always gentle and ALWAYS friendly!

Lots of good things going on here for all ages, from kids to elderly folks. I met with Anna Walker,…read morewho provides support services for elders, and she was kind, efficient, and went above and beyond to assist me. My grandson and I plan to participate in many of the activities here!
